It did take around half an hour, when they finally moved up in the queue and they put up their identification. Or rather, it was Valkorion who was putting up the papers because it was in their best interests that Melisandre remained within the carriage wagon.
He didn't really want to risk running into some fanatic believer of the Church of the Dragon God who would go and report them to the Church for being in cahoots with the Red Temple that the Church of the Dragon God viewed as a heretical terrorist evil cult organization and whatever else together.
Fortunately enough, with the identification papers that were bearing the sigil of the Ferros Cn, the Legionaries were not making any trouble for them, as they allowed them to enter the Vontis without any problems.
They didn't even search through the carriage wagon that they were using, most probably thinking that Valkorion was someone very important and rich, so coupled with the seal of the Ferros Cn, they didn't dare to make any unnecessary problems for him at the check-up station.
Usually, the procedure would be the thorough search of the entire carriage wagon, but with the stamp of the Ferros Cn, it wasn't the case, and they were able to continue into the Vontis without any problems.
Right now, their carriage didn't stop but instead headed towards the Bck Walls in the distance, as that was the true core of the city. Bck Walls is a great oval of fused Bck Stone built fifty to fifty-five meters high in the eastern half of Vontis, often called "Old Vontis".
The Bck Walls separated the initial settlement of the Vontis, which was built by the first Dragonlords who started colonizing the area many years ago. Nowadays, the Old Vontis repressed the true core of the city and its heart.
Behind the Bck Walls, there was a rge byrinth of paces, courtyards, towers, temples, cloisters, bridges, and celrs. All of the most important facilities of the city were located behind the Bck Walls, in the Old Vontis.
This was actually the first time in his life, that he saw the famed Bck Walls of the Valyria Freehold.
In the Cartharys, they were not used really that much, aside from a few fortifications, but here in the Old Vontis, the entire inner region of the city was enveloped by the set of Bck Walls.
Valkorion's targetted destination was also located within the Old Vontis, as he was heading towards the main store of the Cn Ferros in this pce.
Right now, they also needed to be pretty careful, because this was also the area where the Church of the Dragon Gods had one of their main headquarters within the territory of the Valyrian Freehold.
One of their main temples was located within the Old Vontis, as it was one of the rgest buildings in the entire city. Fortunately enough, with the stamp of the Cn Ferros on his identification papers, he had a permit to pass through the Bck Walls and enter the Old Vontis.
Soon enough, their carriage wagon arrived at another checkpoint, this time, the one that was separating the Old Vontis from the rest of the city, as they were standing in front of majestic Bck Walls.
Simir to the procedure before, when he gave the identification papers that were signed up by the Cn Ferros, they let him pass through the gate without any problems. While the rest of the city was bustling with people and was full of life of many kinds, the Old Vontis was far more modest in this aspect.
Compared to the countless pedestrians that were walking through the roads and streets of the city, in the Old Vontis, there were only a few people on the streets, mostly the Pure-Blooded Valyrians, Legionaries of the Legion, rich merchants and other simir people.
The Old Vontis, as its almost separate entirety from the rest of the Vontis, had a special policy on the people entering in and out. They were not really keen on allowing foreigners to enter the city and pass through the Bck Walls; one needed to have a special permit or something.
"We would be soon reaching the area for the visitors, where we would park the carriage and then do our things."
Valkorion noted down as they were approaching the visitor area of the Old Vontis. This was a specific area for the non-residents of the Old Vontis who had permission to enter the old city for the time being.
All carriages and vehicles were required to be put away in this area, where a specific pce was created for them.
Unlike many would expect, the Valyrian cities and City States were rather organized, and there were many rules, ws, and regutions about the behavior in the city and with what it was possible to enter and move through the city itself.
"I will be remaining in the carriage till the sunset; afterwards, I will join you."
Contrary to Valkorion, Melisandre was going to remain in the carriage wagon till sunset, and she would then join him. Because Vontis was the pyground of the Church of the Dragon Gods, and she, as the worshipper of the Lord of Light, needed to be extra careful in this pce.
"You should be careful... this pce is dangerous for the people like you, and I need you live."
At least for the time being, because she was his only choice of getting alive and without permanent injuries from the Orange Shore. But for whatever reason, she insisted on going to the Vontis; even despite his loud protest, it led to oblivion.
And here they were.
"You don't need to worry about me; I am far more capable of taking care of myself even in this hostile territory."
Even though she was confident, Valkorion didn't want any kind of problems. The st thing that he wanted was to have the Church of the Dragon Gods on his tail. That would be spending ednign of the day, because the religious fanatics were troublesome to deal with.
Valkorion just wanted to have peace and no to be in any problems if he had to say anything about that. In the end, in a few years, the Church of the Dragon God would either cease to exist together with the Valyrian Freehold or become a hollow husk of what it once was.
If he had to bet, he would say that the Church would for sure survive because the Church of the Dragon Gods had many followers also outside of the Valyrian Peninsu in various City-States under the control of the Valyrian Freehold and practically all around the world.
Yet, if the core of the Church perishes in the Doom of the Valyrian, then it would only be a matter of time until the other Churches and Secret Organizations made their move on them.
Due to his foreknowledge that the Valyria would soon enough perish, Valkorion was avoiding any conflict with the people as much as possible and being the 1st-tier coward. He needed to remain in the Valyrian Freehold to use their resources to increase his power and establish his power base before the Doom.
Afterward, everything would go to hell either way.
