Elemental – Chapter 5 – Mystery

Dr. Arlen goes into his patients room, checking the monitor sitting next to the bed. He takes the young patients wrist and checks on his pulse. Slow and steady, the sedatives were working. Shaking his head, he’s still boggled at how he came to this state.

The officer at the scene said that the driver of the car saw him running and screaming out of an alley and ran right into him, like he didn’t even see the car. He was covered in rotten garbage too. Then there was the other two. They were covered in garbage as well, and no less frightened. But of what?

The doctor leaves to check in on his other two patients. Both had to be sedated to keep them from going hysterical and hurting themselves. As he walks down the hallway, he spots one of the nurses talking with a couple men in bck suits. The suit guys looked dead serious, not good. The nurse points to the doctor. Great.

“Dr. Arlen?” The slightly taller of the two asks as him and his partner walk toward him. “We’d like to ask you a few questions.”

“Sure. My office is over here.” It was te and he really didn’t want to be bothered with whatever it is that they want, but guess it’s better to get it over with.

He leads them to his office and has them sit down in front of his office. He takes his seat behind his deck. “What can I do for you?” He asks them.

“You recently had three young middle school students admitted, correct?” The taller starts.

  “Yes I have.”

“What is there condition?” The shorter one asks.

“First I’d like to see some identification first.”

The two men reach into their suit pockets and each pull out a leather case. The flip them open and reveal FBI identification. The doctor looks at them. Agent Kenin and Maverick. When satisfied, he nods. Though he’s still uncertain about their motives. He also knows about patient confidentiality, though he doubts they care and would make life difficult if the doctor didn't give them something.

Dr. Arlen picks up a couple folders on his desk and ys them all out so he can see them all. “Mike Oswald is the worse one of them all. He’s suffered a concussion, three fractured ribs and a broken leg. Daniel Mitchelson and Rex Jolson both suffer from a severe case of schizophrenia. Mr. Jolson also has an infection on his right arm due to a cut.”

“Any idea how this happened?” Shorty Kenin asks.

“No clue. All the police said was that Mr. Oswald was seen running frantically out of an alley way when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. The other two were found whimpering in a garbage dumpster. Any other information, the police will have.”

“So there was no weird occurrences before hand?” Agent Maverick asks.

“I have no clue. Like I said, you’d have to ask the police.”

“Did they suffer anything resembling a bck eye or anything that could be caused by a fist or simir object?” Kenin asks.

That question made the doctor think. There was no blunt trauma like that. Just a few bumps on their body. Elbows, knees, hips. “No, none that I seen on any of them.”

“May we see them?” Maverick asks.

The doctor looks at both of them. “You’ll understand if I’m skeptical. I’ve already given you more information then a doctor ever should without their parents consent. Or their own consent.”

“We understand. But due to the nature of this circumstance, we must ask to see the children. To try and help understand this situation.”

The doctor huffs then has them both follow him out of his office and down the hall to the first patient, Daniel Mitchelson. He was sleeping. The doctor insisnts they look on from the door, no further.

The Agents look him over then ask to see the others. Dr. Arlen was starting to get concerned about the whole situation.

He leads them out and to the next room with Mr. Oswald. The monitor showing his heart rate silently showing the rhythm of his pulse. His leg suspended in a cast and his head bandaged. His covered ribs hidden under his gown. Again the Agents give him a once over from the door then they move on.

At the st room of the trio, they come to Rex Jolson’s room. The Agents seem to take an interest in him.

“We need to wake him up.” Maverick tells the doctor.

“I would advise against that. He was quite hysterical when they brought him in.”

“That is no matter, we need to wake him.”

The doctor was really getting irritated. He goes over and shuts the door to the room. “Listen, I need to know why you are so interested in him, or any of these kids for that matter.”

The Agents look at each other as if silently asking each other something.

“We recently were tipped off that a certain…entity was here in Tailorton. An entity that may be of some…detriment to the people of the town.”

“Entity?” The doctor says, completely confused.

“A ‘person’ with exceptional gifts. This person or…people, are of interest to us and our superiors. We need to confirm that these are the ones we are looking for.”

The doctor was mind boggled. Entity? People with gifts? What the hell was going on? It was te and he was tired. If it was noon he might have put up a bigger fight. But under the circumstances he was wanting a few answers as well.

“All right. But I’ll need you two to help me hold him down when I wake him. He‘s strapped down but still…”

The doctor leaves and retrieves a new intravenous, one without sedative. But takes a bottle of sedative and a syringe in case he’s too far gone.

The Agents take position. Maverick at Rex’s feet and Kenin up at his arms. Dr. Arlen gives Rex small shot of adrenaline. Slowly he begins to stir.

A moment ter, Rex is wide awake and slowly starts screaming. The Agents hold him tight as Rex tries his best to thrash and get away. The bed bouncing a jostling from the force of Rex’s tirade.

“Rex! Rex! It’s okay!” the doctor yells over Rex’s screaming. “You’re safe now! Rex, calm down!” The doctor takes his face and forces Rex to look at him.

After a few moments, Rex calms down enough for the Agents to let him go. They compose themselves, straightening their suits as they do.

“Rex, I’m Dr. Arlen. Okay?” The doctor calms his voice.

Rex slowly starts crying, his breathing was still fast and erratic.

“Rex. These men are here to listen to you. They want to know what happened.”

Rex looks over to them, his face still one of fright. His mouth twitches for a few seconds.

  “The wind.” Rex whispers.

The doctor wasn’t sure he heard right. “What was that Rex?”

“The wind!” Rex goes into another fit of thrashing, all the while crying, ‘the wind.’
