She saw it on his Instagram an hour ago. He's been sitting in his car ever since.
Cass: hey I saw it this morning. you okay?
Joel: You saw.
Cass: yeah. I should have texted sooner but I didn't know what to say.
Joel: It's fine. I'm not okay.
Cass: okay. start wherever.
Joel: It came out of nowhere. I was sitting there and they called me in and I thought it was completely routine, and then—
Cass: they initiated?
Joel: Obviously. I would never have done it myself.
Cass: no, of course. how long were you two even together
Joel: Three and a half years.
Cass: god, joel. and there were no signs?
Joel: There were signs. Meetings I wasn't in. Decisions getting made without me. I kept my head down. Kept performing. Told myself it would work itself out.
Cass: like they were already moving on without telling you.
Joel: That's exactly what it was. And I still thought I had more time.
Cass: you always do that. you rationalize until you can't.

Joel: Exactly.
Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.
Cass: was it just them, or was there something bigger going on
Joel: Structural, I think. Big picture things I was reading wrong.
Cass: some things just run their course. maybe they outgrew what you were to them. that's not on you.
Joel: I know. I gave everything to this.
Cass: I mean, you gave them everything. Years of your life. And they just decided you weren't the right fit.
Joel: That's word for word what they said.
Cass: that's such a cold thing to say.
Joel: "We've reached the conclusion that this isn't the right fit going forward." That was the language.
Cass: that's the most corporate thing I've ever heard.
Joel: I said okay and went back to my desk and cleared it out. Had a bag in the coat closet.
Cass: wait. today?
Joel: Fifteen minutes.
Cass: does anyone at work know?
Joel: The whole floor watched me walk out with the bag.
Cass: oh no. how did you think I found out.
Joel: Through the office. Why?
Cass: no. instagram. this morning.
Joel: What did you see on my Instagram?
Cass: joel. your relationship status.

[Joel stopped typing]
Joel: Cass. This isn't about Selin.
Cass: ...what
Joel: Selin and I broke up last week. I got fired this morning.
Cass: you got WHAT
Joel: HR. Ten AM. I've been sitting in my car for two hours.
Cass: oh my god "they just decided you weren't the right fit."
Joel: Word for word.
Cass: I said that about selin. I was doing breakup support.
Joel: I know.
Cass: "maybe they outgrew what you were to them."
Joel: Also word for word.
Cass: do you want me to come over
Joel: I think I've been sitting in this car long enough.
