Chapter 4 – I’m going to kill you!

I stared at the frog's body for a while, trying to build up the courage to eat it. But when my stomach started growling again and I felt pain twisting inside it, I finally decided to do it.

I looked at the frog's completely deformed corpse and took a bite. The moment I tasted the meat, I almost spat it out. 'Bleh, just like Kumoko said! This tastes horrible!' I kept chewing, forcing myself not to throw up.

It was even hard to swallow.

'I forgot that eating monsters can give me skills. No wonder my mouth was burning a little while I was chewing its meat.' Then I started biting off pieces of the frog and eating them.

It was extremely unpleasant, but necessary.

When I finished eating the frog, I felt like vomiting. However, I didn't have time to rest.

  Hop! Hop! Hop!

I began to hear strange sounds coming from behind me, and before I could react, something came flying toward me. 'Shit! You bastard!' Something hit me directly in the face—at least half of it did.

I felt my face burning; the pain was intense.

'ARRRGGHHH! I'LL KILL YOU! I'LL KILL YOU!' While my face burned, I gred at that multicolored frog with pure hatred in my heart. Then I modified my speed and closed the distance in an instant.

In less than a second, I switched my edit to attack mode and struck it with my paw, hitting it right in the middle of its forehead.

The frog was preparing to infte its throat and attack me with its tongue, but before it could do that, its head was pierced by my paw and it died. I kept staring at its stupid tongue hanging out, then bit into it and started chewing.

'I'm going to eat you whole, you damned monster!'

After finishing the frog, I returned to my hiding pce and sealed the entrance with spider webs so no monsters could attack me. Then I y down to rest for a while.

  'My SP dropped a lot.'

Using this editing ability puts a huge strain on my body. My SP drains very quickly.

To be honest, I think my body is holding up better than I expected…

'Speaking of that, can I edit my SP?'

I deactivated the edit I had made to my strength and tried to edit my SP, but…

[ Error: Skill level too low. ]

'Well, at least that means I'll be able to edit my SP, HP, and MP in the future. When that happens… won't I become immortal?'

If I can add an infinite value to my HP, I'll become immortal!

Actually, can't I do that right now?

If I add a very high value to my defense, wouldn't I become invincible?

'Let's try adding 100,000 points to my defense first.'

[ Error: Skill level too low. ]

  'Eh?'

  Then maybe 50,000?

[ Error: Skill level too low. ]

  What about 20,000?

[ Error: Skill level too low. ]

'Wait, wait… I thought this was an editing skill? Shouldn't I be able to edit however I want? What if I try putting letters instead of numbers?'

  [ Error: Incompatible values. ]

'Huh. So this editing skill has a lot of limitations.'

I tried editing a skill's level before but couldn't because my skill level was too low. Now I need to figure out the maximum value I can add to my stats. 5,000? 10,000?

I tried editing my defense to 5,000—and it worked.

  'Great.'

  Then I tried 10,000.

[ Error: Skill level too low. ]

'So the limit is 5,000?' To be sure, I tried 6,000 and got the same error. So the maximum I can add to one of my stats is 5,000. Honestly, that's not a bad number. It's actually great.

Considering the limit will probably increase over time and I'll be able to edit multiple stats at once in the future, I might become invincible within a month at most.

'The real problem right now is that I can only edit one stat at a time.' If I raise my speed to 5,000 and try running around, my SP will probably drop to zero very quickly.

And I think that if I try an attack like the one I used to kill that frog while my strength is at 5,000, I'll probably reduce my HP to zero.

'But once I can edit my attack and defense at the same time, I'm going to have a lot of fun.'

Still, I probably shouldn't rely only on the edit system, even if it's the strongest thing I have.

I also want lots of skills.

'The problem is that I don't know exactly what I need to do to obtain certain skills.' I can buy them with points, but skills are expensive—especially the ones called the "Seven Deadly Sins."

I remember reading a spoiler saying that the greater the user's aptitude for a certain skill, the cheaper it becomes.

That's why Kumoko was able to buy the skill "Pride" for 100 points.

I opened the system and checked the skills.

Only to find the list… empty?

'Why is there nothing?' I asked myself mentally.

It didn't make sense, since Kumoko had just been born too. Don't tell me she's progressing even faster than in the original story and already bought that skill?

'If that's the case, I need to find her and take advantage of her "protagonist" status!'
