Chapter 89 - Research

Gaius closed his eyes and then tried to focus on the exercises that he had learned. If he was able to use the three processes at once, then the spell would activate. The first step was to cover his hand with mana and then touch the wound. That was easy enough, but he also had to use it in a way that wouldn’t affect his parameters… that was difficult since he was trained to be able to do that.

Gaius thought that the pain would be a good motivator, but it was actually getting in the way, so he couldn’t help but sigh. For a moment, he decided to take it slowly and just go look for some books about runes. They should have runes as well able to heal wounds, so he could be just being wasting time. However, he stopped himself from doing that… Gaius knew that one of his few good qualities was being methodical and skipping steps wouldn’t help him in any way.

Gaius leaned back on the chair and supported his head with his hands… it was still mid-afternoon, but he was considering taking a break from all that training and studying. Maybe that would help him somehow.

Photosynthesis: by absorbing sunlight, the creature can create energy to heal or to grow faster. You can use this skill to recover 0.1 points of health, mana, and stamina per minute according to the level of the skill.

“I never got hurt, but with this wound and skill, I might get some insight on how to use light magic,” Gaius thought and then got up from his chair.

After leaving the library, Gaius went to the training fields… there was a lot of noise there since some kids were training their spells against each other. In the last few days, Gaius saw some of the kids training there… the magic circles were used to decrease damage caused and heal wounds instantly. They used the mana of those standing there, so the sparring matches didn’t last long. Still, they were very convenient.

As usual, Gaius headed to the corner of one of the empty training fields and then enjoyed the light of the sun. It didn’t take long for him to feel his wound slowly closing. After fifteen minutes, the wound was closed, and the pain was gone. During that time, Gaius also felt his body absorbing the energy, and he also felt the extra mana being slowly drained to heal his wound.

“I can tell the frequency that Arlana mentioned… but reaching that level of control is difficult,” Gaius thought and then sighed. “I guess I will have to try to use that feeling as a reference to replicate the process and to be able to do that, I will have to hurt myself again. Fantastic, I am so smart that I deserve the Nobel prize.”

In the end, Gaius couldn’t help but start a pity party by thinking that the Archmage was right… he had no talent or skills of himself to speak of. He had a broken system that made him insanely strong for his age, but nothing else.

Still, if he didn’t have talent, he at least could show his guts by wounding himself without wasting time and using the skill of Photosynthesis. Maybe he had guts or maybe he was just insane, but he did that anyway.

Instead of the library, Gaius spent his free time in the next few days in the training fields looking like he was meditating, but he was just burning his mana, trying to copy the feeling of Photosynthesis when it was in effect.

Since he was stubborn, in the end, Gaius finally began to notice some differences in the healing speed of his wound. It was barely noticeable at first, but after one week, he was finally able to close a small wound by himself when he was in his bedroom. It took a while as well.

“It didn’t turn into a skill since it didn’t belong to a summon… but I guess it is better than nothing,” Gaius thought and then closed his hand. “Still, two weeks for the most basic spell… this won’t do it.”

In the end, it took another week for Gaius to feel comfortable to show the spell to Arlana… he improved a fair bit after all this time. Wounds that made him lose one hundred points of health were restored in half an hour. That was only because he kept hurting himself all the time to keep using the spell. Little by little, his control was improving, and that was the only thing he could do, insist on that slow progress.

“Very well, you have mastered the most basic healing spell. Congratulations,” Arlana declared. “It usually takes a month for the students to be able to do this.”

Gaius felt like sighing… some of the students had already mastered the spell and they didn’t have to put holes in their hands to be able to do so. Still, he soon calmed down, since that was the first real obstacle that he had faced since he had been born in that world.

“I guess I can focus a bit on alchemy now… or perhaps I should just read the books about rune crafting,” Gaius thought while rubbing his chin after he sat on his seat in the classroom.

Until now, the alchemy lessons only involved the students memorizing what each ingredient for the potions could do. They were starting with the basics as well… potions for headaches, potions for stomachaches, potions to help with sleep… it seemed that they had catalogued every single potion that could help them with those kinds of problems.

“Lucia uses some of the herbs, but she doesn’t make potions with them. She makes medicine,” Gaius thought. “The kids here won’t be allowed to use the ingredients unless their skills are guaranteed. Otherwise, it would be a waste of materials.”

Gaius had told his minions that had arrived in that country to look for all those herbs and they found some. Still, he had yet to find a chance to make them himself… he could tell his underlings how to turn them into potions, but then what? The best option would be for them to sell those, but where?

That country had a magic academy with thousands of students producing those kinds of things for them, so they didn’t have to buy from anyone else. They definitely wouldn’t buy from strangers, even at lesser costs.

The best option would be for them to sell those in other countries… but that will take a while since they had to cross such massive distances. It felt like Gaius’ troubles were never-ending. In any case, he quickly memorized all the ingredients of the potions that could be made using plants. The first book that taught alchemy only mentioned those. Weirdly enough… he looked for the next ones, but he didn’t find it.
