Arisa was performing on an actual stage this time, with over two hundred people gathered to watch.
As before, her voice seemed to have an almost supernatural charm effect, as people who were just passing by slowed down and joined the crowd.
Chisato, Takina, Tamamo and Hitomi were watching from backstage, searching for anything suspect. Things were normal for most of Arisa's performance, until someone hiding their face under a grey hooded robe joined the crowd.
The girls had spotted them, as they were the only person hiding their face.
"This is Shutaura Sequenzia." said Takina. "I don't know what she's doing here."
"Checking that we are doing our job, maybe?" guessed Hitomi.
"I'll go talk to her."
Takina jumped down from the elevated ptform and headed toward Shutaura. The girl noticed her coming, gestured to the side, and walked away from the crowd.
Takina followed her as she opened a maintenance door, and Takina followed into the dimly lit corridor. The sounds of the concert were muffled, and they could talk with ease.
"I have confirmed the information you gave me." said Shutaura without preamble. "When did you meet the chairman? Who is he?"
"The Chairman knows a lot about what is happening in the city." shrugged Takina. "He contacted us from his own initiative and led us to a neutral ground to meet him. As for his identity, sorry, by I don't think he would want me to tell you."
"Tche." sighed Shutaura. She hadn't really expected an answer anyway.
"Have you seen any more signs of those Espers?"
"No. Although, you are incorrect when you call them Espers. They are magicians."
"Isn't that the same thing? Magicians are Espers inside a yer of superstition and folklore." frowned Shutaura.
"You are wrong, actually. Although Magicians are careful to maintain secrecy about their existence, so I understand your logic."
"Espers are people who use their ability to directly influence their surroundings. As if their will could distort reality. Magicians, on the other hand, are people who use various tools, rituals and techniques to create supernatural phenomena."
"As a result, Magicians tend to be slower to deploy their abilities, and their abilities will be impaired if they do not have access to their tools. But on the other hand, they are more polyvalent than Espers. The Fire user you fought a few days ago, as an example, could likely use more than just fire."
"And what makes you think the attackers were Magicians?"
"Because I am more a Magician than an Esper myself. Don't worry, the Chairman knows, and he's not worried we are a threat. This aside, what are you doing here? If your goal is to protect Arisa, why are you wearing this robe, and your skin suit underneath? You don't exactly blend with the crowd, wearing that."
"I am not on duty right now."
"Oh, so you're here to listen to Arisa's songs." smiled Takina.
"…No." sighed Shutaura. "Ever since the accident, I can't hear music. It is just meaningless, distracting noise to me."
"…I see. Give me your hand, Shutaura." said Takin, extending her own.
"Why?"
"I said I was a magician. One of my magic abilities is healing. I do not want to boast, but I can heal te-stage cancer or even inherited genetic disorders."
"Are there secondary effects to your healing method?" suspiciously asked Shutaura.
"None. It's not painful either." smiled Takina.
Shutaura hesitated, not believing Takina, but she had nothing to lose. She took Takina's hand, who became surrounded by a green glow.
"…That's strange." frowned Takina. "I expected to find damage to your eardrums or your nerves, but I do not see any issue with them. Your brain seems fine as well, no tumor of anything obvious… but there is something. It feels like a small part of your brain is…numb. The neurons aren't firing off signals properly. Let me try something.
Without releasing Shutaura's hand, Takina opened the nearby door, allowing the music to be clearly heard.
Shutaura winced as what felt to her like loud white noise assaulted her ears. Takina nodded and focused her Greater Healing on the part of the brain she was observing. it didn't work, so she tried Purge next.
Suddenly, the white noise became a song, and Shutaura flinched.
"…Is it better?" asked Takina.
"…How did you do it?"
"That's the surprising thing." shrugged Takina. "What was interfering with your ability to recognize music wasn't a disease or an injury. It was a magic curse."
"What?"
"Don't ask me for expnations. I have no way to know more about it. It feels too weird and specific a curse to be an attack. Most likely, you were at the wrong pce, at the wrong time, and became involved in some kind of magic. Unless maybe you offended a musician who was secretly a Magician, and they decided to curse you?"
"…I don't remember ever offending a magician, or anything really out of the ordinary." frowned Shutaura. "This happened just after the accident three years ago…"
"What accident?" asked Takina.
"The 'Miracle' of 88." bitterly said Shutaura. She absolutely hated that word.
"I never heard about it, sorry."
"…Three years ago, the spacepne Orion had a serious issue. Its left engine was on fire, and it had yet to re-enter the atmosphere. My father was the pilot, and I was one of the passengers. It seemed we had no chance to survive. But somehow, my father managed to let us survive the re-entry, and even nded the pne. Everyone survived, except for him."
"I'm sorry to hear that. You have my condolences." softly said Takina.
"Thank you. It was just after this emergency nding that the space elevator's construction started, just in front of the field where we nded."
"They built a space elevator in only three years? That's hard to believe." said Takina.
"They did. Anyway, thank you for… removing the curse. I am in your debt."
"Don't mind… actually, I have a favor to ask you."
"What is it?"
"The Chairman gave us two missions. The first is to protect Arisa, and the second is to help someone who has been cursed with immortality, and who wishes to die. But the Chairman didn't give us her identity. All we know is that she looks like a child. We need to find her, and we'd appreciate your help."
Shutaura frowned, as she could immediately think of a little girl who was surprisingly mature and yielded a lot of economic and financial power. Her own superior, Ladylee Tangleroad. The one whose company had built the space elevator.
"I'll ask around." nodded Shutaura.
"Thank you. We're going to eat lunch at a nearby restaurant once the concert is over. Do you wish to join us?"
Shutaura's first reflex was to decline, but when she thought about it, it was an opportunity for her to find out more about Takina and her friends, and about magic.
"I accept your invitation, thank you."
…
"…And I'll take carbonara pasta, thank you." smiled Chisato, and the waiter, having collected their orders, nodded and left.
Chisato, Takina, Hitomi, Tamamo, Arisa and Shutaura had taken a table outside and were enjoying the sunny weather.
"Arisa, did something happen during your performance?" asked Chisato with concern.
"I… I don't know what happened." confessed Arisa, blushing as she lowered her head.
"Did I miss something?" blinked Takina.
"Yes. When you were away chatting with Shutaura, Arisa's voice… I'm not sure how to expin it. She still sang beautifully, but it was like her song was less charming, in a subtle way. Less people were stopping to listen."
"…Now that you point it out, I didn't feel quite the same appeal when we returned. Please don't get me wrong, Arisa, you're a great singer, and I love your songs."
"Yes. I felt something strange while I sang, and after that, it was like I couldn't completely get in the zone, if you understand what I mean."
"Well, we all have our bad days, and if this was one of them, it was still pretty damn good." shrugged Hitomi.
"Thank you, Hitomi." smiled Arisa.
"Yes, I like your songs, too. Setting this matter aside, how does magic work, exactly?" asked Shutaura. "Takina, you said it required tools or rituals, but when you removed that curse from me, you didn't seem to use anything."
"What I described to you was how Magicians who started as normal humans and were taught magic do it. Although those tools and rituals are not always physical objects. Sometimes, they can just be a word sequence, or the ritual may be performed mentally. I don't know for sure, because it is different for us."
"Different? How?"
"Well, to take my case as an example, I received it after I swore eternal loyalty to the Champion of the Goddess Lilith. She made him a Demi-God, and he, in turn, shared some of his powers with me. I can use them just as easily as Esper powers, or more easily, in many cases, since I do not need to make complicated mental calcutions like most Espers do."
"A Goddess?" excimed Arisa, excited by the prospect.
"Yes." smiled Chisato. "From what Lilith told us, there are three primordial Gods, the great beings who created the physical rules ws time and gravity. And they elevated thousands of mortals to become Lesser Gods, like the god of the Bible, or Lilith. I was serving Susanoo's Champion until something happened, and we both decided that I would go over to Lilith's faction, as repayment for a rge favor."
They knew that Aleister was likely listening, but after hearing about his goal, they didn't believe he would try to interfere with them.
"If gods and goddesses exist, can we talk to them by praying?" asked Arisa.
"Yes and no. The gods have a rule not to interfere with a world that has been created by another. Yes, there are many worlds that exist in parallel timelines. And as far as we know, yours had been created by one or several of the seven following deities. Lilith, Athena, Susanoo, Loki, Ogun, Artemis, and Hestia."
"If you pray to one of them, you have a small chance that they'll hear you, and a smaller chance still that they'll answer. If you pray to the god of the bible, the odds he'll hear are near zero, and he won't to anything even if he does, because that would be vioting their non-interference rule."
"There's a caveat to what Chisato just said." shrugged Takina. "Quite often, when the Gods create new worlds, they also create local, immortal beings that the mortal living there will call gods. Often replicas of existing Lesser Gods. It's not impossible that the being revered by the catholic church exists somewhere in this timeline, but his power is not anywhere comparable to the actual divinities who created the world."
"It's starting to become complicated." said Arisa.
"I'll summarize." smiled Hitomi. "There are basically five categories in the divine hierarchy, from strongest to weakest. Primordial Gods, Lesser Gods, Local Gods, Champions that are Demi-Gods and serve the Lesser Gods. Finally, the Champion's servants who are Quarter-gods or Quarter-Goddesses. Champions aren't necessarily weaker than Local Gods, and Takina is a Quarter-Goddess. Chisato, Tamamo and I are candidates to become Quarter-Goddesses as well. There's just some training and a ritual we need to do, to gain that status and the abilities shared between the Champion and their subordinates. Are you perhaps interested? There are some great perks to go with the position."
"Are you asking us to become a God's servant?" asked Shutaura, her eyes squinted.
"Servants of Lilith, to be accurate. That's the faction we belong to." nodded Takina. "She sends us to worlds who need some help, we solve the issue that threatens the local poputions, and then move on to the next. After a few years, Noah, our Champion, will semi-retire. Instead of being sent to new worlds, he will oversee those he already explored, making sure no horrible stuff like wars or pandemics or tyrants appear. And we will help him."
"It's basically what you are doing piloting your machine, Shutaura, but on a scale of several worlds, instead of just a city. It may seem overwhelming, but we received many abilities to help, like dealing with injuries and curses, and there are thousands of us to share the workload." said Chisato. "And…"
Her words trailed off as she looked past Takina's shoulder. Takina turned to follow her gaze and saw three people walking closer, staring straight at them.
The one leading them was a young man with short spiky blond hair, wearing thin sungsses. He wore a green and white Hawaiian shirt, unbuttoned to reveal part of his chest, and bck pants.
The second was a young man with semi-long red hair, wearing a dark outfit. He was smoking, something rare and frowned upon in Academy City. He seemed to exude gloominess.
The st one was a beautiful young woman with long bck hair styled in a ponytail by a white ribbon and dark purple eyes. She wore blue jeans with the left leg cut off, a white t-shirt tied at the waist revealing her navel, and a short blue jacket with a missing right sleeve.
And she had a long odachi strapped on her back.
Weapons weren't allowed in Academy City, except for organizations like Anti-Skill, but none of the civilians nearby seemed to notice.
"Hi there!" cheerfully waved the blonde guy. "Do you mind if we join you for a few minutes?"
"Hi! You must be the magicians from the Anglican Church." grinned Chisato. "Sure, as long as it's only to talk. Or maybe share a meal?"
"Thanks." said the blonde guy, moving a table closer. As they sat down, he introduced himself.
"I am Motoharu Tsuchimikado. It's nice to meet you! My friends are Stiyl Magnus, and Kaori Kanzaki." Stiyl and Kaori nodded in greeting. "I'm surprised that you already know our affiliation. It should be our first meeting. Did those girls tell you?"
Tsuchimikado was referring to the three magician girls. Chisato and Takina finally had decided to just let them go.
"No. We already had a description of Kaori, the sword saint." smiled Chisato.
"Me?" asked Kaori, surprised.
"Yes." grinned Chisato. "The person we work for knows about your fighting style, your magic name, even your personality. He approves of you. And now that I see you in person, I can see why he said you were beautiful."
"Hum… thanks." muttered Kaori, slightly embarrassed. She was unused to being praised over her appearance.
A waiter came, and the three of them ordered coffee.
"What did you do to my disciples?" asked Stiyl after the waiter left, anger coloring his voice.
"Are you the one who summoned that fire giant the other day?" asked Takina, and Stiyl nodded. Shutaura stared at him warily. She hadn't seen the summoner back then.
"Did they tell you what we did to them?" continued Takina.
"No. What you did seems to have traumatized them. They just shiver whenever I try to get them to tell me."
"Good. We didn't actually do anything serious to them. But we did warn them that if they peeped a word about what they saw, they would get it. Apparently, they took the warning seriously. Stop asking them, and they'll be just fine." shrugged Takina. "So, why are you guys targeting Arisa?"
"She will start a war between the magical and the scientific world." sighed Tsuchimikado, looking at Arisa with sympathy.
"What? But that's ridiculous!" excimed Arisa, shocked. "There's no way I would want to harm people."
"We never said that you would do it willingly. You will start one just by being who you are."
"…I do not understand." said Arisa, confused.
"The issue is that you are a Saint, quite possibly to a greater extent than Kaori is. And some people want to use you to trigger a catastrophe."
"A Saint?"
"Arisa, you were one of the 88 survivors of the Orion's emergency nding three years ago, right?" gently asked Tsuchimikado.
Shutaura looked sharply at Arisa, as she wasn't aware of that.
"Yes? What does it have to do with anything?"
"Do you have any memories of your life before?"
"No." sighed Arisa. "I got affected by amnesia, and I never recovered any memory of my past."
"Well, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but 88 people entered that spacepne before it took off, crew included."
"That's impossible!" blurted out Shutaura. "I was in that spacepne too, and my father was the pilot! And he…"
Shutaura stopped speaking. She couldn't continue, her voice choking out.
"He passed away, yes. You have our condolences, miss Sequenzia. There should have been 87 survivors, and one victim. And yet, after the spacepne nded, there were 88 survivors and one victim… Back then, when the engine caught fire, you must have prayed very hard for salvation, right?"
Shutaura nodded as she cleared her throat. "…Yes, of course. We all were, I guess."
"Yes. So did all the other passengers and crew members, I am sure. And in answer to those prayers, a miracle happened. You were saved, aside from your father, and the miracle also took human form. Miss Meigo. We checked the passenger list. She wasn't on it."
"That's..." Arisa opened and closed her mouth, unable to get a word out.
Shutaura stared at her in astonishment… and a bit of hostility.
"We got a copy of the recording made by the bck box." sighed Tsuchimikado. "While the Orion was making its re-entry into the atmosphere, the audio recording showed the passengers falling silent, and someone hummed a song. It was your voice, miss Meigo. You instinctively used your power in the form of a song, and stopped the pne from disintegrating before it could nd."
He stopped speaking as the waiters returned with the orders.
"…Okay." sighed Chisato, gently squeezing Arisa's shoulder in support. "I can tell that you believe what you just said to be true, at least. But was about the war part? Are you suggesting that both the Scientific and Magical sides will fight to get their hands on Arisa?"
"No. It's far worse." sighed Kaori, gncing to the side at the space elevator.
"This thing up there has a very specific design. It doubles as a space elevator, yes. But its true purpose is for the space station connected to it to serve as a giant magic formation."
"For what purpose?" asked Hitomi.
"Ladylee Tangleroad is from our side." said Kaori. "She was originally a Greek Sybil specialized in astrology, and she got cursed by immortality. She founded the company that created the space elevator, and her goal is to pce miss Meigo in the center of the formation and use her as the core for her spell."
"Arisa, didn't you say that your debut concert is supposed to happen in the space station?" asked Hitomi, and Arisa paled.
"And let me guess." sighed Takina. "That giant spell of hers is this Ladylee's attempt to end herself, and it is going to kill a whole lot of people, probably all of Japan and more."
"Yes. Have you heard of it?"
"The Chairman of Academy City's Board of Directors asked us to do something about it, yes. He knows what this Ladylee is trying to do, and he's not a fan, understandably." shrugged Takina.
"Just a few runes to suppress her immortality, and we'll give her what she wants without half the world blowing up. We'll deal with it after the meal. Wanna come to witness it?" winked Chisato.
"I'll go with you. I want to face that person." decided Arisa, and Chisato nodded.
"Just a few runes, you say?" asked Tsuchimikado. "If it were that easy, she would have found a way to kill herself already.
Chisato looked at Takina, who shrugged, created a bnk cardboard card, and engraved a Stop rune on it. She extended it to Tsuchimikado.
"Try to use your magic while touching this rune, and you will see."
Tsuchimikado dubiously touched the rune, and his eyes widened as he tried to use a minor sonic spell, and completely failed. He passed the card to Stiyl and Kaori, who also experimented with it.
"I'll go with you." decided Kaori. "If you let Miss Meigo meet that woman, I cannot trust you completely with her safety. I hope you understand."
Chisato and Takina nodded.
"Direct confrontation isn't my thing, so I'll pass, but thank you for offering." said Tsuchimikado.
"I'll go as well." shrugged Stiyl.
…
With two strong magicians as reinforcement, the group sat on the high-speed shuttle, that used electromagnetic rails to reach speeds nearly impossible at ground level. The ascension had been slow at first, but as they climbed, the air pressure became less and less. Five hundred kilometers above ground, the shuttle was in a near vacuum, and picked up speed until it reached over five thousands kilometers per hour.
Accessing the elevator had been easy. They simply walked to the guards and got them to report to their superiors about Arisa Meigo being there, and after a few minutes, the guards had allowed them inside.
It wasn't Shutaura's first time using the space elevator, but she spent most of the time in brooding silence. After listening to the Magicians' shocking expnations, she had remembered a distant memory. When she had prayed during the incident, when she had pleaded for salvation, she had offered to sacrifice was she considered her most precious thing in exchange.
And she had loved to sing, before the accident. Before she lost her ability to appreciate music.
She gnced at Arisa, who seemed to be equally troubled.
Part of her wanted to shake that girl and demand answers. If she was the miracle they had prayed for, why did her father have to die?
But she didn't. She knew she wouldn't get an answer from her, and that whatever had happened wasn't a deliberate choice of her part.
The others were discussing and expanding on what they had been discussing before the three Magicians came, and Chisato was speaking in detail about her few interactions with the seven deities. Tamamo even revealed herself to be a summoned variant of Tamamo-no-Mae, the legendary fox spirit. She had let her tail and hairs out and let her hair return to its natural color, and Kaori was blushing as Tamamo let her touch her tail.
Shutaura blushed, too, as she felt an urge to touch it as well and experience its fluffiness.
When they got close to their destination, the passengers strapped themselves to their seats, and the deceleration started. They would have been sent to the ceiling if not for the seatbelts.
The shuttle eventually reached the station, and Tamamo hid her ears and tail again.
The door opened. Three people were waiting for them. Front and center was a little girl in an old-fashioned red dress, her long hair styled into twin tails. The man and woman behind them were obvious bodyguards.
"Welcome to Endymion, everyone." smiled the girl.
"Thanks." shrugged Chisato. She quickly introduced her companions, without revealing Stiyl's and Kaori's affiliations.
The expression on Ladylee's face when she heard Kaori's name was stiff. She apparently had heard of the Saint.
Chisato wondered why someone who wished to die would be wary of anyone, but shrugged.
"Let's get straight to the point, miss Ladylee. We know you want to die, and that this whole space elevator and Arisa are part of your next attempt. But you don't need them. We already have the means to kill you."
Ladylee snorted contemptuously.
"You think I haven't tried? I even threw myself into a volcano, but my low weight made me float back to the surface, and the water of my body caused a steam explosion. The volcano spit me back!"
"I killed Accelerator by neutralizing his ability." shrugged Takina. "All I have to do it neutralize your immortality using the same method."
Ladylee's eyes narrowed for a few seconds, then she looked up at Takina.
"Can you… really do it?" said Ladylee with a hopeful voice.
"I can. But before I proceed, I want to offer you an alternative. What if you could live among thousands of other immortals? You would never be lonely again. You would never see the people close to you grow old and die. Isn't that a better option?"
"…No. If you really can kill me, please do. If not, I will continue with my pn." said Ladylee, gncing at Arisa.
"I am confident." shrugged Takina. She wouldn't feel much regret killing the monster in front of her. She had been cursed by immortality, yes. But she was also willing to kill countless people to get her way.
Ladylee turned to her two bodyguards and asked them to leave the dock, and Takina created a steel colr, with over a dozen Stop runes engraved in it.
"Put it on, please. The runes will suppress your immortality when you wear it."
Ladylee examined the runes curiously, not recognizing them, then shrugged and closed it around her neck. The colr locked itself with a click.
"Any st word? A pce where you would like to be buried?" asked Takina, manifesting a sword of compressed light.
"Thank you, I guess? My associates will dispose of the body."
Takina nodded, and drove the sword into Ladylee's heart. Despite the pain, Ladylee smiled as she colpsed.
Arisa turned her gaze away, feeling nauseous.
Takina waited for a minute to confirm that Ladylee's wound wasn't healing, then wrote a note and stuck it on Ladylee's dress where it would easily be found.
"Do not remove the colr, or her immortality might kick in again."
"There. We saved the world with minimal casualties, and Arisa wouldn't need an escort anymore. Unless the magic side intends to use her?" asked Takina.
"No." replied Kaori. "Where she wishes to go is her freedom. We will welcome her in the Anglican Church if she asks, but we will not kidnap her."
Arisa nodded, and they returned to the shuttle.
There were no controls, but someone's voice came from the speakers and asked them to secure their seatbelts. It seemed like there were cameras being used somewhere after all.
The Shuttle started its downward travel, and Chisato turned to Shutaura.
"What are you going to do now that your boss is dead? How about you join us and help save other worlds?"
"…I'll think about it." said Shutaura. She only had a few distant friends, her mother had died when she was too young to remember her, and she had no siblings. Freshly orphaned after the incident, Ladylee had found her and put her under her wing, but their retionship hod only been one of boss and subordinate. There wasn't really anything keeping her here.
And the idea of visiting other worlds, and doing some good, was intriguing.
"I want to join you." said Arisa. "I have no family or close friends here, and helping other people is something I want to do almost as much as I want to sing."
Chisato nodded with a smile, and looked at Kaori next.
Kaori didn't fully trust them. But she had devoted her life to saving people, persevering despite many setbacks, many people she failed to save, and it seemed like serving this Lilith would be the best way to do it.
"…I'll observe you more before I decide if I want to join. How much time do you still have before you move to the next world, now that you have saved this one?"
"Oh, we haven't saved it yet." smiled Chisato.
"What?" excimed Stiyl and Kaori simultaneously.
"We just solved one crisis. Before it, we saved ten thousand people from a terrible experiment and stopped an evil scientist from gaining the ability to brainwash all of Academy City. The Chairman will give us the location of that scientist as payment for ending Ladylee's issue and protecting Arisa."
"Once we deal with him, next should be an attack on Academy City by the roman catholic church. The so-called 'God's Right Seat' organization. And then, the major crisis we came for in the first pce. If we fail to stop that one, the world will be doomed. Only then can we return home take a break before taking on the next timeline in trouble."
"What kind of crisis?" demanded kaori.
"We'll tell you more when the time comes, if you want to participate." grinned Chisato.
"Of course I do." sighed Kaori, her understanding of Chisato telling her that pressing the matter would be useless, at least for now. She instead thought about the Romane Catholic Church.
There were three branches of the Catholic Church, and each branch had a subordinate organization.
The Anglican Church had Necessarius, or Necessary Evil, who specialized in dealing with hostile magicians.
Stiyl and herself belonged to Necessarius.
The Roman Catholic Church, by far the rgest of the three with almost two billion worshippers, had the God's Right Seat, originally supposed to advise and guide the pope on decisions reted to the supernatural. However, in recent years, the four magicians of God's Right Seat had gained more power than the pope himself, and they were the ones calling the shots.
Kaori had heard many rumors about them, and the only description that would come to her mind when thinking about them was 'crazy fanatics'.
Finally, the Orthodox Catholic Church was based in Russia. Their sub-organization, Annihitus, hunted down ghosts and malevolent spirits.
She wouldn't put it past God's Right Seat to do something as stupid as attacking Academy City. Kaori knew that there were hidden defenses, beyond the obvious Espers and civilian organizations like Anti-Skill.
"Do you expect the Roman Church to attack immediately?"
"No." said Takina as she shook her head. Lilith-sama asked us to defend the city against their attack, but as far as we know, that could be tomorrow, or in three months.
"I see. I will leave tomorrow to report to the Archbishop. I will return to Academy City soon after. Maybe I can dissuade those guys."
"Thank you for your help, Kaori." grinned Chisato.
Takina watched Kaori with a smile. It was obvious to her that she didn't trust them fully yet. To expect the contrary would be unreasonable. But she had agreed to spend time with them in Academy City and cooperate to deal with the Roman Church and the Demonic Pilr. Takina was confident that with the help of her companion, they would win her over. It would only be a matter of time.
