Chapter 85 - Courses

It was the voice of someone tired but not old, so Gaius furrowed his eyebrows. When he was about to push the door, the girl stopped him since she was breathing roughly. Climbing that many stairs has worn her out. Fortunately, she recovered after taking a few deep breaths and then became composed as if nothing had happened.

Gaius furrowed his eyebrows at that. It was probably something she had been trained for… Regardless; it didn’t matter at all and he had other things more important in his mind. Eventually, they opened the door and then saw the office of the Archmage. It looked more like a library with so many books and scrolls inside.

The Archmage didn’t look that old. In fact, he didn’t have a single strand of grey hair in his head. He was writing something on a scroll and then raised his eyes for a moment to look at Gaius and the girl. He was wearing glasses that were round and he had a dark robe too, so at least he looked that much like a wizard.

“I was wondering if you two were planning to show up today.” The Archmage got up and then put his hands behind his back after he massaged his eyes. “I apologize in advance if I sound a bit grumpy, but it is the start of the year. There is too much work to be done. My name is Laws, but people around the city also call me the Archmage. You can use either way to refer to me. I don’t mind.”

“My name is Gaius,” Gaius said after he crossed his arms.

“... And I am Aisha. It is a pleasure to meet you, sir,” the girl said while bowing gracefully and holding the ends of her skirt a bit.

Gaius finally learned her name and he couldn’t help but wonder now if he had been a bit of an asshole for never asking her name or the guards and the maids… maybe his power was getting to his head, even though he thought that he just wanted to avoid people with weird obsessions like rich people and those who worked for Ekirenton. He felt like it was a proper reason, but he was a master at making up excuses for his shortcomings, so he couldn’t say that he was being logical for logical reasons.

“You seem like the type who would do well here, even though you are having a late start,” Laws said after he stopped in front of Aisha and studied her eyes. “As for you, you don’t look that promising, even though Lord Ekirenton told me that you can use some magic. Weirdly enough, you also have a high amount of mana. How curious.”

Gaius wondered if the old man could use Observe as well… Gaius didn’t notice any magic being used, but he could tell that Laws wasn’t saying nonsense out of his ass. In any case, saying that he didn’t have talent was a bit annoying, even though he probably had a point. He had talent for a bunch of useless stuff, but he couldn’t boast about it.

Gaius could use simple magic, but it took many years for him to learn those basic spells by himself. Maybe that showed how little talent for magic he had, which was a bit troublesome. Still, Gaius didn’t let that faze him and he kept his eyes sharp. He was an old-school guy despite his age and believed that there was no point in setting his own limitations.

“In any case, things work in a bit of a weird way so you will have a lot of freedom in the magic academy,” Laws said as he began to walk around the room. “As long as you follow the rules, of course. The number one rule is: don’t use magic if an instructor doesn’t allow you to use it within the magic academy. The second rule is: no shouting. This is a place of learning and focus. The third rule isn’t to avoid problems, but it is to guarantee that you deserve a seat in the academy. Every year, you need to do certain activities for each course and obtain a certain number of points to graduate from the course. Each one of them has different requirements, so you need to be careful on how many courses you decide to take.”

As if he decided to show off, Laws used his magic to take two books from the shelves around and made them fly to Gaius and Aisha’s hands. They were copies of each other and then revealed more about the courses they could take within the magic academy.

“The courses can receive new members up to the first part of the year, but it will be hard to pass the course the later you join,” Laws said. “The lessons started two weeks ago, so I would advise you to decide as soon as possible. Also… take these with you and come wearing them the next time.”

Laws put his hands together and then touched the ground before some small boxes appeared on the floor. It definitely had been a summoning technique, so Gaius raised his eyebrows. In any case, Gaius found a simple cloak for mages inside. It was white… even though he found students with cloaks of different colors in the city. In any case, summoning technique… he wondered how much of that was similar to his power as a summoner… he had to study that, eventually. Hopefully, soon enough.,

“You can come to talk to me if you have any more questions, but you should register with the teachers for the lessons instead, until a later time,” Laws said and then returned to his chair.

Laws began to work again. So soon Gaius and Aisha left the room with the boxes and the books in hands. Gaius picked those since he knew that she would get exhausted getting down the stairs with the extra weight.

  “... Thank you,” Aisha said.

“Just trying to avoid seeing you fall down the stairs,” Gaius replied while holding all the stuff with one hand and reading one of the books with the other. He soon furrowed his eyebrows at the number of courses that one could take in the magic school… there were a number of them. The first pages only mentioned the courses instead of explaining them in detail.

Elemental Magic - Fire Magic, Water Magic, Earth Magic, Air Magic

Arcane Magic - General Arcane Magic, Telekinesis, Dimensional Magic

Dark Magic - Necromancy, Blood Magic, Curses and Hexes.

Light Magic - Healing Magic, Holy Magic

Mind Magic - Illusion Magic, Mentalism, Empathy

Nature Magic - Druidic Magic, Shapeshifting, Elemental Binding

Alchemical Magic - Alchemy, Runecrafting, Enchantment

  Time Magic - Chronomancy

Combat Magic - Battle Magic, Defensive Magic, Conjuration

Advanced Theoretical Magic - Metamagic, Leyline Studies, Magical Ethics

Miscellaneous Magic - Divination, Weather Magic, Sound Magic

The variety was amazing… but there were some things that people probably shouldn’t learn. Still, that was still being researched and taught, since all that knowledge was being used to defend their country.

“... It looks like some courses have requirements,” Aisha said while taking a peek at Gaius’ book. “For time magic lessons, one would need to pass the third level of light magic, dark magic, and arcane magic.”

“It makes sense a lot of knowledge needs to be taught before something like time magic can even begin to be understood,” Gaius said and then closed the book when they reached the corridor.

“What fields are you interested in?” Aisha asked.

Gaius stopped to think for a moment… time was a limited resource, so he couldn’t learn everything, even if he wanted. Considering what Laws said, perhaps that was also impossible as well. In any case, Aisha didn’t seem scared of him anymore and that was weird, since he didn’t do anything in particular to improve his image.

“I guess light magic and alchemy magic,” Gaius replied.

Aisha looked confused… she probably thought that as a warrior, Gaius would want to learn magic that would make him more famous on the battlefield. He wanted to learn light magic to teach his underlings in order to make sure they won’t die left and right and he was interested in alchemy magic because the field itself was interesting and a lot less limited.
