The corner of her mouth tugged upward in a small, satisfied smile that made my heart skip a beat.
"...If you two are quite finished," Lilian huffed, though her voice lacked any real bite, "we still have an entire floating island to conquer? Let's get moving.”
I chuckled, keeping an arm around Nebula's waist as I turned to face our companions. "Right. Let's move."
We continued down the corridor, our footsteps echoing against ancient stone floors. Crystals embedded in the walls pulsed with a faint blue glow, just bright enough to illuminate our path and cast long shadows as we walked.
The air felt charged with magic, heavy with possibilities and threats alike.
"That was something else," Lilian sighed, stretching her arms overhead and flexing her fingers. "Next time we pick a color-coded gate, let's skip purple."
Solara chuckled softly. "I vote for a gate that's labeled 'cake and rest.'"
"I think you're spending too much time around Lilian,'" I said, earning a roll of eyes from the maid.
Nebula walked closely beside me, her fingers occasionally brushing against mine as if ensuring I was still there.
She glanced at the two girls. "You two girls also look a little beat,” she turned to me. “But how are you alright? Are all the Murim martial artists trained for this level of mental torment, or is it just you?"
I smiled faintly, squeezing her hand gently. "I'm special like that."
"Ah, yes, so special." Lilian clicked her tongue playfully. "Does anything ever get to you?"
I shrugged playfully. "Hmm. Poorly made noodles, usually. You should work on your noodle game.”
“Or maybe I should stop cooking for the ungrateful man?” she shot me a look.
Solara and Lilian snickered, shaking their heads at my response. Nebula's smile grew, and I could feel her relaxing further against my side.
"Seriously though," Solara said to Nebula, her expression worried, "you alright? The stupid voices must have been particularly heavy for you.”
Nebula's eyes met mine, before she answered Solara a moment later. "Yes," she murmured. "It was a little annoying, but I'm alright now.”
The corridor widened gradually, leading us toward a massive arched doorway carved with intricate runes that glowed with the same blue energy that illuminated our path.
Beyond the doorway, I could see an expansive circular space.
"Everyone stay alert," I cautioned. "I doubt we're done with challenges yet.”
“Didn't the android mention three?”
“I think so.”
We stepped through the archway into what was unmistakably an arena. The circular platform was surrounded by ancient marble statues of warriors, each frozen in different combat poses, their lifeless eyes seeming to track our movements.
The floor beneath our feet was etched with complex patterns that pulsed with energy, growing brighter with each step we took.
"What is this place?" Lilian whispered, her hands instinctively clenching into fists.
"Looks like some kind of testing ground," I answered, scanning the room with my Demonic Sphere. "The energy feels... expectant.”
I was curious which challenge it was. With some hints, I could guess it.
As if responding to my words, the ground beneath us trembled. The runes flared brightly, bathing us all in eerie blue light and casting dramatic shadows against the walls. At the center of the arena, shadows began to coalesce, swirling together like ink dropped in water, gradually forming into a towering humanoid figure.
"Wait..." Nebula's eyes narrowed. "Isn't that...?"
Solara’s wings spread from her back as she took a battle stance.
The figure solidified—wearing golden armor. Frost-covered spikes protruded from his shoulders. His armor, once bright and polished, was now corrupted with dark runes that pulsed with malevolent energy. Chains of dark ice wrapped around his arms, clinking softly as he moved.
The image of Sir Likard, the Holy Knight, was twisted into something monstrous.
"Ah, interesting," I noted calmly. Seeing the familiar face sent a chilly reminder through my severed hand, but I didn't feel fear. I had killed him, after all.
I recognized the challenge now. It was a fight against the echo of past enemies.
"Usually each of us receives a separate opponent. But since the three of us have faced Sir Likard, the echo combined him into something special for us."
"You've got to be kidding me," Nebula breathed, taking an instinctive step backward.
Solara sighed dramatically. "Great, teamwork exercises."
“Hey, what about me?” Lilian asked. “I never fought him, where's my opponent?”
The echo of Sir Likard pointed at us, its voice distorted as if speaking through ice. "In the name of Shivaron, purge the darkness." Though it was clearly just repeating fragments of memory, the words sent a chill down my spine.
“I'm not sure,” I ignored the NPC-like opponent and answered Lilian. “Hmm, maybe the ice powers belong to someone you fought? Sir Likard didn't have it. Ah yes, Victor's minion. Sebastian Frostbane, I think. Didn't you fight him?”
Lilian hummed, observing the echo. A moment later, she rolled up her sleeves eagerly, stepping forward with a confident smirk. "Then leave this one to me. I've got some frustrations to vent on the bastard who took your hand.”
"Lilian—" I started, but she was already moving.
"No worries, young master," she called over her shoulder, eyes flashing red, "just watch me work."
She lunged forward with a burst of speed that left afterimages in her wake. The distance between her and the echo closed in a heartbeat.
Her first strike was a powerful right hook that connected with the echo's chest. The impact rang through the arena, shaking dust from the distant ceiling.
– Boom!
Sir Likard's echo barely budged, those ice chains suddenly whipping outward with deadly precision. Lilian twisted midair, narrowly avoiding being wrapped in their frozen grip. Where the chains passed, the air itself frosted over, tiny ice crystals sparkling in the chamber's blue light.
"Damn," Lilian growled, landing in a crouch. "Stronger than it looks."
Not just look wise, I think he was actually stronger than the original. I wasn't certain since he didn't have a Level for me to see.
The echo attacked again, swinging a massive fist wreathed in crackling frost. Lilian danced backward, her feet barely touching the ground.
Then, with a flash of silver light, she stepped upward—into empty air.
"[Moon Walk]!" she called, her body defying gravity as she stood on nothing but air itself, the pale glow of lunar energy illuminating her from beneath. Silver light traced her footsteps as she literally ran upward, circling around the echo of Sir Likard.
"She can walk on air?" Nebula breathed beside me, clearly impressed.
"One of her Class abilities," it was Solara who confirmed, watching with pride as Lilian executed a perfect aerial somersault. "Pretty handy in a fight."
Her class, Warden of the Moon, wasn't anything to scoff at.
From her elevated position, Lilian dove downward, both fists cocked back and glowing with concentrated moonlight. "[Lunar Impact]!" The strike connected with the echo's shoulder, shattering a portion of the frozen armor and sending cracks through the icy surface.
The echo roared, its voice distorting further into something inhuman. It spun with surprising agility, those dark chains lashing out in all directions. Lilian twisted and flipped, using her Moon Walk to launch herself higher each time a chain threatened to connect.
"That's my girl," Solara murmured, arms crossed as she watched the display. "Show that ice cube who's boss."
Nebula raised an eye at how hard Solara was cheering for Lilian. That reminded me, I was yet to tell her about Solara… it would have been too weird to bring it up last night, but I didn't want to delay it for too long like last time. That'd backfire.
I returned my attention to the battle. The werewolf was using her bloodline power now, limbs covered in fur as she bounced between invisible platforms of solidified air, her movements fluid and unpredictable.
Each time she touched down, she launched another strike—fists, elbows, knees, a whirlwind of attacks that continued to chip away at the echo's defenses.
"...She's not half bad," Nebula observed with newfound respect.
"Just wait," Solara grinned proudly. "This is barely warming up."
The echo of Sir Likard grew increasingly frustrated, its attacks becoming wider and more desperate. Ice erupted from the floor in jagged spikes, forcing Lilian to remain airborne. The chains whipped faster, creating intricate patterns that left little room for escape.
Spears of ice rushed toward her fur-clad body.
“You're not the only one,” she huffed, “with ice powers!” She stomped on the floor, and her Lunar Mana tapped into its cooler nature, the cold energy solidifying into an ice wall that blocked the spears.
Sir Likard was Level 95 when we fought him, and he was perhaps a little stronger than that in this echo form. Lilian, as a Level 89, was stronger than him thanks to her cultivation rankings stacking up.
He was strong, but she was equal to the challenge. Her body twisted in ways that seemed to defy physics, slipping through gaps in the chain patterns, always finding the perfect angle for a counterattack.
Then she sent a powerful [Lunar Howl] toward the echo, sonic booms shattering the sound barrier. The particularly powerful strikes sent cracks spreading across the echo's chest plate. Dark energy leaked from the fissures, dissolving into the air like smoke.
"She's actually overpowering it," Nebula said, a hint of excitement in her voice. “It's somewhat unbelievable to see since the same man had nearly killed us all…”
I smiled, but it didn't last long. I frowned, noticing something concerning. "Wait..."
The cracks in the echo's armor began to seal, and blood frost flowed over the damaged areas, reforming into even thicker protection. The figure itself seemed to grow slightly, its presence becoming more oppressive.
"Careful, Lilian!" I called out, recognizing the pattern. "It's healing itself and growing stronger. The longer you take, the stronger it becomes!"
Lilian landed briefly, glancing back at me with irritation flashing in her ruby eyes. "Fine! Playtime's over then."
She took a deep breath in and planted both feet firmly on the ground, gathering mana around her body in a swirling vortex of silver light. The arena dimmed as if the very illumination was being drawn toward her. Her hair whipped around her face, caught in an unseen wind generated by the sheer power she was channeling.
"This is the strongest I have," she said, and a faint outline of a massive wolf formed on her back, its head thrown back in a silent howl.
With a blur of speed that my eyes barely tracked, she dashed forward, appearing before Likard's monstrous echo in an instant.
The spectral wolf moved with her, its ghostly claws matching her movements.
"[Charge of Lunewolf]!"
The phantom wolf rushed through the echo, dealing extensive damage, turning around to rush through it again. As it continued twice more, Lilian engaged herself. Her fists blazed with concentrated moonlight as she unleashed a barrage of strikes so fast they left silver afterimages in the air. Each punch landed with devastating precision, targeting the weak points she'd created earlier. The echo staggered backward under the assault, unable to regenerate quickly enough to counter.

The phantom wolf slammed into the echo again. Then, with a final, thunderous impact, Lilian drove both fists into the center of the echo's chest. The armor shattered completely, fragments of dark ice exploding outward in a glittering spray.
The echo itself dissolved, collapsing into shards that clattered harmlessly to the floor.
[2nd challenge, Echo of the Past, has been cleared. Reward granted.]
The android’s voice spread through the chamber from nowhere and everywhere at the same time, startling us. It didn’t stop there.
[Please complete the rest of the challenges to unlock the Treasury to claim your reward.]
Silence settled over the arena as the last fragments of ice skittered across the stone. We exchanged glances while Lilian exhaled heavily, rolling her shoulders as she turned back to face us. A satisfied smirk played across her lips.
"See? Told you I'd handle it,” she said. “I just reached Level 90. Ten more, and I’ll be 7th Ascension. I can’t believe it!”
Solara applauded gently. "Bravo. Truly the greatest snack defender I've seen."
Lilian burst out laughing. "I'm glad you finally recognize my greatness, Solara!"
"Quite impressive," Nebula admitted, a newfound respect in her eyes. "I've never seen anyone move like that before."
Lilian offered her a smug grin. "Perks of being a Lunewolf. We've got style."
"Alright," I interrupted with a light clap, "Greatness noted. Let's move on before our next 'old friend' pays us a visit."
I couldn’t be sure if the mechanics of this room wouldn’t activate again and bring the Vampiric Father next.
As we crossed the arena, I noticed Lilian subtly slow her pace to walk alongside Nebula. Their relationship had always been strained by jealousy, but now Lilian bumped her shoulder lightly against Nebula's.
"Hey," she said quietly, "you okay after... you know, earlier?"
Nebula looked startled by the unexpected concern. "I'm fine."
"Good," Lilian nodded firmly. "Because only I'm allowed to give you a hard time, not some creepy ghost thing."
Nebula's lips quirked upward. "How generous of you."
"I know, right?" Lilian winked. "I'm for sure a saint."
We continued through another doorway on the far side of the arena, leaving behind the scattered remnants of the echo warrior. The passage narrowed again, leading us down a gently sloping path toward what appeared to be another chamber ahead.
"So," Solara mused as we walked, "exactly how many more of these charming challenges do you think we'll face before reaching anything worthwhile?"
"Just this," I replied. "These trials are designed to test different aspects of the participants. We've faced mental fortitude and combat prowess so far..."
"What's next?" Lilian asked.
"You’ll see,” I said mysteriously as I led them deeper.
****
After ten minutes of walking and avoiding Wraiths, the passageway opened onto a small antechamber dominated by an ornate door, unlike anything we'd seen so far.
It towered nearly fifteen feet high, its surface covered in shifting runes and arcane symbols that rearranged themselves continuously in hypnotic patterns. The entire door seemed to ripple like the surface of a disturbed pond, colors flowing across its metallic surface.
I approached the door, my fingers hovering over the shifting runes on its surface. They rearranged themselves continuously, moving into different spots, glowing faintly with arcane energy that tingled against my skin.
"Is this another challenge?" Nebula questioned cautiously.
"Yes." I traced the pattern, recognizing it immediately. "A puzzle. Right behind this door is the treasure room. Once we clear this challenge, we get access to it."
Solara leaned forward, squinting at the writing. "Can you solve it?"
“Make sure you solve it, young master. If you’re having trouble, ask me, I’ll lend you my brains,” Lilian added.
"That might make this entire thing crash down on us, Lilian," I teased her with a chuckle before turning to the puzzle. I looked at it with perhaps more confidence than the situation warranted. "This is a dimensional lock puzzle. Don’t be surprised by its grandeur name. We need to rearrange these runes into the correct sequence while avoiding whatever nasty surprises it might throw at us. Simple enough."
“Hey, overconfidence isn’t good…” Nebula placed a hand on my shoulder and said.
I studied the runes more carefully, memories from the game filtering through my mind. It’d been a long time since I played it, so I had some difficulties recalling the fine details, but I’d been thinking about it since the first time I heard about Nevaramis so it didn’t take long. The objective was to align the five elemental symbols—fire, water, earth, air, and void—in the correct sequence that matched the constellation pattern hidden within the door's frame.
"See these markings?" I pointed to faint star-like patterns barely visible along the door's edge. "They represent constellations. Each elemental rune needs to be placed beneath its corresponding star sign."
"Seems straightforward enough," Nebula observed.
"That's what they want you to think," I muttered. "Watch."
I touched the first rune—representing fire—and slid it toward what I knew was its correct position. Immediately, the floor beneath Lilian shifted, tiles dropping away to reveal darkness below.
She leaped backward with supernatural speed, barely avoiding the pit. "What the—?!"
"Sorry," I winced. "Dimensional lock puzzles link their traps to physical space around us. Move a rune, trigger a trap."
Solara's wings twitched beneath her disguise. "Couldn't you have mentioned that before nearly getting her killed?"
"Where's the fun in that?" I grinned, earning exasperated looks from all three women. Lilian would have been fine, she could walk on air, and a little prank wasn’t the end of the world.
I returned to the puzzle, carefully sliding the next rune—water—into position. This time, small holes opened in the walls to our right, and darts shot across the room.
"Down!" I shouted.
Nebula dropped elegantly to one knee, the darts sailing over her head. "My uniform is getting dusty," she sighed dramatically.
I chuckled, sliding the earth rune into place. "Next time, wear something more practical. Did the Academy not let you bring armor?"
She gave me an incredulous stare. "Is that coming from the guy dressed as an edgy demon cult leader? And yes, they did. I didn’t activate it since you said this gate was a mental challenge. I guess I should activate it now," she said, reaching out to twist the bracelet on her wrist.
The change was instantaneous. A faint surge of pale light rippled from the bracelet, spreading across Nebula’s body in soft waves. In seconds, a sleek suit of blue-black leather armor emerged, hugging her curves like a second skin. Intricate stitching glinted along the edges, revealing faint crimson highlights that echoed her vampire heritage.
A protective hood, lined with the same supple material, slipped up over her hair, casting her face in half-shadow yet leaving her eyes visible. When the transformation finished, she stood there looking both elegant and formidable, as though every joint and seam was tailored by arcane artistry for perfect movement.
"Must be your mother’s pick," I said playfully, eyeing her curves. “You look gorgeous.” As she blushed, I returned to manipulating the fourth rune.
The floor beneath us rumbled, and sections began to rise and fall at random. Solara hopped nimbly from one stable section to another, avoiding a spike trap that emerged from below.
"I really thought we’d be playing chess inside a mind gate,” Solara said. “Maybe next time you’ll choose an 'easy' gate?" she called, dancing away from another rising spike.
Lilian, who had been forced to leap twice to avoid falling floor tiles, landed gracefully beside Nebula. When Nebula wobbled slightly on her section of the floor, Lilian casually steadied her with a hand on her elbow.
"Careful, vampire lady," she said, the usual bite in her tone softened. "Don't want you getting injured before the real fun starts."
Nebula seemed surprised by the assistance but offered a small nod of thanks. “I can fly, but thank you.”
"Why can't puzzles ever just involve punching things? Lilian could have taken care of it," Solara sighed dramatically, dodging another dart trap that activated when I moved the fifth rune.
"There’s no fun in that. I’m almost done," I replied, concentrating on the final alignment.
Flames suddenly burst from hidden vents in the ceiling, forcing us all to press against the walls. The heat was intense enough that even I felt uncomfortable.
Solara spread her wings, and the flames rushed into her feathers, snuffing out. I let out a whistle until another series of flames burst forth. Solara gave me a tired look. "I hate to rush you, but perhaps you could solve this before we're all roasted alive? Well, not me, but you get the point."
"Almost there," I promised, making the final adjustment.
The runes locked into place with a satisfying click, and the rest of the fire immediately died. The entire door glowed with golden light, the arcane symbols flowing together to form a single unified pattern before the massive doorway swung silently open.
The entire place seemed to tremble by that movement, alerting any ghosts that might be lurking nearby.
Beyond lay a glowing chamber, pillars of white stone supporting a domed ceiling adorned with constellations that matched the patterns from the puzzle.
"You're welcome," I said as I dusted off my hands with a grin.
"Show-off," Lilian muttered, nudging my shoulder as she passed. I followed my companions into what could only be the treasure room.
****
The glowing chamber spread before us, a massive circular space lined with gleaming marble pillars. Above, the domed ceiling displayed an intricate map of constellations that stretched across a painted night sky. The chamber itself was filled with pedestals of varying heights, each holding different artifacts that shimmered with ancient power.
At the center stood a slightly taller pedestal, upon which a few items rested. The main thing that stood out was the floating text, which almost resembled the System.
[Congratulations on completing the First Trial. All four of you have been granted points that’d determine your rankings at the final Trial. Please register your names or aliases for future referrals.]
We exchanged glances as we approached the text and touched it. An empty slot appeared for all of us, and we said out-named out loud for it to be registered. Of course, the three of us used our fake names, while Nebula used her real one.
Then, we focused on the items waiting for us. Several potions for stamina, mana, and health were available, but those seemed to be basic rewards. Next to them were two translucent, glowing orbs that pulsed with energy. They almost seemed to be breathing, their light waxing and waning in a slow, hypnotic rhythm.
"Jackpot," Lilian whispered, her ruby eyes reflecting the chamber's glow. "Look at all this loot!"
I looked at them cautiously, activating my [Insight] skill to scan them. Information flooded my awareness as I examined each artifact. "The orbs are called Fragments of Echo," I murmured, indicating the central orb. "Interesting. They seem to give protection against illusions. Should be useful in the future. There's also..."
My voice trailed off as my gaze landed on a smaller pedestal near the back of the chamber. Unlike the rewards in front of us, that thing seemed to pulse with an energy that resonated with something deep inside me.
Upon it sat what appeared to be a crown—sleek, elegantly designed, with swirling patterns that seemed to shift and change as I looked at it.
"There's something else here," I said, feeling my pulse quicken. "Something powerful... but there's only one."
As I approached the pedestal, I felt the artifact's energy intensify with each step. The crown's surface rippled like water, reflecting impossible depths within its metallic sheen.
"What is it?" Solara asked, peering over my shoulder.
Using my [Insight] again, I examined the crown more closely. Information appeared in my mind's eye, detailed and extensive. This wasn't just any artifact—this was something truly unique.
Lilian squinted, using her own inspection abilities. Was it called Aetheris Eyes? Her odd-shaped pupils widened. "Holy shit," she breathed. "That's... incredible."
"What?" Nebula demanded, moving closer. "What are you two seeing that we can't?"
I was about to explain when a thought struck me. Before, I'd been able to reveal Solara's Ascension Quest like some divine revelation. Could I do something similar with this System screen? Theoretically, it should be possible. If I could peer into other people’s screens, I should be able to share mine.
"...Share Screen," I said experimentally, focusing my will on making the information visible to all.
To my surprise and delight, the screen materialized in the air before us, visible to everyone. The glowing text hung between us like a spectral display:
===
[ Inspect: Crown of Echoes ]
Name: Crown of Echoes
Rank: Mythic (Illusion / Psi / Echo)
Type: Legendary Artifact (Headgear)
Level Requirement: 70+ recommended
===
Solara gasped. "You can share these? Since when?"
"Shouldn’t you be the least surprised?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
Nebula stepped closer, her crimson eyes scanning the floating text. "Mythic rank... that's incredibly rare. And these abilities..." Her finger traced the air near the description of ‘effects’. "The potential applications are astounding."
===
Effects:
- Echo Chamber – Manifests illusions that mirror the user’s thoughts, memories, or fears. These illusions can be projected outward to confuse, manipulate, or distract foes.
- Flickering Reality – For a short duration, illusions become partially tangible, able to inflict minor physical damage or interact with objects. Their power scales with the user’s mastery of mind-based or illusion magic, or mana capacity and control.
- Empathic Resonance – Enhances the user’s mental senses, allowing them to detect strong emotional states in others (fear, rage, despair) and exploit them for more potent illusions.
- Mirror’s Return – If severely wounded, the user can conjure an “Echo Clone” to continue fighting for a set period (often 60–120 seconds). This clone imitates the user’s skill but only at ~70% effectiveness. Once it vanishes, the user’s illusions are briefly weakened.
Drawbacks:
- Residual Whispers – Extended use or overexertion can cause the user to experience hallucinations or confusion, risking losing track of real vs. illusory events.
- Will Over Magic – Strong mental fortitude is required. A user who can’t separate illusions from reality could become trapped in their own illusions, effectively dooming themselves.
- Single Bearer – Once claimed, it bonds to the user’s mind. Removal or forced transfer is only possible if the user willingly severs the link (or is mentally broken).
===
"Perfect for someone with mana control," Solara observed. "This is a perfect item for you, Iska. The mental requirements though..."
"He’ll be fine. But yeah, that 'trapped in your own illusions' bit doesn't sound fun," Lilian grimaced. "Imagine thinking you're fighting someone, but you're actually just punching the air while everyone watches. Or worse, fighting your friends."
"It would require exceptional mental discipline, yep," I agreed, scanning the drawbacks again. My time fighting against the mental illusions in the purple gate had demonstrated my resistance to such things. "But in the right hands..."
Nebula looked up at me, understanding in her eyes. "You're considering claiming it?" Before I could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed from the entrance behind us.
“...Put your masks on, girls. Solara, hide your wings.”
We turned as one to see five figures emerge from the passageway—three men and two women, all heavily armed and armored. Turns out, we weren’t the only ones who chose this particular gate. These people didn’t look the fun type.
Their expressions were grim and determined, and I immediately spotted the numbers floating above their heads.
[Varis Steelhand, Level 99]
[Lyra Nightshade, Level 98]
[Dorn, Level 68]
[Elena, Level 77]
[Garrett, Level 64]
According to my [Insight], the man at the front—Varis—stepped forward with measured confidence. His sharp, calculating eyes swept over our group before settling on the crown behind us. My Demonic Sphere caught on something… interesting in his presence.
“Tell them to leave, Lyra,” he said a moment later, crossing his arms and stepping out of the conversation.
"Well, well," Lyra said, lips curving into a cold smile. "Looks like someone beat us to the prize." She raised her hand in a deceptively casual gesture. "We'll be taking that unique artifact. Step aside, and no one gets hurt."
Solara tensed beside me, her hand hovering near her dagger. Lilian let out a low growl, her fists clenching at her sides. Nebula's eyes began to glow with a faint crimson light, her vampiric nature surfacing in preparation for conflict.
I maintained my position, my nerves cool, as I stared back at Lyra steadily. "The artifact belongs to whoever earns it, dear friend," I said, my voice carrying an icy calm that belied the tension building inside me. "I suggest you reconsider your threat."
Varis sighed, rubbing his forehead, while Lyra’s smile widened as she slowly unsheathed her blade, the metal singing softly as it left its scabbard. "I hoped you'd say that."
The chamber fell silent, the only sound the faint hum of mana as both groups readied themselves for what would come next.
These two leading the group, I noted, doing a double check with my Demonic Sphere. They have weird energies. Not quite demonic, but not normal… Like Iaskin before.
I knew what it meant.
Something big had changed compared to the game.
The Outer God Cult was here to claim my Nevaramis.
