17- Charlene; The New Situation

One of those days, Charlene was preparing for her next project. But suddenly she had someone looking for her.

‘Hmm…’ Charlene looked at the familiar figure.

“Charlene, have you heard about the decration that the Federation has published?” it was Raymond who asked this.

“I have heard of it. From what I know, it is both a decration against the Snatcher as well as the creation of the world-destroying weapon. What of it?” Charlene inquired.

“The issue is that the creation of the world-destroying weapon has become the main issue across the continent. Everyone has heard them and the rest of the powers of the continent are still discussing it.” Raymond said it with a shrug of his shoulder, his expression was one of pondering.

“I see. You are concerned about the superpowers' reaction. We can only wait and see for that.” Charlene said as she took a sheet of paper from her desk and looked at it for some time before she pced it back.

“Other than that…” Raymond wanted to say more but Charlene as if reading his mind said it first.

“Do you want to say that President Tesna is looking for me?”

“Yes. That is exactly why I am here.” Raymond wore a resigned expression as he did not expect that Charlene could even guess that.

“I will be at the President’s Room shortly.”

  -

“So what is the occasion?” Charlene did not beat around the bush and directly asked.

“It is about the response from various powers in the Comberth Continent. Do you know how they respond to our decration?” Tesna raised his brow as he looked at Charlene.

“That it is just a boasting attitude? A hyperbole and an attempt to bluff the others into thinking that we have the power to destroy the world?” Charlene listed one by one her thoughts about the matter.

Tesna coughed hard at the unexpected reply. The reply that Charlene had said was exactly the attitude from the rest of the powers of the continent.

“How should we convince them?” Charlene asked this because she knew that the worst possible scenario had to happen.

It meant that the Hinon Federation had to showcase the might of the atomic bomb. But the issue came as they first had to designate something as their target. So far they did not find a suitable target for intimidation purpose.

“We should find some pces we can strike against without the rest of the continent being offended by our action. And we also need the just cause for it too. Fortunately, we have one. A strong justification to attack a powerhouse. The problem is that the opposing powerhouse is actually on another continent altogether.” Tesna sighed before he carefully looked at Charlene.

“What gives us the justification to attack the Heavensend Kingdom?” Charlene knew that the only one on the other continent was the Heavensend Kingdom so she asked what connection they had with the Federation.

“The Snatcher…is founded by them.” The moment Tesna said this, Charlene’s eyes focused entirely on him. Her gre was as if a veteran soldier was present.

“What does that mean, then?” Charlene asked in a low tone.

“It means that we are being pyed like a damn fiddle by them. So sending them some atomic bomb is a good enough retaliation, right?” Tesna said with gritted teeth.

“So what caused them to act like that? Have you figured everything out?” Charlene wanted to make sure that the information Tesna had received was correct and factual.

“It is actually the sleeping cells of the Chi family. As you know, the family is the royalty of the Heavensend Kingdom so it is highly probable that the Heavensend Kingdom itself backs their action.”

What a joke, the entire terrorist organization was backed by an entire government. And even more so that they had offended the Hinon Federation, crossing its bottom line.

Now, the Hinon Federation had a chance to enact their revenge while showing the rest of the Comberth Continent the power of the atomic bomb. But first, they needed to pn things out before acting.

“The Strategic Intelligent Division obtains this information. Even the representatives of our Federation are angry at the revetion. We too are angry at this…” Tesna added before he let out a sigh.

Of course Charlene knew the ‘we’ that Tesna had talked about. It was normal that the Father God Congregation would be angered by this.

“So this is all true.” Charlene could only brace herself as her creation would be used against such people.

“Fortunately, we are stable enough to do this. The Hinon Federation will be moving soon.” Tesna looked at Charlene before he went silent.

“I have a request,” Charlene said.

“Speak.” Tesna nodded, he had expected somehow that Charlene would see for herself what kind of weapon she had created but seeing the glint in her eyes made Tesna aware of the seriousness in her tone.

“I want to be able to witness the deployment of my weapon. This is all I want to do.” Charlene stated in an unyielding tone as if this was the thing she must do at all cost.

“Are you sure about this? I warn you that witnessing things firsthand is different than seeing it through television and newspapers.” Tesna warned but Charlene who had resolved herself to this did not budge an inch.

  She nodded firmly.

Tesna let out another sigh as he went beside Charlene, patting her shoulder.

“Well, let me take care of the paperwork. You just have to be the representatives of the Hinon Science Institute in the Army.”

“Thank you, Sir.” Charlene said softly. Tesna who heard it only waved his hand, gesturing for her to get out from the room.

She left the room with the realization that she had to witness the monumental event.

  -

  A month ter.

Charlene was transferred to the Army as per her request. Tesna had handled the paperwork so the military higher-ups permitted it.

Furthermore, the Offensive Campaign No.10 would begin soon. That was the name of the operation that the Hinon Federation would do against the Heavensend Kingdom.

In this campaign, they would also let out one of their trump card that would be useful in naval battle. Other than creating destroyers and cruiser ships, the Federation had also created a mobile aircraft carrier which could store twenty multipurpose aircraft.

They did this because of the intelligence that they had received. From it, they knew that Heavensend Kingdom did not have an effective anti-air capabilities. Therefore, a strike from an aircraft carrier seemed to be one of the solutions to this.

The aircraft carrier would also become the fgship of the fleet so Charlene was sent to it.

The very first challenge of the campaign was ensuring the nearby sea area was occupied by the Federation ships. The problem was that the Heavensend Kingdom had a battleship that could rival the power of several ships in their forces.

Sinking that battleship became the primary objective of the Federation Navy. Furthermore, they would also coordinate with the Federation Army to mount a nding on the Heavensend Continent.

So the Offensive Campaign No. 10 was done twofold, securing the sea perimeter from the Heavensend Kingdom’s navy and mounting a nding to attack the nd of the Heavensend Kingdom.

But there was a third pn which was to use the atomic bomb on two of the cities of the Heavensend Kingdom.

Of course, Charlene and the military higher-ups knew of this but the rest of the soldiers and sailors did not know that, making it a confidential mission.

Now the forces from Hinon Federation were sailing through the ocean to the Heavensend Kingdom. They were en route to the nd in the southeast of the Heavensend Continent before they were intercepted by the Heavensend Kingdom’s navy.

Of course, their rge movements were noticed immediately by the Heavensend Kingdom so they were pnning to stop them from reaching the Heavensend Continent.

On the bridge of the SS Bruce, Charlene could see the entirety of the carrier. It was named Bruce because the captain of the ship was named Bruce, that simple.

Several sailors and pilots were scurrying around the deck of the ship. The pilots went to their designated aircraft while the sailors were helping with the process of taking off the aircraft from the wide deck.

The aircraft carrier’s deck was ft wide so that the carrier could accommodate a rge number of aircraft.

Bruce was communicating with the crew on the radio. Charlene could hear that it was about the attack against the battleship from the Heavensend Kingdom’s navy. It was because the battleship was spotted among the navy forces of the opponent.

“This is a good opportunity to sink that symbol of the Invincible Armada. Let us see how tough the battleship truly is in front of the relentless attack from the aircraft!” Bruce ended the radio communication as he said that.

The escorting ships which included destroyers and cruisers were ready in their position. This time, the attack would be led by the aircraft carrier’s aircraft strike.

Then the first aircraft was taking off from the carrier, followed by the second, third, and fourth. Later they converged to form a formation as they headed toward the fleets opposite them.

The aircraft pilot found out that the Heavensend Kingdom’s navy did not have a good anti-air weapon as they could only shoot with their rifles. Seeing this, the pilots did not hesitate to fly over the battleship and released their bombs away.

An explosion occurred at that instant followed by another one. Two of the four bombs that the aircraft had dropped hit the battleship in its hulls. The bomb was also hitting some of the compartment and the deck shook greatly, making the sailors lose their bance and fell.

The worst of it all was that it was the first wave followed by the second, third, fourth and fifth. It was as if the entire aircraft were targeting their battleship.

Other than bombing their battleship, the aircraft above were strafing with their front gun to the deck, aiming to inflict more casualties and damage to the ship.

The Heavensend Kingdom could not do anything much to the aircraft above as they did not have good anti-air capabilities.

However, the commander of the Heavensend Kingdom’s navy was not willing to go down without achieving anything. Therefore he ordered the rest of the ships to charge towards the aircraft carrier which was the cause of their problem.

So close combat was inevitable as the fleet of both sides was engaged in fierce combat. But sadly due to the Hinon Federation’s fleet achieving air supremacy, they had a great advantage in the battle. And that advantage was widening with each wave the aircraft carrier unched the aircraft.

Furthermore, the Hinon Federation’s fleet was moving in a way that caused the aircraft carrier to be protected from the battleship’s cannon fire line, preventing it from sinking the carrier.

The longer the battle went, the more disadvantage the Heavensend Kingdom’s Navy found themselves in.

Then news came from the radio that one of the ships was sunk by the aircraft.

This aircraft initially wanted to target the battleship but found out that the battleship was damaged and he also received an order to change target so the pilot changed his target to the escort ships.

Then the pilot discovered that the ship he had bombed had sunk right away. It looked like the bomb was hitting right above the engine room causing a secondary explosion.

Seeing this, the target of the aircraft changed since the battleship was heavily damaged. The aircraft had managed to sink another ship and the casualties increased.

The Commander then let out an unwilling sigh as he smashed his hand to the armchair of the captain’s chair as he ordered the fleet to retreat through the radio.

Slowly but surely, the Heavensend Kingdom’s fleet went away from the current battlefield. They had left the sunken ship without even helping their floating sailors.

With that, the Hinon Federation’s Fleet could go to the Heavensend Kingdom.

There were some heavily damaged destroyer ships and some minor damaged cruisers. But fortunately, the carrier was not damaged in the slightest. The aircraft carrier ordered the aircraft above not to pursue the retreating fleet from the Heavensend Kingdom.

But there was also a sunk vessel from the Hinon Federation’s navy. The sailors who survived were helped by the other ships. As for the damaged ships, they had no choice but to wait until they arrived at the Heavensend Continent for repair.

As for the opponent ships, they managed to sink five but the battleship was still operating despite the heavy damage it sustained.

After the battle was over and the fleets were separated, the giant sea beasts started to gather at the location.

On the bridge of the SS Bruce, Charlene who had watched the entire battle unfold could not say anything.

It was because this aircraft carrier managed to sink three of the five ships even though the battleship managed to escape from their clutches.

“Why did the pilots not focus their attack on the battleship?” Charlene had found this matter quite strange. Just a bit more waves from the aircraft strike and the battleship would be sunk.

Bruce, the captain of the aircraft carrier held a cigarette as he lit it up. He said, “Apparently there is someone from our side on that ship doing the undercover. That is all I know. If not for that, the Invincible Armada would lose their greatest source of confidence.”

Then he puffed up a cloud of grey smoke before he sighed.

“An undercover agent from the Federation, huh.” Charlene could only let it go since there was something the military higher-ups wanted to do.

As the Federation fleets advanced, they also led the ones behind them. Behind the fleet were numerous ships carrying the soldiers to nd in the Heavensend Kingdom. After the fleet had secured the sea nearby, these ships started to move along with the vanguard fleet.

They moved away from the smoke of the sea battle that had just taken pce.

  -

The battle at the sea did not go unnoticed as several smaller ships were sighted near the location of the battle.

Those people were the ones who sought more information regarding the movement of the Hinon Federation as well as the reporters.

Upon finding that the two superpowers had a csh was enough for them to be reported back. In fact, they started writing the report as soon as the battle between the two fleets ended.

This news then started to spread across the entire Comberth Continent. As for the Heavensend Kingdom, the news of their navy’s defeat was restricted to be spread among the popuce.

This caused a shock to the powers of the continent as they did not expect the Hinon Federation to have a card like an aircraft carrier.

This caused several other powers of the continent to have ideas against the Heavensend Kingdom. Add to the fact that the one who was behind the Snatcher was the Heavensend Kingdom caused them to at least unite in the superficial yer.

Then there was the reaction from their citizens. Their reaction was strangely more reserved. They only felt that the battle was necessary for the stability of the situation.

And then there was one more person that was tied to this. The Federation agent that was on the Heavensend Kingdom’s battleship.

As the one who carried an important mission, he infiltrated the Heavensend Kingdom’s upper echelon and ended up on the battleship at the day when the Federation had unched an offensive.

He could be considered both lucky and unlucky.

He was lucky because he informed the Federation’s higher-up about his position and felt unlucky because one of the bombs that the aircraft had dropped exploded near his position.

It caused him significant obstacles to reach some of the objectives he had set to achieve.

But finally he managed to get the necessary information regarding the Snatcher.

  -

On the other hand, at the Heavensend Kingdom’s capital.

Several officers ran back and forth due to receiving news from the Navy. And it was a bad news.

“How is it?” Chi Sen was the king of the kingdom and he was already old in his sixties but that did not lower his voice as he asked. His loud voice echoed throughout the Inner Pace.

“Your Majesty, the Navy suffered losses at the hand of the Hinon Federation from the Comberth Continent.” One of the officers responsible for receiving the news said in a solemn tone.

He continued, “It was because of the one ship the opponents called ‘aircraft carrier’ that we have no counter with which caused our losses.”

Chi Sen who heard that squinted his eyes. He could not believe that even the Invincible Armada that the Heavensend Kingdom had at its disposal would lose to such a ship.

“It only serves to expose the weakness of our forces. We can only confront them when they nd. Send the troops to the border of the nd to scout and report back regarding the Hinon Federation forces!” Chi Sen said in an authoritative tone.

“Yes, Your Majesty! Your command will be fulfilled!” the officer saluted before he left the Inner Pace where the court was.
