Chapter 1 - The Beginning

I let out a sigh in dissapointment as I consider the dull and dreary day I have to come. 'Why I thought working as a common grunt at a supermarket would be better than just getting a paper round, I may never know. It was probably the work hours. I hate early mornings with a passion - I am not a morning person, that's for sure. At least working here I get to sleep in 'till 9 on Sundays and only work afternoons on Saturdays.'

I've just started my Sunday morning shift, and I am already bored out of my mind and horrified at my future. 'It's my turn on the rota to try and clean out the toilets - or the shithole they call toilets, as I've begin to suspect that it's a farm for producing rat meat. The place reeks to the point of causing involuntary gagging, and it would probably be a microbiologists field trip. That or a biochemical weapon specialists' field trip - I haven't quite decided which yet.' Before I continue that train of thought, my only friend here - John - jolts me out of my reverie.

"Hey man - your duty today is it?"

"Hey John - And yes, yes it is...' I let out a dissapointed sigh. 'Why don't they just get some industrial grade hydrofluoric acid or something and spray down the walls with that - It would both make it a health and safety hazard for us, so we wouldn't be able to go in there, kill most living things in there, and also destroy half the toilets, probably. Job done! Hell, we don't even get proper cleaners for that shithole, just this shop's shitty 'own brand' one..."

"I feel your pain man - I had that duty last time, remember? And let me tall ya, it ain't gotten any better than it was last time..."

"Well, I'd best be off. After all, don't want the manager to find me procrastinating again, do we?" I reply, chuckling.

  ''Course man, see you later!"

I once again begin pushing my cleaning trolley towards the depths of he- *ahem* the ' toilets'. The death march soon ends as I reach the side of the supermarket, and the toilets. The first stop being the mens. Grabbing a few cleaning essentials - antibacterial spray, a cloth, and a wheeled mop bucket, of course with mop included - I enter the room. I get to work, scrubbing the already wet (with what, I don't want to know) floor with the mop, and soon moving onto scrubbing down the taps and sinks. An occasional involuntary gag slips it's way in, as the room stinks of shit, even if the smell of antibacterial cleaner helps a bet. But other than that, work proceedes relatively smoothly. 'Well, as smoothly as cleaning the shittiest toilets on the planet can be.'

I finish up the sinks, and walk back to the mop bucket to replace the cloth and get the mop. Grabbing the mop, I walk towards the first of the row of cubicles, to clean the floor within. As I begin to open the door, the room suddenly lights up brightly - light streaming in through the small transluscent window which lies above one of the cubicles. Shocked, I trip forwards, landing on the mop shaft, snapping the shaft near the mop head. 'Ughhh, I'm going to have to pay for that now, aren't I' I sigh dissapointedly. 'Well, this day can't get much worse, can it? Wonder what caused that flash though' It was a curious thing. A random flash of very bright light through a outside-facing window - 'Hell, the light is still coming in', I realise as I once more clamber to my feet, still clutching the broken mop.

  *Ding!*

'The fuck... Is... This... Shit...? Am I finally going insane? Is it the fumes from these toilets and the cleaners? Eh, fuckit, I'll just go outside of here to check that it is just me...'

A wave of pain spreads from my chest, and I welcome darkness...

  *Thud*

always release at least 1 a week, probably on weekends. When I have time to write more, provided I don't write a ton, I will release an 'extra' chapter for every chapter I go above the pre-written quota. This gives me a failsafe for weeks when I have no time (like exams - although I'll probably get rid of the extra posts in the weeks before I need to get to work with revision and shit), and also a way to give you guys as many chapters as I have time to write. Hopefully that will work out!
