Writer’s Diary Note 8 — Learning to Look

I used to think observation was accidental.

Something that happened when my mind wandered and my pen stalled.

  Now, I know better.

I am in the metro today, travelling back home.

I sit with my notebook—not to write. Not immediately.

  Just to sit.

The notebook stays closed on my lap. The pen rests on top—unused, but ready.

The world feels different when I am not trying to take from it.

A man ties his shoelace twice, as if afraid it might come undone again.

A woman laughs too loudly on the phone, filling the space around her.

Someone hums an unfamiliar tune while waiting for the doors to open.

None of these moments ask to be written.

  And yet, they stay.

I realize then—observation is not stealing.

  It is permission.

I open my notebook. Not to capture everything.

  Just one thing.

A small movement draws my attention.

A little girl in a princess dress stands close to her father, fingers curled into the denim of his jeans.

Her mother stands opposite, arms weighed down with shopping bags.

The child reaches out, curious and restless.

A warning follows. The air tightens for a moment.

The girl stiffens, then turns inward, clinging to her father.

He lowers himself to her height.

  Says something I cannot hear.

His hand rests on her back.

  The moment passes.

I do not know what it meant.

I do not try to decide who was right.

I only notice the way her grip loosens. The way the noise of the carriage returns.

  The pen moves slowly.Carefully.

Not because I am afraid of getting it wrong—but because I know I am part of what I am seeing.

Perhaps writing is not about finding meaning.Perhaps it is about standing still long enough for meaning to pass by.

  I close the notebook again.

  Today, I looked.Tomorrow, I may write.

  And that feels honest.

When did you last stop trying to explain—and simply pay attention?
