Chapter 287: The Fake Kitten

The kitten had agreed to stay, but it still refused to come out from under the cabinet. Its tiny body was curled into a ball, trembling slightly.

Luo Wei sighed, then moved her pillow from the bed to a chair. She crouched down and spoke softly. "If you get tired, you can rest here. I'll go to the kitchen and find you something to eat, okay?"

At the mention of food, the tip of the kitten's tail twitched.

Luo Wei smiled. Greedy little kittens were the easiest to coax. She was confident she could lure it out with a chicken leg!

She picked up the summoning scroll from the floor and placed it on the table. Using her magic wand, she dispelled the sealing rune on the wall, then turned and left the bedroom.

She didn’t close the door behind her. This was a test—to see if the kitten truly wanted to stay or was just pretending so it could escape later.

If it wanted to run... well, she’d let it go.

You can’t force it, Luo Wei told herself.

Chris had gone to the mulberry orchard to find the butler, Bella. The parlor and front courtyard were empty. Only three maids remained in the kitchen, preparing dinner.

The front courtyard was too sparsely staffed during the day. She’d need to assign a manservant to guard the gate and set up a patrol team to protect the house.

Luo Wei mulled this over as she walked into the kitchen.

The maids were washing carrots and peas. When they saw Luo Wei enter, they quickly stood. "Master, be careful—there’s water on the floor. It’s a bit slippery."

"It’s fine." Luo Wei walked steadily and asked, "Are there any cooked chicken legs in the kitchen?"

"Yes, yes! There are roasted chicken legs in the bread oven. I’ll get one for you right away." The maid hurriedly wiped her hands on her apron and turned to grab the bread paddle from the stove.

On the second floor of the main house, a small yellow kitten poked its head out of the bedroom doorway. After confirming no one was around, it stepped out on light paws.

This floor was still unfamiliar. The kitten looked left and right, spotted the staircase, and immediately trotted over on soft paw pads.

It peered down the stairs for a few seconds. Seeing no one below, it relaxed. Its tail swished, and it hopped down one step at a time.

Once it reached the parlor, the kitten felt much more at ease.

Still, the world from this angle was a bit novel. It looked here and there, slowly making its way to the parlor entrance. It glanced outside at the courtyard—not very interesting—then turned its head toward the kitchen.

Its triangular ears twitched. Voices drifted through the air.

For some reason, the kitten grew nervous again. Its big almond eyes filled with hesitation. It lifted its right paw, stretching it toward the doorway but not quite stepping forward.

Especially when it heard familiar footsteps coming from the kitchen, the kitten grew even more anxious. The fine fur on top of its head curled from stress, sticking up in a messy tuft.

Finally, it made up its mind. Its right paw touched the ground, ready to flee—when suddenly, the scent of fragrant roasted chicken wafted to its nose!

The kitten’s pupils dilated. The next second, it yanked its paw back, sat down on the spot, and stayed put. Only its tail kept swishing left and right on the floor.

When Luo Wei returned with the chicken leg, she found a well-behaved little kitten sitting at the door, waiting for her.

  "Meow~"

The kitten looked up and let out a sweet, coquettish meow.

Luo Wei was surprised. Just moments ago, this kitten had been hiding, terrified of humans. But in the time it took her to fetch a chicken leg, it had become affectionate?

She looked down at the kitten. The kitten looked back at her.

After two seconds of eye contact, the kitten’s body went stiff again. Its tail curled anxiously near its hind legs. Its ears flattened into airplane ears, and it looked ready to bolt.

Luo Wei quickly looked away. She was being paranoid. The kitten hadn’t changed—it was just trying hard to overcome its fear and be friendly.

"Come on, let’s go inside and eat, little kitty."

She carried the plate, keeping the kitten in her peripheral vision. When she saw it stand and walk inside, she stepped through the door and set the chicken leg down on the low table.

"Go ahead and eat. There’s more in the kitchen if you want." Luo Wei spoke softly, then went to sit by the window.

The kitten looked at the low table, then sneakily glanced at her.

The moment Luo Wei looked back, it whipped its head around, swishing its tail and pretending to stare at the chicken on the plate.

"Do you want me to put it on the floor?"

Luo Wei thought it couldn’t jump up, so she walked over and set the plate on the ground.

  "Meow~" the kitten called softly.

Strange, Luo Wei thought. The mermaid pearl couldn’t translate that meow. It seemed like a meaningless sound.

She watched the kitten’s behavior. It was drooling with hunger but still wouldn’t take a bite. It kept stealing glances at her.

After a moment, Luo Wei understood. It wasn’t used to being watched while eating.

"Go ahead and eat. I’ll step outside for a bit."

She turned and walked toward the door.

Behind her, the kitten watched her leave. Once her silhouette disappeared around the corner, its shyness eased a little.

It turned back to stare at the fragrant chicken leg on the plate. It licked its tiny fangs, eyes glowing green, and chomped down with a big bite.

  "Mrowww~"

  "Nom nom nom"

By the window, Luo Wei watched the kitten crouched on the floor, devouring its meal with gusto. She couldn’t help but smile. A magic cat didn’t seem all that different from a regular cat!

After finishing the chicken leg, the kitten licked its lips, walked a few steps, stretched out its front legs, lowered its belly, and gave a long, luxurious stretch.

Seeing that Luo Wei still hadn’t returned, it found a chair on its own, jumped up, curled into a ball, and took a nap.

Luo Wei didn’t go in to disturb it. She tiptoed away and headed to the garden, summoning Nicole to help clear out pests from the flowers.

On the chair, the kitten’s ears twitched. It knew someone had been watching it eat. The face hidden under its paws flushed bright red.

The tree shadows slanted. The sunlight blazed.

The Infernal Arachne hopped around the flower beds, catching caterpillars and tossing them into a pile for Luo Wei to incinerate.

Nicole’s pest control was too thorough. Even though it was late spring, there were hardly any butterflies in the garden—just a swarm of bees buzzing around.

The wind blew. The swaying apple tree cast dappled light and shadow. The empty wicker basket under the eaves rocked gently. The messenger raven hadn’t returned yet.

Luo Wei stared at the basket, lost in thought.

At a raven’s flying speed, one night was more than enough time to make a round trip between Siria and Gelu City.

She’d given the deadline as tonight for two reasons. First, she didn’t think Count Wesley would agree to her proposal so quickly. Second, she wasn’t sure if she’d escape Alfried’s schemes today.

She and the Wesley family were both sacrifices in the gods’ battle for faith.

The Sun and Moon Gods were one entity. If the Moon God seized the God of Justice’s authority, the Sun God must have been involved. Would switching the Wesley family’s allegiance to the Sun God really save them?

The war in Gelu City was both a microcosm of the new war of faith and a signal that the age of gods was ending.

In the game background of Chronicles of Galan, there were no gods. In other words, the game would only begin after the gods had fallen, faith had collapsed, and everything related to the gods had become history.

Luo Wei spent most of her time thinking about how to return to her original world. She rarely thought about why she’d transmigrated here in the first place.

Now, she suddenly felt a strong curiosity about that question.

  Why had she transmigrated here?

Out of all the people in the world, why was she the one who came?

Who had made her transmigrate, and what was the purpose of bringing her here?
