Chapter 9 - Dreams

Night ran towards the center of the village in order to get lost in the crowd. The village was quite large, at least for a small child, and it was easy to get lost down the many streets and alleyways. His goal was to find a way to the edge of the village’s territory which was guarded by a huge magic barrier.

Early in the morning there were a lot of people going to and from their houses and their jobs which allowed for Night to inconspicuously meander his way through the crowds without being noticed. This was crucial because if any of the adults figured out where he was going, they would also try to stop him just as his mother did.

Night emerged from the busy streets into a cool alleyway which led behind many major buildings. The path was long, but very straightforward. After a few minutes of walking through the many twists and turns of the alleyway, he finally saw the plains at the end of the corridor.

Slowly he walked toward the end of the alleyway and peeked his head around the corner to make sure no one was watching. When he was clear, he booked it and ran as fast as he could across the vast Azure Plains until he finally reached the wall of the huge magic dome which imprisoned the villagers here.

‘So this is it, the one thing that's keeping us here. How strong must the barrier be… in order to keep so many powerful people locked up for years?’

Night slowly raised his hand and reached out in front of him to touch the dimly lit transparent runes of the barrier. He hesitated, but knew that he had to continue. As his fingertips finally touched the magic barrier, they surprisingly passed right through.

‘What? This is a barrier right?’

Curious, Night attempted to stick his entire arm through, and with no resistance it just passed through. His hand was now on the other side of the thin barrier and he could feel the breeze of the outside world on his fingertips.

Night chuckled to himself, ‘Am I the chosen one or something? This feels way too easy, like I could just casually stroll out of here whenever I want or something.’

He pulled his arm back through the barrier and just stared at the scenery of the outside world for a bit. The vast plains of blue grass and iridescent flowers went on for miles with small groves of blue trees dotting the landscape. Far in the distance there were huge jagged mountains which seemed to surround the plains on all sides and were consistently covered in a thick black storm. The only ways past the mountains were to either go through the man made tunnels or climb the treacherous stormy peaks. To the villagers, everything beyond the mountain range was a complete mystery.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

The familiar, but mysterious mountains gave Night a wondrous sense of curiosity that was hard to hold back. In the many books he had read, there were many vastly different landscapes along which the characters ventured through: shadowy forests with gigantic trees that covered the bright sky above, harsh dry deserts dotted with beautiful oases that teemed with life, long never-ending coastlines with waves crashing at their sandy beaches, and snowy tundras that sparkled with magical beauty in the moonlight.

Night dreamed of seeing it all with his own eyes, a dream which could never come true in the confinement of this village. This is why he needed to get out, he just couldn’t deal with it for much longer. Of the thirteen long and boring years that Night had been alive, the village and the villagers had never changed. Of course the layout of the village would change from time to time when a new building was added, but this would ultimately just make the already cramped village even more crowded.

Night believed that the people were psychologically trapped, the rumors about this horrible tragedy which would occur if you step outside of the barrier had been passed on for generations, which only served to spark fear in the minds of the villagers.

This barrier, as Night has now come to know, is completely faulty and was never truly a barrier in the first place. Night speculated that it was only placed here as a deterrent and not an actual threat. Such as if you showed someone an apple, who had never heard of an apple before, and told them it was poisonous, they would most likely avoid it. They have no proof to know if it's poisonous or not, the only judgement they can make is based on what you told them. They would most likely never try to eat the apple unless they saw solid proof that it was actually completely harmless, of course this solid proof would never come unless they tried it for themselves.

Night was determined to be the one to take the first bite, he would be the one to start a revolution in this humble village and show everyone that they didn’t need to stay here for their entire lives, and that there was more to the world than this shabby village.

But before all this, Night was determined to do something that he's always wanted to do. He wanted to be alone in nature, lay down on the soft grass and just watch as the stars twinkled in the night sky and as the moon passed above him from horizon to horizon.

It was one of his many boxes to check off on his adventure bucket list, and for a while he believed that it would be impossible to achieve. The village’s population had already well surpassed its holding limit which meant that wherever you went, there was probably already someone else there.

Night was already gushing at the idea of camping out in the serene plain for at least one night, before he would have to inevitably send the rest of the villagers out to disturb its natural beauty.

He thought, 'I'll probably just need a few supplies for the night, a little food, some water, some blankets, a fire would be nice so I’ll take some firewood too.’

He backed away from the barrier and took a look at the picturesque landscape one more time before he started trekking back to his house. His mom was surely going to be mad at him, but just like before, he wouldn’t allow her to impede on his dreams. If he wanted to actually save this village then he would have to disregard all the opposition, no matter if it comes from the people that he loves.
