Chapter 3 - The Military Base

The Lost Vampire System Chapter 3 - The Military Base

The next thing Jareth could feel was a splash of cold water on his face. Jareth’s eyes jerked open immediately and he could see grass and a shadow cast on him from a tree. He could see that Robert was staring at him while holding a bucket.

“I guess the gas affected you like everybody else, after all,” Robert said with a blank expression. He turned and walked away.

Before Jareth could think of anything, a new Draven system message popped up.

“Daily quest complete: you have successfully stayed out of the sun. 5 exp has been granted. Quest complete: reach the military base with no problems. 5 exp granted. 10 of 25 exp. It is a new day; your daily quests have been reset. 1. Stay out of sunlight for 10 hours. 2. drink 1 gallon of water a day. Error: Project System not found. Be advised, locate Project System to gain its true potential.”

Project System, Jareth thought in a daze as he looked at his sister who was next to him along with several other students started to lift their heads to look around them. There was currently a total of 500 students standing out on a plain open field with a single tree but when they looked around, they were in a place that was completely foreign to them.

“This is where you will spend the next three years of your life.” Robert yelled. “At least this is where you will start the next three years.”

The students were amazed at what they were seeing. They were currently in a city like they had never seen before. Everyone was dressed up in leaf like military uniforms and there were technology and engineering around them that was too advanced for their time. Giant robots moving crates and building machines. There were flying ships, and levitating trains. It was a technology that hadn’t been given to the outside world yet and was kept for the military only.

After the first war with the Lyracken Race, the humans had managed to make leaps in technological advancement. This was because they had managed to salvage equipment from them after the war, but of course, the military decided to keep most of it for themselves only sharing it with the Kennedy Faction. There was a smart scientist that came forward as well.

When Jareth finally stopped being amazed at his surroundings, he noticed that there was something placed around his left wrist and up halfway up his forearm. It looked similar to a digital watch that went up his forearm but there was nothing displaying on the rectangle screen.

  BANG!

A large banging sound echoed in the area as an individual flew over their heads. Students yelled in fright as another person flew above them smashing into the individual on the ground.

“Get off of me!” the first boy yelled as Lazers shot out of his eyes.

The Lazers did nothing to the second boy as he let go lifting his leg up. The other boy moved to the side as he slammed his foot down cracking the very earth itself. The dodger uppercut the kid sending him into the air. He caught himself as his fist morphed into the size of a huge boulder.

“What the heck is happening?” Mia asked frantically as she gripped onto her brother’s arm in fear.

  “I think it’s a dispute,” Jareth replied.

“You dare call my mother a wh*re!” The big fist student yelled flying towards the ground. The other student began to get into a defensing position, but just then a military personnel member appeared. Plants erupted from the ground swatting the student out of the sky. He slammed into the ground causing a small crater. He tried to get up, but that's when plants sprang from the ground around him, wrapping around his body and tying him down.

“Cease hostility!” the military man roared. You will be greatly punished for this transgression! You will also be required to go to anger management classes!”

The student who was tied down tried to break free but the military man lifted his hand into the air and lightning came out of his finger tips electrifying the student.

“Cease hostility NOW!” The military man roared even louder again, which was louder than any normal person could yell. “Your punishment will be tripled for that.”

He turned his head to look at the other student. “You will receive no punishment for self-defense.” He grabbed hold of the student and all three of them vanished.

There was silence before a student from the crowd shouted.

“That military man had at least four Evolved powers! That in itself is rare!”

“He was also strong with those four powers!” Another student yelled.

After that, chattering started across the crowd of new students.

“Quiet!” Robert yelled and the students fell silent. “The person you just looked at was a two-star Major General, Charlie. He is not at this military base so let’s just say that the fight had been going on for a while. I know that might have been expected so let’s move on.” Robert cleared his throat then began. “You probably noticed something on your forearm, that there is your lifeline. It will identify you as a student of this military campus. You will be able to access certain areas, pay for food and even allow you access to the boxes.”

Some people got really excited to hear that. Getting access to the gaming boxes was only for people who had money.

Robert couldn’t tell if the students were actually excited for the gaming boxes or was still thinking about the fight that had happened. It doesn’t matter, he thought.

“The Forwatch, that is what it is called, it is your lifeline. That is something you must remember. It gives us access to your vital signs to make sure that you are ok. The forwatch will show more than just your vitals. It will display the number of abilities you have plus the level of each ability and your total power level.” Robert finished his speech.

Jareth squeezed his hand in anger. When he thought his life would change, it now seemed like it would be the same. The only difference was that it would display what you are.

“With the information I provided to you,” Robert said. The test of your potential will begin.”

When the Evolved introduced powers to the human race they soon realized that some powers were more powerful than others. It was a little obvious. That was when the humans introduced the power system. It judged based on the number of Evolved powers you have, the amount of power per ability, and the total power that you had. At least what the public new about.

There were mainly 3 ways to get an Evolved power. One was that the powers were shared from the Evolved when the war against the Lyrackens started. They wrote them down and created the Evolved books that had a strange power attached to it called Evolved Books.

These were sold to the public and of course the more powerful ones were kept to themselves. Evolved book level 1-5 were sold to the public with few selling at 6 or 7. While this was happening big companies, and the military kept most of the levels 6 to 10 to themselves.

The second option was to be a in one of the Evolved bloodlines. There were some of the Evolved that fought in the war but had chosen to only teach the abilities within their family. Most of the originals power level goes beyond level 10, but the reason why they don’t rate any higher is because they don’t have enough information to judge it, because it was something that wasn’t public knowledge.

The third option was that you had no Evolved power, and someone thought that you were worthy to teach you the ability that they possessed. The relationship worked where in exchange for them to teach you their ability, you would work for them. Since Jareth and Mia were from a no name family, no one thought them as worthy.

These were the reasons why Jareth and his sister Mia were classified as 0:1. Zero abilities and only a power of 1.

When Jareth obtained the computer, he didn’t think much of it but now it may have been something far greater than anything he could ever have hoped for. He still wasn’t sure about what power it gave him. He was a little nervous about it, since it said it contacted its creator, but he couldn’t do anything about it. Jareth was also a little confused about the last part of the message before that. Something about absorbing Project System. He didn’t know what it meant, but based on the fact that his family was still in the possession of the laptop, showed that it couldn’t track him, at least not very well. He would have to put it at the back of his mind.

He looked at his forwatch and it displayed his vitals along with the words, Abilities; 0, Power; 1. He looked at his sister’s watch which was saying the same thing. He looked around and noticed that everyone else’s forwatch said the same thing. I guess they will test us before they get updated, Jareth thought.

Jareth was currently standing underneath a tree that was in the back of the group of students. Robert was standing at the front calling groups of 5 at a time. They then will be transported through a teleportation device located out in the field. That’s when he heard the last name that Robert called was Mia Nightshade. Mia turned to look at Jareth with a nervous expression on her face.

  “You’ll be fine, Jareth said.

She smiled nervously and walked to the front of the group getting with the other four group of people that were called up.

“Move forward!” Another military member shouted from behind.

This forced Jareth to step out from under the tree. As soon as he did, he got a Draven System message.

“You are in direct sunlight. Why are you standing in the sun again, you know it hurts. All stats will be reduced by 25% while the sunlight touches your skin.”

Jareth felt weak once again and was starting to somewhat sweat. He was leaning over and just wanted to sit down but he didn’t want to look weak.

“You, ok?” A man asked coming over. “You look like you might throw up. Do you want me to call for help?”

“No, I’m fine,” Jareth replied. “I’m just a little bit nervous about the testing,” Jareth said as he tried to ignore his tired body and stand up straight.

“That fight was something man, right?” the man said still looking at Jareth. “Even I wouldn’t be able to beat them.”

Jareth looked up and noticed the man. He was a handsome man with jet black hair and a sharp jawline. He was 6-foot 1 inch tall while Jareth was 5, 10. This is the type of person Jareth would avoid because people that had confidence usually were strong. He was smiling at him like he sees this every day.

Unlike the man, Jareth was quite skinny for his age and didn’t have a lot of muscle on him and right now he looked incredibly weak. The man thought that Jareth looked like the type of kid that would’ve got bullied in school and it was the reason why Jareth was nervous.

If Jareth was to get classified as having a power level of one, even with an ability, it would most likely result in another round of bullying.

“Well don’t be nervous,” the man said, “I’m really strong you know. You should stay with me. If you are in trouble, you come and ask me for help. We can watch each other’s backs.”

Jareth didn’t say anything, but he wasn’t quick to trust someone. Not after the multiple fake friends he had in school that just turned out to be a new bully for him. Even with that in mind Jareth had a hard time disliking the man. Back in school Jareth never got on well with anyone and it was the same with his sister.

“My name is Damion,” the man said reaching his hand out for a handshake. “Damion Youngblood.”

Jareth had reached out his hand. “I’m Jareth Nightshade,” he said then shook Damion’s hand. That’s when a DS message appeared.

“An Evolved power is trying to be used on you. Evolved power has been blocked.”

When the DS messages appeared, Jareth looked at it confused. It seems like Damion is trying to use an ability on him. That’s when he noticed that Damion hadn’t let go of his hand. A confused expression appeared on Damion’s face but then his face went back to being normal again.

“A mysterious energy has been detected. Energy has been blocked. Identifying energy. Energy Identified: Hybrid Nephilim energy detected. You do not meet the requirements to absorb this energy.”

Jareth immediately pulled his hand away and looked at Damion with anger wondering what he had just attempted to do. The DS was telling him that Damion was trying to use his powers, as well as some hybrid Nephilim energy, on him. He barely knew what it was, but a Nephilim was a child of an angel and human. Was the system saying that he was part angel. No, Jareth thought. It is mistaken.

“What are you playing at?” Jareth asked annoyed.

“I mean no harm,” Damion said. “My Evolved power is a strange one. What is your Evolved power?”

Jareth stared at Damion and wondered what he should say. He could tell him about the system ability, but yet he himself doesn’t even know about the true capabilities of the system. And unlike some people, Jareth was not part of any powerful family or corporation that could protect him if this was to get out and someone wanted to get their hands on it. He was still a little worried about the Nephilim part, but he also wanted to see the way Damion would act. So, he decided to tell Damion what he thinks he would believe more.

“I don’t have an ability,” Jareth said nervously.

Damion had a frown on his face but like it didn’t matter to him he smiled again.

“That’s ok,” he said. “I’ll still be your friend.”

“Why would you do that?” Jareth asked with curiosity.

“Why should I not be friends with someone who is weak?” Damion asked with anger on his face. “Why should I only be friends with someone who is at the same power as me? It’s not fare that this corrupt system only likes the powerful and leaves out the weak. If it were up to me, I would change that.” After he finished, he hit his chest once.

“What Damion had said had put a smile on his face. He was someone who believed the same thing as him. Someone who wanted to truly make the world a better place.

“I agree with you Damion,” Jareth said as he positioned himself next to Damion on his right while still slightly slumped over.

I like Jareth, Damion thought. He isn’t like the other kids who go with this corrupt system, he wants to change the world. That’s what will make him a good friend. My concern is that my copy ability didn’t work on him. He said it was because he had no ability so that would make sense. I would’ve believed him if it wasn’t for the fact that my energy had been blocked as well, by something that was in him. He will be interesting, and I should keep an eye on him. Who knows maybe it’s nothing and we will be great friends, as long as he doesn’t pose a threat to my Great-Grandma, Marguerite Delacroix.
