A horror story in which a vampire, known only as the master, sends his emissary, Mr. Barboux, to Salem Village in 1692, to forge an alliance with a local coven of witches. The Reverend Parris, fighting hard to keep his ecclesiastical office,sees the vampires as only a distraction and urges the townspeople to stay focused on the rising tide of witchcraft. Hetries his best to conceal the vampire menace, but in doing so, angers the sheriff and many of the villagers, who see thevampires as the real threat. Amid the backdrop of this story, many historically accurate elements of the period are included. Most of the characters are referred to by their actual names and what little is known of them, is often used in their character portrayals. Fictionalized excerpts from authentic witchcraft trial transcripts and real events of the time are weaved carefully into the plot. Local maps from the period were consulted to accurately represent roads and places geographically, so that someone could, if they wanted, retrace the steps of the sheriff in his travels. The climax of the story is the culmination of the alliance between Sheriff Corwin and Jim Pickman (the leader of the villagers) which finally results in an epic battle with the hordes of vampires, poised to take over the entire village.
