In a post-apocalyptic future, the world above ground has been decimated and taken over by the new gods. Only the manna and lifegas provided by geysers made by the old gods make the underground world inhabitable to people. Those who have gained powers beyond comprehension are allowed to enter the surface world, promised by the new gods that their duty is to make it safe again.
