"Damn it! We're losing too many people!" Elise gritted her teeth, frustration and fear clear in her voice as she stared into the thick fog.
Lucas turned to Elise, one of the remaining rank A hunters with scanning abilities. "Can you sense where the enemies are?" he asked, his tone sharp with tension.
Elise closed her eyes and concentrated, her hands glowing with a faint blue light as she scanned the area. After a tense moment, her eyes snapped open, confusion and fear clear on her face.
"Nothing. I can't sense any monsters nearby!"
Emberlyn's brow furrowed. "How's that possible? Something's taking them right in front of us."
The circle of hunters tightened further, each member straining their senses to detect any approaching threat. The fog seemed to thicken around them, pressing in like a physical weight.
Lucy moved closer to Ethan, drawn to his calm presence amid the chaos. "Think it's an ambush?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Ethan gave a slight nod but didn't speak. His right hand gripped Razor Fang's handle tightly, while his left hand hovered near his belt, ready to draw another knife if needed.
Emberlyn, noticing Lucy's closeness to Ethan, felt that strange smoldering feeling again. She pushed it aside, focusing on the immediate danger.
"Everyone stay focused. We need to find the source of these attacks."
The forest seemed to close in around them, the fog growing thicker by the minute. The torchlight barely reached a few feet now, and shadows danced at the edge of their vision, playing tricks on their minds.
Lucas took a deep breath, steadying himself. "We need to flush them out. If we stay defensive, we'll just keep losing people."
"Agreed," Emberlyn said, taking charge. "But we need to be smart about it. Any careless moves could cost more lives." Her eyes surveyed the remaining hunters, assessing their abilities.
"Elise, keep scanning. Vance, get your barrier ready. Darek, see if you can create illusions to draw out whatever's attacking us. Lucy, be ready to clear this fog when I give the signal."
The hunters acknowledged her orders, each preparing for their role. Ethan remained silent, but his eyes were constantly moving, scanning the fog, the trees, the ground, looking for something the others might have missed.
SHOOSH!
The now-familiar sound cut through the air again, this time targeting Lucy. A dark, snake-like form lashed out from the fog, whipping toward her leg with terrifying speed.
Ethan reacted instantly. Without a word, he drew Razor Fang from his belt in a fluid motion and slashed through the attacking thing with perfect precision, causing it to recoil with a strange, creaking sound.
"What the hell was that?" Lucy gasped, pointing at the severed root writhing on the ground.
Ethan knelt, examining the writhing piece. His eyes widened slightly as realization dawned.
"It's the trees," he said quietly, then louder, "It's the trees! They're what's attacking us!"
The group looked at him in confusion, still trying to process what he was saying.
"The trees are our enemies!" Ethan repeated more urgently, rising to his feet as he readied his knife for another attack.
As if responding to his discovery, the forest seemed to come alive around them. A barrage of roots launched attacks from all directions, more aggressive than before.
The hunters deflected the incoming roots with their weapons, now aware of their true enemy.
"That's why I couldn't detect them with my tracer ability—they're part of nature!" Elise realized, her face going pale.
Lucas turned to Lucy, his expression urgent. "Lucy, you ready?"
Lucy nodded, her hands beginning to glow with power. "Yeah! Tempest Gale!" she shouted, channeling her wind magic to clear the thick fog around them.

The powerful gusts swept through the area, temporarily pushing back the fog and giving them a clearer view of their surroundings. Emberlyn and Lucas, positioned on one side of the circle, initially saw nothing but ordinary trees in their field of vision.
"What the hell is that thing?" Elise's voice cracked with shock as she stared at something beyond Emberlyn and Lucas's line of sight.
"What's going on?" Lucas asked, still keeping his eyes on his section.
"Emberlyn, you need to see this!"
Lucas and Emberlyn turned their heads and finally saw it, a massive tree towering at least 65 feet high, its bark a deep, almost black color. Unlike the other trees, this one's branches and roots moved with deliberate, sinister purpose.
The roots slithered across the ground like snakes, while the branches twisted and contorted like grasping hands.
"That's a Nightmarish Treant," Darek identified, his voice barely above a whisper.
The Nightmarish Treant stood ominously, its dark bark resembling the twisted faces of tortured souls. Hundreds of root-tentacles extended from its base, ready to grab anyone who came too close.
Most terrifying of all, partially embedded in its trunk were the forms of Kira, Jane, and Dren, their faces frozen in terror as the tree slowly absorbed them.
"ARRRRGHHHH!" The Treant let out a deep, echoing roar that shook the forest floor beneath their feet.
Emberlyn's sword burst into brilliant flame, the fire dancing along the blade as she prepared to strike. "Everyone, get back!" she commanded, pulling back her weapon.
Just as she was about to charge forward, Ethan's hand shot out, gripping her arm firmly. "Wait!" he warned, his normally quiet voice sharp with urgency.
"Why? Fire works great against trees!" Emberlyn replied, anger flashing in her eyes at being held back.
"Look," Ethan pointed toward the Treant's trunk. "Our teammates are trapped inside. If you attack with fire, you'll kill them too."
Emberlyn's eyes widened as she understood his meaning, her sword arm lowering slightly. "Damn it!" she muttered in frustration, the flames on her blade dimming but not extinguishing.
SHOOSH!
The Treant's roots lashed out with renewed fury, giving the team no time to strategize. They scattered, dodging the relentless attacks.
Lucy, still exhausted from casting her powerful wind spell, moved more slowly than the others, a root wrapped around her ankle, pulling her off balance.
"Ahh! Help me!" Lucy cried out, clawing at the ground as the root began to drag her toward the massive tree.
Once again, Ethan threw Phantom Blink, vanishing and reappearing beside Lucy in an instant. With Razor Fang, he severed the root holding her while using his free hand to help her up.
As more roots whipped toward them, Ethan's blade moved in a blur, cutting through each attack with surgical precision.
The other hunters watched in amazement as Ethan's knife work displayed a level of skill they had never imagined. Each cut was perfectly placed, each movement economical and devastatingly effective.
"Incredible," Darek murmured, his eyes following Ethan's fluid movements.
Ethan led Lucy safely behind Vance, whose shield was raised to provide cover. "Stay here," he instructed, his eyes already scanning for his next move.
"Thank you," Lucy whispered, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. Ethan nodded once before turning back to the battle.
From across the clearing, Emberlyn had watched the entire exchange. A strange feeling twisted in her chest as she saw Lucy's expression soften into something more than gratitude.
The emotion was irrational, unfamiliar, and distracting. She shook her head slightly, refocusing on the immediate threat, though her eyes kept finding their way back to Ethan.
"We need to save our teammates first!" Ethan announced, rejoining the main group.
"How?" Lucy asked, her voice still shaking slightly. "It's almost impossible to get close to that thing!"
Emberlyn, pushing aside her confusing emotions, took command once more. "We need to distract the Treant long enough to free our trapped teammates," she said decisively.
She turned to Elise. "Can you use your abilities to create a diversion?"
Elise nodded, determination replacing fear. "I can try to draw its attention."
Lucas, seeing a chance to show leadership, stepped forward. "We should split into two groups. One creates a diversion while the other focuses on rescue."
"Good plan," Ethan agreed, his quiet voice carrying conviction. "I'll be on the rescue team."
Emberlyn couldn't help the slight smile that tugged at her lips, appreciating Ethan's readiness to put himself in danger to help others. It was... admirable.
"Alright. Lucas, you lead the diversion team. Make as much noise and chaos as possible. Ethan, you're with me."
Lucas's jaw tightened visibly at being assigned to diversion rather than rescue, his eyes darkening as he glanced between Emberlyn and Ethan. "Fine," he said curtly.
"Vance, Darek, Elise, you're with me. Let's give them something to remember."
The teams quickly split up, Lucas leading his group to one side of the clearing while Emberlyn and Ethan prepared for their rescue attempt. Lucy, still recovering from her ordeal, remained with Lucas's team, but her eyes followed Ethan.
Marcus stayed with Emberlyn, ready to support the rescue mission.
"Ready?" Emberlyn whispered to Ethan, her eyes meeting his for perhaps the first time since their mission began.
Something passed between them in that moment, a connection, a shared purpose that went beyond her lost memories. For a heartbeat, Ethan saw a flicker of recognition in her gaze, and his heart soared.
"Let's do this," he replied simply, his quiet confidence strengthening her own.
