Chp 43 - Nightmarish Treant 2

"Let's do this," he replied simply, his quiet confidence strengthening her own.

At Lucas's signal, his team sprang into action. Elise created glowing arrows that flew around the Treant like fireflies, while Darek conjured phantom warriors that charged at the tree from multiple directions.

Vance raised his shield, which began to glow with protective magic, deflecting the roots that lashed out at them. Lucas attacked the lower roots with his sword, drawing the Treant's attention with shouts and taunts.

"Over here, you overgrown shrub!" Lucas yelled, his sword slashing through three roots at once.

"Is that all you've got?" Vance taunted, narrowly dodging a whipping root before blocking it with his shield.

Lucy, having recovered enough to help, cast small wind spells to deflect incoming roots and create confusion.

With the Treant thoroughly distracted, Emberlyn, Ethan, and Marcus made their move. They dashed across the clearing, using the shadows and chaos to conceal their approach.

Ethan gripped his knives tightly, ready to deal with any roots that came too close. Marcus's axe made short work of the thicker roots that blocked their path.

As they neared the Treant's massive trunk, Emberlyn found herself watching Ethan move with fluid grace through the dangerous terrain. He seemed to anticipate every root, every obstacle, as if he could see the battle three moves ahead.

Finally, they reached the trunk where Kira, Jane, and Dren were trapped. The Treant's bark had partially absorbed them, but their faces were still visible, eyes wide with terror.

"Hang on!" Ethan called to them. With precise, careful cuts, he began to work around their trapped forms.

With Razor Fang in hand, he began the delicate work of cutting around their trapped comrades. His blade moved with surgical precision, finding the exact spots where bark met flesh, never once risking harm to the people he was trying to save.

Emberlyn stood guard below, her flaming sword now burning at lower intensity, enough to ward off attacking roots without risking harm to their trapped comrades. "Hurry up, Ethan!" she urged, deflecting a root that had broken through their defenses.

Marcus formed a protective semicircle, defending against any roots that got past Emberlyn.

The bark was unnaturally tough, resisting his blade more than expected. Sweat beaded on Ethan's forehead as he put all his skill into the delicate cutting task, his movements never losing their fluid precision.

"Almost there," he murmured, more to himself than to the trapped hunters. One final cut, and Kira's form came loose from the trunk.

Ethan quickly caught her before she could fall, lowering her gently to Marcus's waiting arms. Jane followed moments later, then Dren, all three dazed but alive.

"Got them!" Ethan announced, visible relief in his eyes.

"Fall back!" Emberlyn ordered, her voice carrying to both their small group and Lucas's team across the clearing.

As soon as the word was given, the diversion team began to retreat in orderly fashion. Ethan and Marcus helped carry the rescued teammates while Emberlyn covered their retreat.

In its fury at losing its prey, the Treant unleashed a flurry of roots in all directions. Emberlyn, focused on helping a weakened teammate and watching for attacks from the front, didn't notice a massive root swinging toward her from behind.

Ethan, who had just handed his teammate off to Marcus, turned in time to see the danger. Without hesitation, he threw himself between Emberlyn and the attacking root, using his body as a shield.

The impact was tremendous, knocking the wind from his lungs and sending pain radiating through his body. Even as he absorbed the blow, he managed to slash the root with his knife before it could strike again.

The sound of the impact made Emberlyn turn sharply. Her eyes widened as she saw Ethan standing between her and the now-destroyed root, a strained smile on his face despite the obvious pain in his eyes.

"You okay, Ethan?" she asked, genuine concern in her voice as she stepped closer, supporting him by the arm.

"I'm fine," he replied, his voice tight but steady. "Let's get out of here!" He straightened, forcing a reassuring smile while hiding the throbbing pain that radiated from his back.

Emberlyn's gaze lingered on him a moment longer, a mixture of confusion and gratitude in her eyes. Something about his selfless act stirred a distant feeling within her, like déjà vu or a forgotten dream.

She nodded once, then turned to lead the retreating team away from the enraged Treant.

Ethan followed, keeping pace despite his injury. They had succeeded in rescuing their teammates, but as he looked back at the enraged Treant, he knew the battle was far from over.

Once they had retreated to a safe distance, the team regrouped in a small clearing. Everyone immediately began tending to the rescued teammates, checking for injuries and offering what comfort they could.

The others formed a protective perimeter, watching for any signs of pursuit.

"They'll need time to recover fully," Marcus said after examining them, "but they should be able to move soon."

Emberlyn nodded, then addressed the whole team. "We need to finish off the Treant without harming anyone else. Any ideas?"

Ethan, who had been standing quietly despite the pain in his back, stepped forward. "If we can stop it from moving, even for a short time, we might have a chance to attack its core directly."

Lucas, not to be outdone, added, "I've got some paralysis potions. If we can get close enough to pour them on its roots, it should slow it down."

"Both good ideas," Emberlyn acknowledged. "We'll combine them. Lucas, your team will apply the paralysis potions to as many roots as possible. Ethan and I will target the core once it's immobilized."

Her eyes swept over the group. "This ends now."

With renewed determination, the team prepared for their final assault on the Nightmarish Treant. Lucas distributed his paralysis potions while Ethan quietly checked each of his knives.

Emberlyn's sword blazed brighter as she focused her power, preparing to use her full strength.

As they readied for battle, the fog began to thicken again, rolling in from all directions. The Treant wasn't waiting for them to regroup, it was coming to them.

"Emberlyn, we need to get you to the core!" Ethan said urgently, his eyes meeting hers with unwavering conviction.

She nodded, understanding immediately. With her Pyroblade's power, she had the best chance of destroying the Treant's heart, but only if they could get her close enough.

The team rallied around Emberlyn, preparing to cut a path through the attacking roots. Lucas took point, his sword gleaming in the dim light as they moved back toward the Treant.

"Follow me! We break through now!" Lucas shouted, his voice carrying through the fog as he charged forward.

Through the thickening mist, they could see the massive shadow of the Treant, its roots writhing in anticipation. The team moved in tight formation, weapons ready.

Elise, using her tracer ability to its limits, tried to detect incoming roots despite their natural camouflage. "Left side! Watch out!" she called, directing the team's attention to a cluster of roots approaching from their flank.

Marcus covered the sides, his axe flashing as he cut down the attacking tendrils. "Keep moving! Don't stop!" Marcus roared, his axe a blur of motion as he severed three roots in a single sweep.

Lucy, determined to prove her worth after being rescued, summoned her wind magic again despite her exhaustion. "Tempest Gale!" she chanted, sending a powerful gust that pushed back the fog and revealed the path ahead.

  "Go, Emberlyn!"

Ethan stayed close to Emberlyn, Razor Fang in his right hand and Phantom Blink ready in his left. He slashed through any root that came too close with Razor Fang, while occasionally throwing Phantom Blink to teleport past clusters of roots that threatened to overwhelm them.

"Stay right behind me!" Ethan instructed Emberlyn, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.

Despite the pain in his back, his movements were fluid and precise. Years of training had given him incredible knife skills, which he now applied to combat with deadly effectiveness.

When needed, he would use short bursts of teleportation to reposition, creating a perfect balance of physical skill and tactical movement.

The team advanced steadily, fighting their way closer to the Treant's core. The massive tree seemed to sense their plan, its attacks growing more frantic with each step they took.

Roots lashed out from all sides, but the hunters fought with fierce determination.

"Almost there!" Ethan called out, drawing Phantom Blink and using it to teleport past a particularly dense cluster of roots, clearing the way forward.

A massive root shot toward Emberlyn, thicker than a man's torso and moving with frightening speed. Lucas intercepted it, grunting with effort as he held it back with his sword.

"Go, Emberlyn! Now!" he shouted, veins standing out on his neck as he strained against the enormous pressure.

Emberlyn nodded her thanks, her fiery sword blazing brighter as she prepared for her final assault. She launched herself forward with explosive speed, soaring through the air toward what they believed was the Treant's core.

But suddenly, the ancient creature revealed its true cunning.

The moment Emberlyn was airborne and committed to her attack, the "core" she was targeting began to shift and dissolve, it was nothing but an illusion of bark and shadow. The real trap came from directly below her: a massive root erupted from the ground beneath her feet with terrifying speed, twisting and coiling upward like a serpent.

Before she could react, the root formed a perfect cage around her, trapping her completely inside.

Emberlyn's eyes widened in shock as darkness consumed her. The cage was impenetrable, thick wooden bars that blocked out all light.

Even worse, she could feel her fire magic being suppressed. When she tried to summon her flames, nothing happened.

The air inside the cage felt wrong, suffocating, as if there was no oxygen to fuel her fire. Something about this prison actively prevented her powers from manifesting.

"I can't... I can't use my power!" she said, her voice steady despite the dire situation as she realized she was trapped and powerless in the suffocating darkness.

Emberlyn was trapped in complete darkness, pressing against the wooden bars with calculated movements. The suffocating air made it hard to breathe, and no matter how hard she tried, her flames wouldn't ignite.

As a Rank S hunter, she maintained her composure even in this dire situation.

"Help! Can anyone hear me?" she called out, her voice strong and clear as it echoed within the cramped prison. "I can't get out! I can't use my power!"

The darkness felt endless. She couldn't see anything, couldn't do anything.

But she remained focused, analyzing the situation even as she realized the severity of her predicament.

  Then suddenly—

  SLASH! SLASH! SLASH!

The cage exploded around her. Light flooded back, blinding her momentarily as wooden fragments scattered everywhere.

Her eyes snapped wide open in shock and amazement.

Flying knives, seven of them, were spinning and dancing through the air around her like living creatures. They moved with impossible grace and speed, cutting through the air with deadly precision.

Her mouth fell open in awe as she watched the deadly blades orbit around her in perfect formation, protecting her from the Treant's thrashing branches.

She had seen Ethan use his telekinetic abilities before, but only for simple tasks like cooking and organizing. Never had she witnessed this level of power and control.

The way he commanded seven weapons simultaneously in combat was beyond anything she had imagined possible. This wasn't just telekinesis, this was mastery at its finest.

Before she could process what had happened, Ethan materialized directly in front of her, having teleported to her position mid-air. His seven knives continued to orbit around them both like a deadly shield, moving so fast they created a protective barrier that made the air itself hum with danger.

The Treant's branches couldn't penetrate the whirling wall of steel.

"You alright?" Ethan asked, his voice filled with genuine concern as his eyes quickly examined her for injuries, checking her like a worried doctor.

Emberlyn stared at him in wonder, her heart racing not from the battle but from something else entirely. This man... why is he so concerned about me? she thought, feeling as though time had slowed around them.

There was something in his eyes, something protective and caring that made her chest tighten with an emotion she couldn't name. Without realizing it, her gaze softened with a look that spoke of deeper feelings beginning to bloom.

"The tree's hiding its real core!" Elise shouted from below, breaking the spell between them.

Emberlyn snapped back to reality, the moment shattered. She moved past Ethan, gripping her sword tightly as determination replaced the confused emotions in her heart.

She raised her sword high above her head, and suddenly flames erupted along the blade like a raging storm. With each heartbeat, the fire grew bigger and fiercer, spreading until the inferno surrounding her weapon towered over the massive Treant.

The heat was so brutal that the air itself began to waver and twist like water.

"You can hide your core anywhere you want," Emberlyn called out, her voice cutting through the chaos with the confidence of someone who'd earned her title as Eldervale's Number 1 Rank S Hunter. "but you will still die by my hand!"

She pulled back her flaming sword, power crackling around her.

  "Infernal Severance!"

The attack exploded from her blade, a massive arc of fire that sliced through everything in front of her.

  ZHOOOOOSH!

The sound hit them like a physical blow. Everyone behind her threw their hands over their faces, squinting against the blazing light and scorching heat that felt like standing too close to a volcano.

When the roar finally died down and they dared to look again, they saw what the Number 1 Hunter could really do. Her attack had completely vaporized the Treant, not even ash remained.

The fiery slash had carved a burning scar through the forest that stretched for a mile, leaving nothing but blackened earth and glowing embers floating in the smoky air.

The Nightmarish Treant, with all its tricks and ancient power, was gone. Just like that.

"Incredible..." Ethan breathed, his voice filled with awe as he stared at the destruction.

The team slowly gathered around Emberlyn as she lowered her sword, their faces showing exhaustion mixed with deep respect.

"We actually did it!" Elise shouted, unable to hide the relief in her voice. "We really did it!"

Emberlyn wiped sweat from her forehead and gave them a small smile. "Yeah, we did good out there. All of us."

As they started walking back through the smoking forest, Ethan found himself looking at Emberlyn. She glanced back at him, and for just a second, something flickered between them, like a spark of recognition, or maybe something deeper.

Even though she couldn't remember their past, there was still... something there.

Then she looked away, but that feeling hung in the air between them like an unspoken promise.
