A New Deal

He walked into hell, that confident singer

He worked his way, passed every challenge

He searched for the love in his dream, Eurydice

She waited in the underworld, morose and blue

She paced about with not a thing to do

She dreamed one day her love would come, Orpheus

He stood before the keeper of souls

He was challenged for his boldness

He would be given one shot

  She stood before her love

  She was given one command

She would walk behind in silence

He would lead in the front

  He would look forward

  He would not speak

  She kept her side

  He certainly tried

  She didn't quite make it

  He turned too quick aside

She was gone, forever in hell

He was lost, devastated and distraught

She would have a story no more

He would live out his lonely life

  Rewrite

  He saw the exit close

  He stopped before the end

He stepped backwards, back towards Hades

  She was confused

  She stepped in turn

She made her way back and he never did turn

  He stood afore the king

  He pleaded a new deal

  He sang again

"Life out there is too short to live

Grant for me a new living deal

We stay behind and do not leave

We, never to part, never to grieve"

  She smiled softly at him

  He waited in silent worry

  She pulled him around

He was now with her, trapped

Hades did laugh, this loophole he did allow

The implication was known well, but a new deal was struck

For as long as there was love to give

Orpheus and Eurydice, their loving tragedy they would never see
