CHAPTER 25) Onward to MONTOX

An hour has passed since the demonstration of that small makeshift arena Tommy has built himself against those undead, and still, everyone is shaken up from the relentless gore they witnessed. Even a young kid was aggressively vicious just as the infected adults were. They all returned to the small home Tommy has built himself. Some soldiers stand by themselves pondering. Others stayed in their little clicks of their unit. Rebecca sat on one of the air hockey tables in the arcade room across from Tommy's place. She leans forward with a cigarette in her mouth as she has her hand resting on her forehead. Nakoma leans against the doorway of the arcade as Ellis stands next to Nakoma, acting as her personal guard.

Nakoma looks to Tommy's place as he sits on an old stitched up bean bag chair playing on an old game console. Few other soldiers from Rebeccas crew stand or sit watching him play his game out of boredom. The game was very ironic since you play games to escape reality, but the game Tommy was playing was a zombie game. A four person cooperative shooter that made you survive against hordes of zombies trying to go from point A to point B. To no one's surprise, his weapon choice in game was an axe. The others watched in amusement as he sliced and bashed his way through the relentless hordes of zombies. Nakoma had enough of hearing the screams of the videogame zombies and went up to him to ask a question.

"Excuse me, Tommy, do you have a moment?"

"Hmph? Sure, what's up?", He says without looking away from the television screen.

"Do you have any extra set of clothes so I can change out of these ones?"

"No I don't. There was a clothes store around the corner here some guy was selling. You could find something there if there is still anything."

Nakoma made a disgruntled moan before walking away, " Ugh, okay, thanks."

"Happy to help.", As he said still refusing to look away from his video game.

Nakoma and Ellis both went to the clothing shop that was supposedly just around the corner of this section of the mall. They spotted it as soon as they turned around the corner. It was inside a small department store that was also a pre-war clothing store. It had a very punk style aesthetic to the place. To her luck, all the clothes were left behind though some were on the floor during the mass panic. She carefully looked through all the ones still on the tables and racks before even touching the ones on the floor. She was halfway through when a pair of clothing caught her eye. It was a very familiar brown pattern that she remembered wearing just before all this crazy mess she got entangled in. She quickly grabbed it and grabbed the pair of boots that looked comfortable enough then those old dress shoes of the disguise she was wearing. She quickly walked out and headed to the nearest restroom. Before she could walk in, she turned around and ask Ellis a quick favor.

"Ellis? Would you mind standing guard at the doorway while I change out of this really quickly."

"I would be happy too. Don't worry you're safe, I promise."

He smiled and stood in the middle of the doorway as Nakoma entered the restroom. That remark Tommy made about restrooms having only one exit stuck with her and made her feel a bit anxious. She set the pair of new clothes on top of the ceramic sink as she began to remove her clothing piece by piece. Before removing her pants, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the bracelet that was given to her before leaving her home. She looks at the small emblem black disk as she rubbed her finger across it, feeling its texture. She looked up trying to stop herself from shedding tears. She looked at the sink and slowly reach down to turn the knob. To her surprise, the water was working still. She bends over and cupped her hands together under the running water as she gently washes her face. She stands up finishing her wash as her hands slowly glide down from her face. The icy cold water dripped down as she stared into the mirror looking back at herself. She stares for what felt like an eternity. It's as if she almost doesn't recognize who she was seeing in the mirror. A total complete stranger.

She comes out of the restroom feeling slightly refreshed. Ellis looks at her and gives her a comforting smile. She smiles back and thanks him for guarding. They slowly walk back to where everyone else was. Nakoma found a trash bin on the way back and tossed her disguised away. They arrived back and it seems nothing has changed; they all were in the same place as they were before. Nakoma sighed in exhaustion as she leaned against the wall now trying to figure out their next plan. Suddenly a loud bang echoed through the entire mall. Everyone jumped up from where they were standing and readied their weapons all except Tommy who was still playing away on his game. Rebecca had her pistol ready as was fed up with how calm he was and rushed towards Tommy in an angry huff.

"Why the fuck are you still sitting down? Did you not hear that?"

"Relax kid, I know what it is. Don't get your bun in a knot."

"I am not a fucking kid asshole!"

He ignores her anger as he hops off his bean bag couch and racks the shotgun that was sitting beside him. He walks out towards the sound as the rest followed behind him. The echo of mall music softly playing above them as no more noise can be heard. After a while they began to hear gurgling and dry heaving in the distance. Demonic sounds of growling and coughing can be heard as they readied their weapons while Tommy still has his shotgun over his shoulder. They are in another part of the mall entrance as a lone infected stands there, twitching in place. Everyone has their guns ready but still shaken, even Rebecca had a slight shake as she aimed her weapon. Tommy scoffed as he bumps his shotgun off his shoulder as it landed into his hand. He aims at the infected person from the hip. He whistles loudly to get the infected persons attention.

The whistle echoes loudly as the undead figure twitches and straightens up. He snapped his head to the sound of the whistle as he turned around slowly. His lower left jaw was missing as a piece of his tongue just freely dangles, only being held by a few small bands of connective tissue. His left arm missing as only a chunk of his forearm dangles from a tendon. It's eyes blood shot red nearly bursting out of his head as an oozing yellow puss seeps out from the corners of its eyes. All of them were struck with fear down to their core all except for Tommy who was enjoying every minute of this.

The infected kept hyperventilating until it finally yelled its demonic gurgling screeched into the air and began to sprint at them. They all were frightened in place seeing the disfigured face charge toward them until they were snapped out of it by the ungodly loud sound of the shotgun being fired from the hip into the infected persons chest. The infected was flown backwards as it slid across the cracked tiles. Tommy chuckled sinisterly as he watched the corpse flew back. It than began to twitch and screech as it propped itself back up and charged again. Another loud blast from the shotgun was fired off as it hit it on the left side of its stomach. It stumbled back as it grabbed it with its only intact right arm. It buried its hand deep into the wound confused on what hit it. The rotting face snapped its head back up as it yelled loudly at them. Almost as if all the damned souls of hell were exiting out of its body. Tommy raised his shotgun and aimed properly at the infected and pulled the trigger one final time.

The mall echoed again as the screeching infected was finally silenced. Its head exploded into nothing but goop as it fell backwards. Tommy yelled with enthusiasm as he racked another shell.

"Oh! Fuck! Did you see that! Fuckers head exploded like a damn melon! Holy shit that was awesome HAHAHAA!"

He tossed his shotgun to one of Rebeccas soldiers as he quickly caught it. Tommy squatted down and stared, admiring the damaged he did to this infected person. He quickly jumped up and began to drag the disfigured corpse.

"What the hell are you doing?"

  As Nakoma scolded at him.

"Isn't it obvious? I got to get rid of this thing. So I'm throwing this fuckers body off the roof hahahaha! Wanna watch this bastards body explode on the concrete?"

They all looked at him in disgust. Even Nakoma and Ellis were sickened by it. The smell was even worse as they got close to them. Tommy chuckled at their green weak stomachs.

"You'll get used to it, don't go puking on me now hehehe."

Rebecca was now at her limits and snapped at him.

"That's it, I can't take this anymore. I'm not spending another minute in this godforsaken mall waiting to die. Everyone get ready, were leaving to the Montox site. NOW!"
