To The Next Level
The day had finally come. Danny had thought through several scenarios for his inevitable and orchestrated duel with his foe. He had made it a point to ask Grisre early on through their link what she knew of the Chimagriff's capabilities. She begrudgingly obliged. Her opinion about his scheme was not favorable to say the least, but once he had explained it to her, even Grisre had no choice but to agree. Furthermore, if they were going to escape, they would need the help of the other creatures, and with her slave bond to Francis in full swing, there was no way the novice beast trainer could compel them. Most of the plan components were figured out. Danny knew the layout of the place, and had made it a point to memorize every last description and detail until he had a clear mental map of the facility. The staff was mostly made up of slaves that were captured by the Zoo and forced to work under Francis by slave bond who received orders from a mysterious second in command. Why Grisre only received orders from Francis was beyond him. So, in short, kill Francis and Grisre's slave bonds dissolve. Come to find out, slaves were not cheap. So, the only people they needed to look out for were the poachers, but the odds of running into one of them was slim thanks to Grisre's soul bonding. So, barring the creature issue, all that was left was his collar problem, and the routine of the so-called staff.
Grisre opened his cage with a scowl while Francis personally oversaw the other combatant’s cage. “While I do understand, I do not approve.” Grisre's said through the link. Worry seeped through the bond. Danny thought he could see a tear fall from her eye which she quickly wiped away. “I know, but I have to do this. It is the only way, and I'll be fine.” He tried to send his confidence. “Well, what's done is done. There was no going back.” Danny said to himself. They reached the gate were a teary eyed Grisre gently placed Danny down at the gate and removed his collar. Francis noticed her tears. “Quit your blubbering. You do this every time.” All she managed was a yes master, but he had already left for the opposite end of what he had come to know as the arena. Danny wished he could teach the bastard some manners, but he would get the chance in due time. Patience was a virtue after all. He felt Grisre give him a comforting pat, but he figured it was more for her then for him. Her touch reminded him of Cathrin in a strange way. Then, it stopped, and he heard the door behind him close. This brought Danny back to reality. He noticed that he was boxed in. His animal mind began its struggle to overtake him as he sensed a dangerous aura erupt from the other side followed by a bone chilling roar. Despite his struggle with the animal within, a deep guttural growl slipped past his lips that sounded weak by comparison. If Danny was a spectator at this fight and was betting based on battle cry, then his bets would definitely not be on the pitiful cat that was he.
Danny reviewed what he knew. It could fly, breathe fire, and launch fire bolts from its tail, and for the crem de la crem, it had powerful jaws and claws. His heart began to beat as fear and nervousness crept into his being. What was he thinking? He was not ready for this fight. “No! That is the animal half telling me to run. It's put up or shut up.” Danny growled encouragingly to himself. After all, he had his weapons too. To start, he reviewed his skills, spells, and abilities. Like D&D or any kind of RPG, you never went into a boss fight without buffs. So, Danny activated his manna barrier and bestial defense.
Mana Barrier Lvl-10 Novice- Extends a shell of mana that reflects, deflect, and at times absorbs incoming objects and spells. Barrier's defense is 100+X where X = the skills level
Bestial Defense Lvl-0 Novice- Your Fur hardens with the metal element giving the creature a defense of 20+X were X= the skills level.
He could feel a quarter of his mana leave his body. The Chimagriff let out another roar. This time Danny did not respond. His efforts at the moment were focused on buffing himself. Soon, Danny's fur took on the metallic properties of metal, and a barely visible shell of mana formed around him like a protective cocoon. The last time he had used this; it had sent him to the ship's infirmary after he had stopped a nuke. Only this time he was using it to defend against another beast, so it couldn't be that bad. Right? The arena doors began to open. Danny's foe slammed against the gate ready to crush him. To his surprise, the creature didn't seem to have buffed itself. Then again, looks can be deceiving.
The Chimagriff charged as soon as it could squeeze through the gate opening. Danny did the same. The two ran at each other’s. The cat channeling his recovered mana into all of his claws while the Chimagriff inhaled. Danny recognized the breath attack right away, and juked to the right. Fire streamed past him catching the edge of his mana barrier, and hell that was a lot of damage. Danny noted that his mana barrier stopped most of it, but he also took note that his mana took a 10-point hit. If it could do that, then his bestial defense would get shredded. Plus, his stamina took a 5 point as a side effect of that breath attack. He continued his charge, and the two clashed. He leapt onto its back digging his mana infused claws into its back, and began rending the flesh exposing bits if its spine. However, the Chimagriff lashed out with its many tails smacking into the barrier sending faint ripples across it. Despite the attack being absorbed by his defenses, Danny was sent flying off his back. “You will die. You will be food.” It growled with hatred. Danny said nothing, and took advantage of the time given to him by launching five metal colored energy scythes of death at the hate filled creature. It took the Chimagriff by surprise. Its reaction, however fast it was, just was not fast enough. It dodged to the left, but still got hit by one as it ripped into one of the Chimagriff's tails. It howled in pain and rage as its tail hit the ground flopping and flailing. Danny could see its remaining eight tails glowing red as each tail flung a fire bolt at him. Unlike Danny's steel claws, all eight hit home. The first seven splashed against his mana barrier, but the eighth and final one broke through splashing against his back leg.
The heat was intense. Danny felt the fur on his leg melt off exposing bare skin that blistered, and like before he saw his mana go down by 10 more points. “So, every time it gets breached, I lose mana to repair it. That's good to know.” Danny thought. Unlike his barrier his bestial defense did not auto upkeep. He suspected that if it had not been for his mana barrier, he would not be standing. This presented Danny with a problem, and that was mana and stamina conservation. Sure, his mana came back, but he could only do it so much. Once his stamina was gone there would be no more mana. At that point he would be helpless. A light bulb went off in his head. What if he released his steel claws one claw at a time. “That could work.” He thought. The Chimagriff lunged at Danny with its powerful claws scraping the edge of his defenses. Luckily Danny was quick enough. He darted under his enemy, and put his theory to the test. Danny primed his claws. He held the feeling his claws had when storing the manna in all but one claw, and swiped at the creature’s leg releasing one scythe of metallic energy that sliced through its leg. A notification popped up, but Danny ignored it. He'd read it later if he was to survive. With its remaining three legs it took off into the air taking a deep breath. It soon exhaled a storm of fire upon Danny. Too late to dodge, he watched as scorching hot fire washed over his barrier licking and burning at his protective cocoon. Danny felt the fire began to punch through, but he had no intentions of being barbecued. Instead, he darted out of the inferno with more burn marks as his reward for living. There was no stopping now, at this rate he would run out of mana, and that was death. Danny would have to lure it down if he wanted to stand a chance. Sure, he could steal claw it, but that took manna. Something future him had not a lot left. Not only that, but his foe looked to be just as maneuverable in the air as it was on the ground. So, Danny started darting around the arena dodging and doing a series of feints to try to frustrate his foe into a direct attack.
It worked. After one agonizing minute that felt like eons of dodging fire bolts and fiery breath, the Chimagriff finally had enough. It dove for Danny claws outstretched and jaws agape. This is what he had been waiting for. With the rest of his claws, he let loose a storm of steel claws that collided with the creature's face. Each energy scythe slicing into it, tearing through bone, muscle, and brain matter. He should have dodged, but at that moment his animal half decided to make a play for dominance. Thankfully Danny's defenses were still up, because that small delay in reaction allowed the Chimagriff's corps to slammed into him, sending him careening into the arena wall. His mana and stamina drain allowed the mana barrier to withstand the abuse but barely. Sensing the fight was won, Danny let instinct take over. It directed him to his prize, something his knowledge skill informed him of as a spirit stone.
Spirit Stone: The core of a lesser monster, known as a beast. This stone houses its magic essence as well as its life experiences, which may grant its most dominant ability to a beast that consumes it.
It didn't take long to eat his way to it, and gobble it up, and like always he felt power rush into him along with a flood of notifications.
King watched as the second left his office. Of course, he knew where Rayna was. Who was that old dog trying to fool. For the most part King pretended to be oblivious to the things his second mostly did, because he ran that old beastkin into the ground. Whether he admitted it or not, King heavily relied on Gerwulf. The only reason he had not killed him was for two reasons. The first was that Gerwulf had no ambition to take his place, and the second was that he knew how things were run and would occasionally make valuable contributions. COUGH, COUGH When King pulled his hand away, he noticed blood covering the palm of his hand. He sighed. That reminded King of the third reason. He was dying. He pulled out two pieces of parchment that were labeled “To my successor” One was for Gerwulf while the other was for his dear Rayna. After hearing that she captured a demi beast, he could not help but add her as a candidate, and he was secretly proud of her. Catching one was no small feat. They required the proper use of resources, and she had done it with a few men and a paralytic. Furthermore, it was captured in dragon territory. King had to admit, Rayna was brimming with potential, and that's what made his choice difficult. Well, since Gerwulf was trying to kill her, why not make it a contest. He knew Rayna would go for blood once she realized what Gerwulf had tried. Heaven only knew he would have done the same. Hell, it took King all he had not to kill Gerwulf now, so to the victor goes the spoils. He rather liked the Idea of snake vs falcon. Though, he was a betting man, and despite knowing Gerwulf rather well, Rayna was a creature after his own heart. So, King knew how ruthless she could be. He just hoped that Rayna would not hate him after all this was said and done. Besides, what better way to administer this final test than by pitting his daughter who has the potential against the very beastkin that tried to kill her.
Grisre Stood next to her master. Inside, her stomach was doubling over at what just transpired. Of course, Danny won his fight against the Chimagriff, but that did not mean he could take that kind of risk and always end on a high note. Grisre would make sure Danny got a mind full when she got the chance. This was her sanity on the line, not just his. Her inner rant was about to take an angry left turn when Francis broke her train of thought with a half-hearted backhand. “Pay attention.” Francis demanded. “Ye-yes master.” Grisre stammered. “Go place the cat in the observation room, and check its level.” Francis gestured at Danny who had consumed the Chimagriff's spirit stone. She bowed her head and immediately went down to retrieve the cat while giving Francis a mental middle finger. Grisre felt humor coming back through the link. Her anger at Danny for his recklessness had not abated, but at least Grisre could take solace in the fact that Danny had survived. She put him through the usual routine, and she gently placed him in a restoration cage to heal, then let him have it. “What were you thinking? You could have died out there. Beasts die here every day, and I have to watch it happen. I feel their desperation and disrepair.” “Sorry, but you know I had to do this.” Danny defended through the link. “You foolish cat... man... thing! It's not what you had to do that bothers me; it is how reckless you were. Metal element is weak against fire element. Do not forget what happens to me if you die.” She admonished. Grisre felt his realization at understanding something and anger “I understand.” Was all he sent back. Grisre could feel his urge to lash out and call her stupid, but he was kind enough to try to shield those thoughts from her. She placed Danny in the observation room not meeting his gaze. Had he known? Was she over reacting? How could she not? Those fights were life and death with an added consequence should he have lost. Though, part of Grisre could not help but feel elated with some happiness when she saw his newly acquired ability (Aura of the Alpha Beast). Grisre let slip a small grin as she felt something she thought lost, and not the lie she would often tell herself, but real hope. At first, she humored Danny's ideas of escape viewing it as nothing more than a fantasy, but now she felt like there was a real chance.
Danny laid in the restoration cage stewing as, yet again he was violated by this rooms magic. What Grisre said through their link lingered. True! He had been reckless, but even if Danny had the ability to dictate the terms of the fight, he was still stuck with his element. On top of that, this was a calculated risk. More than that, Danny would not let Grisre rot here. Even if it meant one of them losing their sanity. He would rather die than forsake his vow no matter how dumb or selfish it might seem. He supposed that it was the drive to make good on his vows and promises that drove him. Since this specific vow was for Grisre, there was no way he would just give up. Towards the end of the scan Danny felt hope and a flicker of happiness coming from Grisre. Not long after, he was placed back with the rest of the beasts who called this prison home. He decided to go through his notifications. His suspicions needed to be confirmed.

Danny read through all his notifications looking for something that would help him command the other beasts. When he had gotten to the last notification, he saw it. Aura of the alpha beast. At first Danny was overjoyed at the prospect of controlling a small army of beasts. That was before he had read the description which stated it had a 10% chance. The upside was that the more time he spent with the other creatures, the better his chances were at gaining their subservience. He looked around the room counting ten cages including his own that contained a creature. Picking A creature to test this new ability out on, Danny focused on his aura, and like his summon water spell, focused his intent into it. With his aura now potent with his demand for subservience and dominion over others, Danny thrust it upon all the beasts within the room. Statistically, he was guaranteed at least one success, and sure enough he had. A fox beast bowed its head in recognition to his authority. The beast spoke to him in the tongue that all beasts shared “If you lead, my prey is yours.” Before Danny could stop himself, he had finished the binding. “Then you may drink of my waters, and sleep in my shade.”
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
His ability did not seem invasive. As a matter of fact, it seemed to offer a choice, and the 10% was the likelihood it would choose to. Danny pulled open his player sheet, and looked at Aura of the Alpha Beast one more time.
Aura of the Alpha Beast – Aura Lvl-1 Novice- Your aura now exudes a dominate beast effect. You may exert your will on a beast(s) 2 levels lower than you with a 10% chance of subservience. The longer a beast has been in your presence the greater the chance of subservience.
His attention lingered over the abilities effect. So, the fox beast was loyal to him, and it appeared to be permanent. That was good. When Danny snapped back to, he noticed the other creatures in the room now looking at him. One beast finally broke the silence. It was a creature that he had come to know as a Shadow Stelt. “You have the Aura of the old Alpha.” Came a raspy and gurgling sound. This surprised Danny. The amorphous shadow blob had never spoken until now. Maybe it was an alpha beast thing. His animal mind demanded that Danny show dominance. It had guided him with the fox, so why not now. His mind was that of a human not a beast, so reluctantly, Danny let the beast within guide him. “Yes, he is prey, and fell because he was weak.” Wow, so that was the mind of a beast. The Shadow Stelt took on a more defined shadowy shape, and also bowed “If you lead, my prey is yours.” It rasped and gurgled. “Then you may drink of my waters, and sleep in my shade.” Danny finished.
Congratulation! Aura of the Alpha Beast has increase from lvl 1 to lvl 3 Novice. Aura of the Alpha Beast – Your aura now exudes a dominate beast effect. You may exert your will on a beast(s) 2 levels lower than you with a 10% chance of subservience. The longer a beast has been in your presence the greater the chance of subservience.
The other six beasts watched with mixed expressions of interest and shock.
Danny noted his success; however, it had drained most of his mana. It would be a while before he could use that ability again. Chain casting this was definitely out of the question, but in order to achieve one of his goals, Danny would need all the creatures in the room. While he waited for his mana to recharge, he could study his collar. So, Danny turned his sight inward to study his mana flow. Like before, he followed its flow, and noticed that his mana was not the babbling brook from before, but more like a dried-up creek with sparse puddles here and there. There was another difference. Instead of his body taking in mana at a trickle, mana seemed to pouring into his body at a slightly higher rate while at the same time making Danny tired. He pulled up his player sheet, and saw his stamina draining. He turned his focus away from his player sheet, and back to his mana flow which was now in the early stages of flowing throughout his body. He traced the flow to his collar, but when he tried to trace the flow in the collar, it shut him out. It was like it knew the difference between mana and consciousness. That was when he was reminded of an old earth term, he learned in class during a VR session. Trojans! It could work. If Danny disguised himself as mana maybe the collar would let him in.
Danny immersed himself into the mana that had now started flowing throughout his body. He submerged himself into his mana stream, and at that moment began to feel like he had become one with it, but also still a separate being. It swept Danny away, and soon the collar had sucked him up. It was genius yet simple. Not only that, but it plugged directly into his mana, constantly taking it in then using it to fuel his cage. However, it had no mana back up of its own. He surfaced from his mana, and at that moment, the collar threw him out, shocking him to his core. If Danny had human features, he would have been seen grinning and wincing at the pain wracking his body. What needed to happen was simple. All he had to do was starve his collar. No collar equaled no barrier, and no barrier meant that Danny could squeeze through the cage's bars. After all, what beast would willingly drain itself of all its mana to the point of fatigue. Now all he had to do was gain the subservience of the other six beasts. Danny placed his head on his paws and fell asleep. It was definitely nice not having that Chimagriff making all that racket.
The next morning Danny woke up before the others. “This is perfect.” He purred. Their minds would be at their weakest. If outside stimulus can alter or create dreams, then why not magic. So, he tried his luck again with his aura of the alpha beast. Like before, he packed his aura full of intent, and blasted it with all his might at the sleeping creatures in the room. It did not go like Danny thought it would. Well... He didn't really know what to expect. All six victims of his experiment mumbled the covenant. “If you lead, my prey is yours.” While Danny said the last part “Then you may drink of my waters, and sleep in my shade.” No doubt causing dreams of their time with that insufferable Chimagriff. Violently, they awoke jumping to whatever they stood on. Groggy and confused the creatures stared at Danny with understanding and clarity dawning their features. He was greeted by a notification.
Congratulation! Aura of the Alpha Beast has increase from lvl 3 to lvl 5 Novice. Aura of the Alpha Beast – Your aura now exudes a dominate beast effect. You have performed an unusual action. You gain +5 to Luck and +3 to CHA.
After reviewing his notifications, he gave a command to the awake creatures. “Lay down.” They layed down. Some of them were angry, but others just excepted it while the other three tried to resist only to find that they could not. Satisfied with the outcome, Danny opened his player sheet. To see how much mana and stamina he had left to burn through for his collar test.

Ross and Karber's journey to Coran had taken an interesting twist to say the least. Karber had flown over Randall in dragon form and put the fear of god into the good city folk. Needless to say, Ross found out the hard way just how prepared that cities noble was. Karber's flight path took them over the city where the noble had most likely ordered what looked like an entire squadron of wyverns. Sitting on each one was a knight wearing a type of dragon scale armor. He had stopped of course, but only after he almost provoked an attack. Ross could hear the Dragon's deep throated chuckle as Karber landed the two of them safely onto the ground where he then proceeded to take his human form. Ross was a military man himself, and while he knew not how this world's military did business, he figured it was for the best if he stayed visible. So, Ross jumped into Karber's arms.
The captain and her Wyvern's encircled them while the captain herself landed. The captain was a muscular woman with red hair spilling out of her helmet. She angrily approached. “Gods dammit Karber. You gave the people in this city a damn heart attack.” The Dragon of course gave a sheepish grin which seemed to infuriate the women more, and made Ross wonder if he did this sort of thing often for a good laugh. That turned out to be the case when later Karber confessed that he did it to piss Rory off. After they had squared everything away with the city's military. They were led to the house of the city's noble who turned out to be a whiny shit. But once the Dragon pulled out his identification, the noble did a complete one eighty. The noble went from complete distaste and condemnation to the epitome of polite and concerned. “Typical politician. No doubt he's a scum bag too.” Ross thought with utter distaste. His demeanor reminded him of the Democrat fucks that used to virtue signal during the 2000s. He defiantly remembered that history lesson. It turned out the people revolted and killed their democratic leadership which resulted in a 2nd civil war. That aside, the nobles' actions only proved the fact that Karber really was a noble knight for the king. He almost fell out of Karber's arms from the shock. “No doubt why this noble idiot was treating Karbor like royalty.” Ross mewled with disgust. He saw that Karber was not enjoying this either. An idea occurred to him. It was taught that cats could puke on command. Ross began running the footage through his mind with joy in his heart. He'd just have to hit something that looked expensive.
Karber stood there and tolerated the pudgy piglet of a viper as he welcomed Karber with mock sincerity. It was only because of his royal crest, otherwise this piece of trash politician would have continued his berating, and who knew maybe Karber would have lost it and destroyed this city like he would have in a not-so-distant past. It turned out this was the bastard son of the fool that tried to have him assassinated. Karber took his hand with a fake smile of his own. “Nice to make your acquaintance high lord Becket.” “Like wise. So, tell me Sir Karber, what brings you to my humble city?” The High Lord probed. Even Karber had to admit his acting was good. Had Lord Becket not treated him like a diseased ridden rat just a bit ago, he might have believed it, but he was a Dragon, and his race was the embodiment of proud, cunning and wise not to mention sheer destructive forces of nature. Who was he fooling. “Just passing through. Say, you haven't seen any suspicious individuals in your humble city, have you?” The high lord poured himself a drink and then poured one for Karber. “Yes, but the problem has been dealt with.” Becket sipped his wine. It was at that moment that both the noble knight and lord Becket noticed a cat hawking and heaving over a very expensive piece of furniture. Becket went pail “What... Get that filthy thing away from my magnificent chair. I spent a fortune on that.” His hands found their way to his face in an expression of abject horror which was probably the man’s first genuine expression in this miserable man’s existence. To Karber's delight Ross upchucked partially digested field mice chunks all over the high lord’s chair. Becket passed out. That was definitely genuine. “It was a pleasure. Really.” The dragon said laughing. “We'll see ourselves out.”
They left the city by way of dragon flight. Like Dauntless, Karber transformed outside the city after the city launched a thorough investigation, which included 8 hours of searching. Ultimately, Karber deduced that the demon master was no longer in the city with no spread of its taint, and Ross trailed Danny's scent out the other gate. Of course, Lord Becket didn't make things easy. A few times the guards would block areas off or deny Karber access, and after inducing enough fear aura at one of the guards that tried to steal Ross, had later divulged that they had orders to collect all cats that looked like Ross. No doubt it was the high lords attempt to kill the beasty that ruined his expensive chair. After Karber's apparent status was made known, no more open attempts to block their way or kidnap Ross was made. That did not stop them from trying however.
Once they reached the Edge of the king’s wood, Karber landed and lightly nudged Ross awake with a claw. Ross woke to the gigantic face of a dragon, and jumped with his fur coat poofed out. Karber took his human form laughing. Ross just scowled as hard as he could. Once the dragon stopped laughing at Ross's he said “Can you pick up their scents.” Ross glaring at Karber said. “Just hold on to your balls.” He jumped down, and after a minuet of rooting around like a dog, he found their scent again. The trail was headed towards the city in the distance. Hopefully no one saw the massive dragon flying their way. He didn't doubt for one second the dragon hoped they did, and sure enough Ross got his confirmation when he heard snickering coming from the dragon. “I found their trail. What now?” He said anger easing. “We sneak in of course.” Karber said with a grin. “Like that's possible now.” Ross complained.
Danny lye there thinking. He had everything he needed. The layout, control over the creatures, and now the routine of everyone that worked there minus this mysterious second and not to mention a possible run in with poachers, but they were rarely ever seen. He figured the best time would be at night after the cages were secured, and the facility's lights were off. He would go into mana fatigue causing the collar to fall off. How did he know? It was tested and perfected with Grisre to place the collar back on his neck. Then using his mana barrier, he'd slip between the bars where Danny would then open each cage. The mana barrier thing, like his tests with the collar was also perfected. Of course, his misfortunes with Morten was to blame for that brilliant idea, and the cages seemed to be linked, giving them some redundancy hence the mana barrier idea. Though, it turned out that opening the cages could be done from the outside. Once that was done, and assuming it was done with the right link, it would cut the magic circuit connecting the other cages. In short, opening the correct cage cuts its magic flow to the others cages making them normal cages. Then Danny would command his loyal Shadow Stelt to hunt down and kill Francis. Once that was done, all the other Beasts were to cause as much chaos as possible while him and Grisre escaped, and how his knew pack craved their captor’s flesh and blood. He knew this, because all the creatures currently caged along with Danny were abused in some way or another, and with Grisre's lack of control over him, they would lash out violently for escape. For, he too had a beastly mind trapped within. Danny made sure to pass all this information to Grisre. The die has been cast. Now they just had to see if lady luck had any objections.
