Chapter 9 What a pity
"Xiao Lan, are you really going with Mom?" Fu Peiyao asked softly while her mother was out making breakfast. The foundry wasn't bad, but Pei Shan had been admitted to university after all.
"Third sister, don't worry, I have my own ideas." Fu Peilan replied in a low voice, thought for a moment, and then said, "If third sister can replace dad to take over this position, that would be great."
The textile mill is far from home, the work is hard, and it's also a day-and-night shift job, which really doesn't suit a young girl like Fu Pei-yao to work.
"What are you thinking about?" Fu Peiyao smiled lightly, "When my dad was alive, he wanted to transfer me over to be a worker but didn't succeed, let alone as a statistician. They require education, what can I do?"
"What a pity..." Fu Peilan murmured.
"What?"
"It's okay, I'm going to wash my face. Third sister, you sleep a bit longer, isn't it not your night shift today?" After finishing speaking, Fu Peilan took the basin and toothbrush to go to the kitchen to fetch water.
"Pei Shan, come here."
Just after washing her face, Fu's mother pulled her into her own room, took out a bottle of Da Youyi Snowflake Cream from the drawer, twisted open the lid and applied some to Fu Pei Ran's cheeks. "Quickly wipe it off, it smells good."
Fu Peilan twitched the corner of her mouth and raised the back of her hand to wipe off the cream, "Mom, this smells too strong."
"Is the sore spot still painful?" Fu's mom raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Don't move, Mom will apply some ointment for you."
Fu's mother brushed away her daughter's hand and evenly applied the milky white face cream to Fu Peiran's face, then smiled and said, "My daughter is really beautiful, she'll be a factory flower when she gets to the factory!"
Fu's mother was extremely pleased with her little daughter's obedience today, Pei Shan is still a good child as long as she doesn't quarrel with her, now that she has to go to work and earn money, their family will be more comfortable in the future.
"Pei Shan, mom knows it's hard on you, but think about our family, I have no choice either." Fu's mother saw her daughter being so understanding today and felt a pang of heartache. The long-lost maternal love suddenly emerged again. "From now on, you are the great benefactor of our family, your brother and I will be grateful to you, don't worry, after Pei Qi finishes university and gets a good job, mom will definitely let him repay your sacrifice!"
Fu Peilan sneered inwardly, letting Fu Pei Qi repay her? She couldn't wait for this lifetime and wouldn't be able to bear it!
While having breakfast, Fu's two brothers heard that Fu Peirong was really going to work at the foundry and were shocked with wide eyes.
"Didn't you go to university?" Fu Peilin asked with an open mouth.
"They all go to work, what's the point of studying? The foundry workers earn more than university graduates!" Fu Mama hastily interrupted her eldest son's question, fearing that he would say too much and stir up his younger sister's dissatisfaction again. She had only just managed to persuade her to agree to go to work.
Fu Peilin's lips moved twice, but he still didn't continue speaking. To be honest, he was quite happy to have a university student as a sister, it would be great to show off, and that's all his life would amount to. If his younger siblings could make something of themselves, maybe they could even help pull him up, but unfortunately, almost all of his income went to the state, leaving him with an empty wallet, so no matter what ideas he had, nobody would take them seriously.
Fu Pei Lin raised his eyelids and glanced at his younger brother who was about to speak, although their mother always said that he, the eldest son, was heartless and didn't have a good head on his shoulders. However, he knew that whatever came out of his little brother's mouth now would not be anything good. Unfortunately, their mother just happened to dote on this clever younger son of hers.
Fu Peilin sympathetically glanced at his younger sister, but was powerless to help. He still hoped that Mother Fu would find him a daughter-in-law, and now he had offended his younger brother, who might secretly conspire with the old lady against him.
"Qingcheng University is a pity if you don't go." Fu Peiqi said lightly.
Although Fu Pei Lan is a maid and not likable, if she had the opportunity to attend university, upon graduation, she should have been assigned a decent job. After all, it's one of the top schools in the province. Unfortunately, she won't have that chance in this lifetime. A faint smile appeared on Fu Pei Qi's lips.
Fu Peilan looked up and stared at him, responding sarcastically, "What a pity!" If Fu Pei Qi couldn't get into university even after re-taking the exam next year, the foundry probably wouldn't want him either.
"Pei Qi, stop causing trouble." Fu's mom was somewhat dissatisfied, what's wrong with these two dead kids today? They don't even consider the occasion when speaking, and they don't know that their mother is feeling uneasy.
Until Fu Peilan was handed over to the head of the personnel department, Fu's mother's anxious heart finally settled down a bit. "Director Zhao, our daughter has just graduated and is young and straightforward. Please take care of her for the sake of her father."
"Don't worry, Aunt Fu. Can I still mistreat Brother Fu's daughter?" Zhao Dejun smiled and sent off Madam Fu from the office, "Sister, you go back home first. I'll get the kid to fill out a form, then take her to the workshop for a look. The work of a statistician isn't tiring, it's just a bit tedious. But it shouldn't be difficult for a high school student like Peishan."
After seeing off Fu Mama, who kept turning back to look at her daughter, Zhao Dejun kindly asked Fu Pei Lan to sit down in the wooden chair across from his desk. He then poured a cup of water from a thermos and handed it to her, saying "Pei Lan, have some water. Your father and I were on good terms in the past, so just call me Uncle Zhao. If you need anything in the future, don't hesitate to come find me."
Fu Peilan took the glass and thanked him. Although now factories have a "takeover" for the sake of taking care of employees' children, it is rare to be really arranged to the original work position of parents, most are another arrangement for a new person. After all, education, experience and craftsmanship are different, and the original post takeover is not scientific.
Fu's father passed away more than half a year ago, and logically speaking, someone should have taken over the position of statistician long ago. Although she had attended high school, she lacked experience. If it weren't for Director Zhao constantly helping her family in front of the factory director, this relatively good position wouldn't have been kept until now. Thinking about this, Fu Peilan felt a bit guilty and lowered her head, fearing that she would disappoint this kind uncle.
"Pei Shan, come and fill out this form. Later I'll ask you to go to the workshop for a look."
Fu Peilan looked at the form in front of her and slowly stretched out her hand to push the paper back to Zhao Dejun.
Zhao Dejun was taken aback, "What's wrong, child?"
Fu Peilan bit her lower lip and suddenly felt a little hard to speak, but she would never come to the foundry.
"Uncle Zhao... I still want to go to school."
Zhao Dejun sighed, he also knew that this child was excellent. When her father was alive, he had already said that he would support his daughter's education, but unfortunately... Although he did not agree with Fu's mother's approach of sacrificing her daughter for the sake of her son, he could understand it. He pitied the little girl, as Fu's mother was unable to afford educating both children and was biased towards boys, ultimately harming the girl. If she couldn't finish school and get a good job, wouldn't that be even more pitiful? This was also why he had insisted on reserving the statistician position for the Fu family despite the pressure - he feared that the girl would end up with nothing.
"Uncle Zhao, I'm very sorry." Fu Peilan said softly but firmly.
"Girl, think about it again." Zhao Dejun advised, "You should know that this position is coveted by many people. I've already done my best to help you keep it until now. If you don't complete the registration procedures today, if you want to come back in the future, you can only work as a worker on the production line." Maybe there won't even be an opportunity to work as a worker, after all, she gave up the opportunity herself.
"I've thought it through clearly, I just feel very sorry for Uncle Zhao." Fu Peilan said in a low voice.
"I'm fine, I just worry about you." Zhao Dejun shook his head and saw that Fu Peilan had made up her mind, so he didn't try to persuade her anymore. Fu's mother was willing for her daughter to work and earn money, but Fu Peilan wasn't a three-year-old child anymore. Since she had made up her mind, who could really force her? Continuing like this would likely have a bad influence at the workplace too. He had helped the Fu family until now, which was also a way of repaying his deceased friend.
"Since you've thought it through, go home and have a good talk with your mom." Zhao Dejun thought for a moment, then pulled out 50 yuan from his pocket and stuffed it into Fu Peishan's hand. "Peishan, take this money, no matter what happens in the future, whether or not you can smoothly attend school, it's just my little intention as an elder, consider it as if I'm giving it to you on behalf of your dad."
When Zhao Dejun mentioned the late Fu, Fu Peilan's eyes became slightly moist, but she firmly returned the money. "Uncle Zhao, I can't accept your money. My family has already troubled you too much. If I insisted on going to college, then I shouldn't be a burden to anyone, whether it's you or my mom."
"You, oh, why are you so stubborn?" Zhao Dejun looked at the girl who put the money on the table and turned to leave, sighing helplessly. He picked up the job application form on the table again, took a look, and then put it back in the drawer. He walked towards the director's office. He knew that during this time, several people had bypassed him and directly asked the director for favors for the statistician position, but because he had promised the Fu family, the director gave him face and didn't agree. Now that Fu Peishan was determined not to do it, he also had to send a personal favor to his old leader, so let the director decide on this new candidate.
Fu Peilan left the foundry but didn't dare to go home directly. If Fu's mother knew that she had secretly quit, she would definitely not forgive her, and might even make a scene at the factory to keep her job. Rather than that, it was better for her to wait until things were settled before telling her family.
Fu Peilan smiled silently and handed over five cents to the bus conductor, "To the furniture factory."
