Departure

I'm still trying to process what just happened. To be honest it was so sudden that only now is the gravity of what just happened starting to sink in. I mean I just spoke to the literal god of this planet ... well, goddess actually if the voice is anything to go by. I mean sure I didn't learn much beyond what I already guessed. Namely that I was brought here for a purpose. The question is how am I supposed to stop the world from being destroyed? If that's even what I'm supposed to do.

I'm so lost in thought trying to process the realization of what just happened that it actually takes me ... I don't actually know how long to notice that Yuna is trying to get my attention. Focusing on her I apologies and quickly make up some excuse about being lost in thought. Not exactly far from the truth. I do briefly consider telling her what happened and what I just learned, but I decide not to until I can actually figure out how I'm supposed to prevent it.

Instead, I listen as Yuna tells me that they are through healing all the wounded. I could have figured that out by the simple fact that my experience points aren't going up anymore. I choose not to mention that little fact though. She goes on about how everyone in Eldenvale wants to thank me for what I did for the city. I don't actually feel like I did that much but I'm not going to argue with her. It did get rather embarrassing when the leadership declared it Turtle Day after naming me the official city guardian. Making the fact that I had already decided to leave more than a little awkward. That can wait till tomorrow though, tonight they are throwing a party. I've never been one to miss out on a good party, mainly because I've been invited to so few in my past life but that's neither here nor there.

The next day after everyone wakes up, I let Yuna know that I plan to leave. I also let her know that she and anyone else who wants to is welcome to come with me. To my surprise there are quite a few people who wish to join me. Some I've never meet before, Infact most of them I've never meet before. Apparently having the city, they live in under threat twice in the span of several days was enough for them. They decided that it was better to live on a mobile hospital. For most of them the thought process seems to be at least this way if something happens, they are guaranteed to get treated immediately. At least that was the impression I got through the telepathic bond when I reached out to them.

So, I guess I officially have ... I don't know really, residents. It's the only word that really fits. Calling them riders would imply that they are in control of where I go. They aren't exactly vermin or pests either, and calling them parasites would just be wrong. So, residents it is. Surprisingly a few of my new residents include adventurers. Some want to see the world. Some just want to be able to say they rode on a giant beast's back. Still, others on in it for the potential adventure of a lifetime.

What I wasn't prepared for is how ticklish having dozens of people on my back would be. I don't know if this is a common thing among all turtles, but I can feel them walking around up there and it's very distracting. With Yuna's group it wasn't too bad because they mostly sat still until we got to our destination. To alleviate this, I use my earth manipulation to place a thin layer of dirt on my shell. Well, thin from my perspective anyway. Apparently, it was around 30cm to 40cm depending on exactly where on my shell it was. Which is deep enough for most crops. That wasn't my plan but if they want to think that I'm certainly not going to stop them.

Eventually everyone that is coming has made it and all the goodbyes have been said. So, it's now time to pick a direction. I decide not to go south because I suspect that is towards the equator based on the information I have now. Which put's the goblin and orcs both marching north into perspective. I also decide not to go north at least not yet. That is where the reinforcements came from and while the people of Eldenvale accept me I'd rather not press my luck. A giant beast showing up outside the city gates unannounced usually doesn't end well if those old movies are anything to go by.

That leaves east or west. After a few minutes of deliberation, I decide to head east. I at least have some small idea of what lies that direction. As we get closer to the small town though it becomes clear that Edenvale itself wasn't the only place targeted. There's no evidence that it was orcs, but the timing is too uncanny for it to not be.

Sadly, none survived. Actually, scratch that, I sense movement under one of the rubble piles. Reaching out with my telepathy I locate a sapient mind. Something I only just realized I could do. Not that I had a reason to try before. At any rate upon asking if they are alright, I'm meet with relief, followed by confusion, then fear for some reason, ending in what I can only describe as reluctant acceptance. He tells me that him and about a dozen others were ordered to look after the young. The others went to draw the green giants away.

Now it's my turn to be confused. If giants had attacked surely, I would have seen them. The town isn't that far away from the city. Giants should easily be seen from a few kilometers away I would think. As I begin using gravity manipulation to help remove the rubble, I grow even more confused. He talks about how the green giants attacked the giants that used to live here. Now I realize that I haven't been in this world long, but I do remember this was clearly a human village not a giant village.

After clearing a few more bits of rubble the stranger thanks me for my help but I still can't see him. Even with my enhanced perception I can't see anyone there. using the telepathic link as a guide I focus my enhanced perception down even further and finally spot a rat of all things.
