Chapter 13: Shadowed Labyrinth

Felix stood before the imposing entrance of The Shadowed Labyrinth, glancing at the trainer and scout beside him.

“Hey, Caroline,” he said, tapping his wrist device to pull up a few stats. “Do you think they count toward the player limit for the dungeon? Like, if we clear it together, will I still get credit for a solo achievement?”

Caroline’s voice crackled through his earpiece. “Good question. Based on your earlier quests, it seems that the system recognizes you as a solo player unless otherwise specified. So, it’s possible that their presence might negate your chances of getting the solo achievement.”

Felix nodded thoughtfully. “That would be annoying. I mean, this could be my first real chance to score a title for clearing a dungeon alone.”

“Titles often come with perks,” Caroline reminded him. “It could give you an edge later on.”

As Felix pondered over it, he stepped closer to the archway and felt an electrifying energy pulsing from within.

Suddenly, a notification flashed in his HUD:

  [Entering The Shadowed Labyrinth]

All XP gained and loot rewards will be added upon successful completion.

Felix grinned at that—so there was no rush; he could take his time.

“Okay,” he said, turning to his companions. “Let’s go in slow and steady.”

As they crossed the threshold into darkness, Felix felt an exhilarating thrill wash over him. The air inside was cool and damp, shadows clung to the walls like lurking phantoms.

The trainer hesitated as they entered. "What should we expect?"

“Probably some basic mobs first,” Felix replied confidently. “Just stay close and follow my lead.” He moved forward cautiously, rifle ready.

Just then, Caroline chimed in again with enthusiasm, “Viewers are excited to see what you’ll uncover! Let’s check out some comments!”

Felix raised an eyebrow but didn’t let himself get distracted as he listened intently.

“Oh! Someone just said: ‘Lix better not get lost in there!’” Caroline relayed with amusement.

He chuckled lightly at that but kept focused on their surroundings.

“Let’s not give them any reason to doubt us,” Felix said firmly as they ventured deeper into the labyrinthine tunnels.

The shadows shifted around them like whispers of warning as Felix kept scanning for enemies while also contemplating what kind of reward he might receive if he managed to clear this dungeon alone. He was determined; this run would set the tone for everything that followed.

Felix led the way, rifle raised as he navigated through the damp, echoing corridors of The Shadowed Labyrinth. The faint sound of dripping water echoed in the distance, blending with their soft footsteps. The air felt thick with anticipation.

“Keep an eye on those shadows,” Felix murmured, glancing back at the trainer and scout. “They could be hiding anything.”

The scout shivered slightly. “I’ve heard stories about this place—how players have vanished without a trace.”

Felix shot her a reassuring smile. “We’ll be fine. Just stick together.” He turned his attention back to the path ahead, his senses heightened.

Suddenly, Caroline’s voice broke through the silence. “Incoming hostiles! I’m detecting movement up ahead!”

Felix froze, heart racing as he scanned the darkness. A flicker of movement caught his eye—a shadow darting between two crumbling pillars.

“There!” he whispered sharply, pointing ahead. “Prepare for contact.”

As they advanced cautiously, two grotesque creatures emerged from the shadows—fanged beasts with glowing red eyes and sharp claws. Their bodies were twisted and hunched, moving with unsettling agility.

“Watch out!” Felix shouted as one lunged toward them.

He pulled the trigger just in time; the Specter .50 roared to life, sending an energy round crashing into the creature’s side. It howled in pain but didn’t go down.

The trainer gasped as she took cover behind a nearby pillar. “What are those things?”

“Shadow Beasts, level 10,” Felix replied, his voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through him as he quickly reloaded the Specter .50 with practiced hands. “Just focus on dodging while I take them out! We can’t let them surround us.”

He aimed again at the second beast just as it sprang forward, fangs bared. Felix fired off another shot that struck true—the creature staggered but remained on its feet.

The scout joined in now, throwing a rock to distract one of the beasts while Felix focused on finishing off the first one.

“Good thinking!” he called out before squeezing off another round that finally dropped it.

The remaining beast snarled angrily and charged at Felix, but Caroline interjected sharply: “Use Blinkstep now!”

Felix obeyed instinctively, teleporting out of harm’s way just as its claws slashed through where he’d stood moments before. He reappeared behind it and aimed for a clean shot.

“You got this!” Caroline encouraged from his earpiece.

Felix took a breath and steadied himself—this was what he trained for—and fired once more. The energy round hit home; the Shadow Beast let out a final roar before collapsing to the ground in a heap of darkness and smoke.

“Two down,” Felix said triumphantly as he glanced around for any further threats while his companions emerged from their hiding spots.

The trainer breathed heavily but smiled at him gratefully. “You really know what you’re doing.”

“Just warming up,” Felix replied confidently as he scanned their surroundings for loot or any signs of danger lurking within the shadows.

Felix knelt beside the fallen Shadow Beast, scanning the area for any hidden loot. As he rummaged through its dissipating form, a soft glow caught his eye from beneath a nearby stone.

“What’s that?” he muttered, reaching for the source of the light. His fingers brushed against something solid, and as he pulled it free, a notification flashed across his HUD:

  [Rare Item Acquired: Guild Token]

Felix’s brow furrowed in surprise. “A Guild Token? What’s this doing here?”

Caroline chimed in excitedly. “Guild Tokens are special items that grant various bonuses to members of a guild! They can enhance stats or provide unique perks for group activities.”

The trainer stepped closer, peering over Felix’s shoulder. “Can I see it?”

He turned the token in his hand; it was a beautifully crafted emblem, glimmering with an iridescent sheen. The symbol depicted two intertwining dragons encircled by stars—a representation of unity and strength.

“Wow,” she said softly. “That’s impressive. We should definitely take it back to the village.”

Felix nodded but hesitated, thinking of what this could mean for him if he used it. He wasn’t part of a guild anymore—at least not officially. The idea of joining back with Phoenix Reborn flickered through his mind like a distant flame.

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

“Let’s keep moving,” he finally decided, pocketing the token carefully.

As they pressed deeper into the labyrinth, Caroline continued to analyze their surroundings. “Keep an eye out for more enemies. The dungeon won’t let you progress without challenges.”

Just then, a low growl echoed from ahead—a chilling reminder that danger lurked around every corner.

Felix took position again, rifle raised and ready. “We’ll handle whatever comes next,” he reassured his companions.

The trainer acknowledged with a nod but cast a wary glance at the shadows slithering along the walls. “How many more creatures do you think are lurking down here?”

“Hard to say,” Felix replied, narrowing his eyes as he focused on the path ahead. “However, if luck is on our side, we might uncover more treasure or even another rare item. Oh wow, the item disappeared right after I added it to my inventory; I hope it registers once we exit the dungeon.”

Felix said with renewed resolve as they pressed onward together into the uncharted depths of The Shadowed Labyrinth, ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.

Felix pressed deeper into The Shadowed Labyrinth, heart racing as the atmosphere thickened with tension. Shadows flickered along the walls, and an ominous silence settled over the space.

“Caroline,” he murmured, scanning their surroundings, “any signs of a boss room?”

“Just up ahead,” she replied. “Get ready. The final boss of this dungeon is usually significantly tougher than the rest.”

As they rounded a corner, a massive stone door loomed before them, intricately carved with images of shadowy figures battling against radiant light. A notification flashed across Felix’s HUD:

  [Final Boss Encounter: Shadow Warden]

The door creaked open slowly, revealing a cavernous chamber bathed in darkness. Flickering torches cast eerie shadows as they illuminated the imposing figure standing at its center—a towering creature cloaked in dark mist, eyes glowing like embers.

“There it is!” Felix shouted. “Stay alert!”

The Shadow Warden turned its gaze toward them, a low growl rumbling from its throat. “Intruders shall not pass,” it boomed.

Felix took a deep breath, raising his Specter .50 as adrenaline surged through him. “We can do this! Just stick to the plan.”

As the battle began, the Warden lunged forward with alarming speed, sending out tendrils of shadow that lashed at Felix and his companions. He activated Blinkstep just in time to evade one of the attacks.

“Watch out for those tendrils!” Caroline shouted as she tracked their movements. “They can incapacitate you!”

Felix repositioned himself and aimed carefully, firing precise shots at the creature’s core. Each hit resonated with energy but barely scratched the surface of its dark armor.

The Warden retaliated by summoning shadow minions from the darkness—smaller creatures that rushed toward them in waves.

“Focus on those minions!” Felix commanded. He worked in tandem with his companions to dispatch them swiftly while keeping an eye on the Warden’s movements.

After a grueling back-and-forth struggle filled with evasive maneuvers and well-timed shots, Felix felt his resolve strengthen as he pushed himself harder than ever before.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of battling through minion waves and avoiding powerful attacks from the Warden itself, Felix found an opening—an exposed weakness where shadows flickered thinly against light.

“This is it!” he declared fiercely, taking aim once more with all his focus.

A shot rang out—the energy round pierced through the darkness and struck true. The Warden howled in pain as its form disintegrated into swirling mist.

Quest Complete: Defeated The Shadow Warden!

Ding! Level Up! You are now Level 8!

  Stat Gains: +1 STR, +2 DEX, +1 CON, +1 INT, +1 WIS, +1 CHA, +1 LCK.

Felix felt exhilaration surge within him—a wave of accomplishment washing over him like a refreshing tide as he reveled in the victory. Just as he caught his breath, another two notifications materialized before his eyes, glowing with promise:

New Skill Acquired: Shadowmeld – Blend into shadows for stealth and increased evasion for 30 seconds!

Felix couldn’t help but grin, his heart racing as he absorbed the significance of what he’d just accomplished. Alone in this treacherous labyrinth, he had faced insurmountable odds and emerged victorious, his confidence soaring alongside his newfound power.

Felix stood in the aftermath of the Shadow Warden's defeat, the chamber now eerily silent except for the faint echoes of his heartbeat. He surveyed the area, eyes wide with excitement as he rummaged through the remaining shadows.

“Caroline, any loot?” he asked, still buzzing from adrenaline.

A notification flashed before him: [Loot Acquired: Warden's Shadow Cloak]

A cloak imbued with shadow energy. Grants +10 Stealth Rating and allows for one use of Shadowmeld per encounter.

Felix grinned at the sight of his new gear. “Nice! This will come in handy.”

As he headed back to the village, Felix dialed Aric from his friends list.

Aric: Hey, Lix! Did you manage to snag that Guild Token from earlier? Someone mentioned they saw you might have gotten one on your stream. We could find a use for it soon.

Felix paused briefly, weighing whether to keep it for himself since he didn’t have much currency or to share it with the guild. “I just took down a major boss and scored some great loot,” he mumbled to himself before responding.

Felix: Yeah, I got it. What do you need it for?

Aric: We’ve been working on gathering resources for our next guild venture, and having that token could boost our collective stats significantly.

Felix smiled at the prospect but felt a twinge of reluctance. “Maybe later, how much does it cost to buy?” he typed back quickly.

Just then, a shadow darted across his peripheral vision. Felix’s instincts kicked in as he tightened his grip on the Specter .50 and scanned his surroundings.

Out of nowhere, a figure lunged from behind a tree—a player clad in dark armor with a furious expression etched across his face.

“You!” the attacker shouted, rage boiling in his voice. “You killed my friend during that bandit ambush!”

Felix narrowed his eyes as recognition dawned on him; this was one of those players who had fallen during their earlier skirmish. He raised his rifle defensively. “Back off! I did what I had to do!”

The player charged forward without hesitation, drawing a blade that glinted menacingly in the fading light. “You think you can just take my friend away and get away with it? You’ve got a bounty on your head now!”

“A bounty?” Felix shot back incredulously as he sidestepped to evade an incoming strike. The realization sank in—he was now being hunted not only by NPCs but other players as well.

The intensity of the encounter heightened as Felix focused on staying one step ahead while assessing how to turn this around without getting overwhelmed by rage-fueled vengeance from an angry player desperate for retribution.

Felix barely had time to react as the player lunged at him again, blade slicing through the air. He ducked just in time, feeling the rush of wind as the weapon narrowly missed him.

“Get back!” Felix shouted, steadying his rifle with determination. “I don’t want to fight you!”

The other player sneered, relentless in his pursuit. “Too bad! You’re going to pay for what you did!”

With a quick flick of his wrist, Felix activated Blinkstep, vanishing from sight and reappearing behind a nearby tree. The attacker spun around, eyes wide with confusion.

“Where’d you go?” he barked, scanning the area frantically.

Felix seized the moment, raising his rifle again and firing a shot that hit the ground near the player's feet. “I don’t want to kill you! Just let it go!”

The man hesitated for a fraction of a second before rushing toward him again, fury clouding his judgment.

“Enough!” Felix shouted, heart racing. He took aim once more and fired—this time hitting the player's arm and forcing him to drop his weapon.

With a pained shout, the player staggered back, clutching his arm. “You’ll regret this!”

Felix stepped forward cautiously, adrenaline coursing through him. “I didn’t want it to come to this! Just leave me alone.”

The attacker’s eyes narrowed in anger as he gritted his teeth. “You think you can just walk away? This isn’t over!”

Before Felix could respond, the player stumbled back into the shadows and vanished from sight. Breathing heavily, Felix felt a mix of relief and unease wash over him.

He quickly made his way back to Silverleaf Village, where familiar sights greeted him—the warm glow of lanterns flickering against stone walls and NPCs bustling about as they completed their evening routines.

Once inside the village square, he spotted familiar faces among the guards who had been on duty during their previous encounter with bandits.

“You’re back!” one called out cheerfully as he approached. “Everything alright?”

“Just another day in paradise,” Felix replied dryly as he exhaled deeply.

As he reached the innkeeper’s counter to check in for the night, a notification flashed across his HUD:
