Chapter 8 - Lies

The sun was beginning to set over the horizon. On the top of the dark tower, the light of their campfire shone bright, like a beacon over the lands below. As it slowly got darker and darker, the deep red glow in Night’s eyes began to become more prominent. It was similar to Demon’s eyes, yet it was much more ominous and bright.

Night looked down in a somber way, as if it pained him to remember the events that he was about to share.

Night looked at them sternly and said in a dark voice, “Let me recount my own experiences of the aftermath of the Great War… it’ll truly be the only way that you can understand the pain and suffering that this world goes through.”

He paused for a bit, and then began speaking, “It all began when I was a young boy, not much younger than you guys…”

Night woke up in his bed surrounded by the dark stone walls of his own room. His house was a cold and quite shabby little cave that had been dug out not too long ago by the humans who created this village. He had been living here, in this village with his mother and father for his entire life. Night was also lacking his long black horns at this point in his life.

He was told by his parents that it was forbidden for them to leave the village. When he was younger he just mindlessly obliged, but as he became a teenager, he became a lot more curious and wanted to ask his parents for the true reason.

Night walked over to the dining room and sat down while waiting for his mom to serve breakfast.

Night’s mom looked at him from across the room and said in a loving tone, “Good Morning Night! Breakfast will be done in a few minutes.”

“Good morning mom. I’d like to have a talk with you for a little bit when you finish cooking if you have time.”

She looked a bit caught off guard, “Well… sure! You know you can talk to me about anything alright?”

Night said under his breath, too quiet to be heard, “Yeah, we’ll see if that's true.”

Night’s mother walked over to the table and set a plate of eggs and toast in front of Night and in front of herself. Night’s dad wasn’t home because he has to leave early for work everyday. The two of them decided to finish eating first before they talked so the food didn't get cold.

Night’s mom asked him with a curious tone, “So, what did you wanna talk about honey?”

Night looked visibly nervous and was fidgeting under the table, “Uhm… I just wanted to ask about why we can’t leave the village. I know you said that you couldn’t tell me, but I think I’m ready to learn about it.”

She looked at Night with a slight panic in her eyes and said, “Well, honey… it's not about a matter of being ready… it's just that I can’t tell you… ever.”

“Why can’t you tell me!? I thought you said that I could ask you about anything, right?”

“That's true… for anything else. You can ask me about anything else, but not that. It’s not that I don’t want to tell you, it's because if I tell you… then you and this entire village will be in danger.”

Night looked disappointed and pissed off, “Oh, I didn’t know that it was that important… that it was that important to make up such stupid lies just in order to not tell your son something! Why would just saying something to me in private affect everyone in the village?”

She began to tear up a bit upon hearing those words from her son. “It's not like that… I love you Night, and I would never lie to you. You just have to believe me, please!”

Night scoffed at her and got up from the table, “Fine if you won’t tell me, then I’ll just have to find out for myself!”

Night put on his shoes and stomped toward the front door, he opened it and looked back at his mother who was hurrying to stop him. He stepped outside and started running towards the center of the village.

Night’s mom yelled at him from the house, her cries filled with fear, “Get back here Night! Please don’t do what I think you're going to do! You’ll be putting yourself and everyone else in danger…”

Her voice got quieter and quieter as Night ran further towards the village. He looked back for a second and felt kind of bad, but he was persistent in his wishes so he didn’t stop.

‘I'm not gonna let some stupid lie get in the way of my adventures. Danger… What danger? I’m going to travel the world some day just like the brave adventurers in the stories, so one way or another I’ll have to leave this shabby village eventually… no matter who tries to get in my way.’
