Prologue - A normal day

Extract from the the book - 'On races, kingdoms and governance' chapter 5 - 'Humans'

The humans are both the most numerous and the least magically gifted of the 6 races, they are spread through the world and live in most of the cities, usually forming the backbone of the farming production and other menial tasks. Outside of capitals, or other cities of large size, humans live in small settlements or villages, usually under the protection of a noble, to whom they pay taxes. The live expectancy of the humans ranges between 60 to 80 years usually.

Usually 1 every 100 humans (give or take) will be sufficiently magically gifted to cast basic and intermediate spells, 1 every 1000 humans will be talented enough to be able to reach advanced magic and the number diminish further for both expert and master level magics (as there was not sufficient data to find those odds). The odds of a human becoming a mage are even lower, as humans are not innately magical they usually require training to use their magical gifts, so there are many humans with the gift of magic who will never find out if they have it or not, as they may live in towns far from any way to determine if they are magically gifted.

Regardless due to the high number of humans compared to the other races it is considered that the race with highest amount of mages at any given time are humans, if only for the speed at which they reproduce. Humans also show their diversity in the affinities they may have, as there does not seem to be any preferential affinities or otherwise for their race.

Waking up early is always difficult, more so after being on holidays for the past week, nevertheless I picked quickly changed clothes to avoid the morning cold, had a quick breakfast and went to work, coming back after having taken some days off is always difficult, as emails and tasks pile up with no one to take care of them.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

  - "Hey boss missed me while I was away?, is there any project you want me to look up first or should I continue with the one I had before?" I asked my direct superior while approaching him, he was a middle aged man recently married, with good humor, who seemed to love being stressed by work, and while sometimes this leads to being overworked, one could tell he did not enjoy making us have to work overtime.

  - "Barnabas, how was the leave, managed to rest up a bit?" said Roy, "we need to get the calculations of for the crane before next week, as we are going to begin the acquisition of materials and we need certainty regarding the materials, so it should be the priority now"

  - "Sure thing Roy" I say as I move towards my computer and sit on the office chair, dropping my weight on it as I have done for over a year and a half.

I finished my master's degree around 1.5 years ago in engineering, and have been working since then. Work is difficult, and while the pay is good for someone my age, it is a high stress job, as we are always behind schedule with more projects than personnel. The hours advance fast, as is usual when you have too many tasks and too few time, i stay a bit overtime to make sure the calculations on the structural integrity of the crane are finished and promptly pick up my bag and go to my car. Today is Monday, which means I must go to the gym, even if what I want most right now is to go home and drop dead on my bed, after 1 hour of exercise I go back to my apartment where I take a shower, prepare dinner and play some games while talking with some friends over voice chat.

Around 11:30 I brush my teeth and go to bed, ready to continue this routine. I tuck myself in the bed, find the perfect position, and think of being rich never to have to work ever again, until sleep finds me and sends me forward towards a new day.
