- You can tell. - He observed, and I could sense a certain admiration in his words. - But I can't help asking, Miss Satouma, can I? What are your intentions?
His words took me by surprise. I was trying to be discreet, but he was no fool.
- Intentions? - I repeated, my mind trying to process the question.
- Don't get me wrong. I'm good at spotting when I'm about to negotiate. I mean, at least one of my eyes is sharp enough for that. And I know you didn't bring me here just to ask questions, as was discussed earlier.
He was very perceptive. In fact, I had other intentions with him, but I thought a more casual conversation might serve to break the ice. Normally, I would do the same in a meeting with business partners.
Before entering into a serious negotiation, it's best to smooth things over with a more subtle approach. But right away, he spotted my game.
- You really do have a good eye for business. - I replied with a smile, respecting his perception. - Yes, in a way, I want to use it, but not in the sense of extortion. It's more a question of orientation. And, compliments aside, you seem to be the ideal person for a conversation like this... or rather, the dwarf.
- As I told you, I like to talk. - He ughed softly, his eyes twinkling with a hint of amusement. - But, if I may be so bold, I'd also like to ask you a few questions. Since we're ying our cards on the table, I'm the curious type, you know?
- That's for sure. I'll answer whatever I can. What would you like to know? - I asked, gesturing to make him feel at ease.
He looked briefly out of the window, and I followed his gaze, wondering if there was something going on outside. But when I took a closer look, I realized that there was nothing out of the ordinary. Just a few orcs moving around, working, and some ants carrying small leaves.
- Orcs and rock ants... what an interesting combination. How did that happen? - He asked, clearly puzzled.
- Oh, it's a... - I began, but he interrupted me, already guessing the answer.
- Let me guess. Long story? - He smiled, in a way that almost made me ugh.
- But what matters is that, in the end, the outcome was good. - I said, allowing myself a moment of lightness.
- So allow me to change my question... what's next? - He tilted his head, as if he already knew that I wasn't telling him everything.
- What's next? - I repeated, not fully understanding the depth of the question.
- Unlike humans, dwarves and even elves, few species have the ability to live in such a mixed society. A hunter species could never live in peace alongside a predator. So I ask myself... is this the start of something new?
The word “new” hung in the air. He was talking about something much broader, about the possibility of different species coexisting, interacting and even living together. The idea sounded surreal, but at the same time, something inside me knew he was right.
It was an interesting point. However, I still didn't have an opinion on it. After all, I didn't belong to that world. But it could be an interesting topic to discuss.
- Who knows? To be honest, I was a bit lost in my goals. All I wanted was just to live in peace, but things went wrong and that's how they ended up. But I must admit, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. - I said, with a lightness that didn't exactly match the whirlwind of thoughts going through my mind.
At the end of the day, we're not so different from each other. We're all monsters in some way, so there's no reason for so many conflicts, for so much animosity. The truth is, as much as we tried to hide behind our own barriers, we all had something that united us. The essence of our existence.
- But about this being the start of something new... you may be right, Lord Starko'gus. But I'd say it's more like something... surreal. - I added, trying to strike a lighter tone, even though the situation was, in fact, untenable.
I took the opportunity to give a brief context of the situation we were in.
“Surreal” was the word that best defined it. To put it bluntly, we were trying to form a society, a society for monsters. How bizarre did that sound? I didn't quite know what to think, but that's exactly what we were trying to do.
And even though I was trying to be rational, the fact that it was a society between beings like us... left a lump in my throat.
I didn't have much experience in this, but my pns were simple, albeit ambitious: to teach the orcs the basics of survival. How to farm, simple knowledge of ingenuity, even the basics of how to make a home and produce trivial resources like clothes and other necessities.
But honestly, I wasn't the most qualified person for this. I wasn't ideal for passing on concepts that my former species had developed over the course of evolution.
It wasn't easy. I didn't know if I was ready, and the challenge seemed much greater than I could have imagined. Teaching something that even I hadn't completely mastered. How to make a house, how to plow a field, how to make clothes... I would have to show in practice, by trial and error, what I knew about the human world.
To do this, I would need help, help from someone with more knowledge, someone from the outside. But how could I do that? A species advanced in knowledge would never be willing to help a cause like mine.
- Well, you were right... it really does border on the absurd. - Starko'gus said, seeming to reflect on everything I had said.
- But you did a lot of thinking while I was talking, do you have anything to share? - I asked, curious about what he had in mind.
He wasn't just a good listener, or at least he didn't seem to be. He was processing everything I said and that gave me the feeling that perhaps he was more interested in understanding the depth of the situation than simply ridiculing the absurdity of it all.
- Building a society from scratch is absurd, but as a dwarf, I wouldn't say it's impossible. Our species is proof of that. Despite being considered inferior to humans, we've proved otherwise by living on our own and building our own homes. - Starko'gus said with an assurance that made me reflect on everything that was happening.
