By the time Coronus set behind the mountains, cool tranquillity had settled on the valley once more. Its sole occupants, Vantaiga and Syffox, rested in silence in the fading light. They lay together on a small ridge that encompassed a large, circular pond.
The pond was created from Syffox’s newly formed crater. He’d spent the remainder of the day using his magic to dig a stream from the pond to the river that ran through Vantaiga’s valley. He sought to atone for his trick by turning the crater into a pool for the two to play and bathe in.
Vantaiga spent the afternoon watching his efforts with amusement. She could have easily dug the channel in a fraction of the time but instead preferred to watch him toil away at his redemption. Syffox could have completed his task sooner as well if not for Vantaiga occasionally teasing him by collapsing a bank or sending a wave of water into the small stream to wash away his work and occasionally Syffox himself. As for Syffox, he didn’t mind the interruptions or the setbacks. He was happy for the opportunity to amuse his Goddess.
The two were on a soft cover of dense mazus that Vantaiga had sprouted around the pool for them. They watched overhead as Silhlotte pull the shadow of the night across the sky. Syffox looked over the green carpet and broke the silence. “The slope of this ridge will be too dry for mazus, you know.”
Vantaiga snuggled in closer to him. “Don’t worry, my love. The ugly black hole you blasted into my quiet valley piled up nice, rich topsoil. The mazus will be fine.” Syffox didn’t agree but thought better than to object. Instead, he let the evening quiet resume engulfing them.
As the darkness deepened so did the silence. Normally, in times such as this, the silence would be a welcomed comfort to the couple, but Syffox could not find comfort in it. A turmoil of thoughts brewed in his mind. Should he discuss now when he should join with Vantaiga, or should he let her enjoy her moment of peace and quiet?
As the stars appeared overhead, there was a growing realisation that the moment would not last long. Vantaiga was long overdue to ascend to the heavens and formally introduce herself to the rest of the gods. His chance to discuss the matter would be delayed until her return, as would his chance to enjoy this brief break together. Time passes differently in the heavens than it does on Earth. What may seem like a moment on high can be months or even years for mortals below.
He decided he would let them both enjoy their moment together. He was not certain he was yet ready to confront Vantaiga’s divine radiance. And for an aged and patient person such as Syffox, it was not a big matter to wait a while longer. He also resisted bringing up the question of when they would merge because he had discovered something he once never thought possible: the answer might be “never.”

He dismissed the growing pessimism that threatened to darken the twinkling lights that outlined the thrones of the gods overhead. “You will have to see them soon, you know.”
Vantaiga drew in a breath as she scanned the stars. “I know. I just wanted to enjoy some time with you before going into their den.”
Syffox savoured the thought of her enjoying their time together. “It won’t be that bad. You’ve met all the gods before already. This is just a formality.”
Vantaiga retorted, “A formality where I take a piece of their heavens away from them.”
Syffox gave her a teasing nudge. “It’s not like that; they love to share.” Vantaiga’s only response was a disagreeing smirk as he continued, “Once it’s done with, it’s done. After that, if we stay out of their way, I’m sure they’ll stay out of ours. But we do need to be in their good favour; otherwise, they can give us no end of trouble.”
Vantaiga sighed. “Yeah, I know. I just hope it’ll be as easy as all that.” Wanting to change the subject, she rolled onto her side and began to run her fingers over his chest. “And what will you do while I am away?”
Syffox drew in an exhilarated breath at her touch. He let the feeling of her divinity settle over him before he spoke. “I thought I would begin a mission to the two cities at the edge of our forest.”
“That won’t go over well. We’ve kept to ourselves for so long. The people of the cities don’t trust us. They think we’re strange and wild.”
Syffox began stroking her arm to chase away the thought of how it would be easier if they had joined. “Perhaps they are right to think we’re wild. But we need to show them that we are not strange, and they can live peacefully with the forest. Otherwise, they will destroy it as they do everything else.”
Vantaiga held him more tightly. “I wish we could just stay here and not worry about any of them: gods or city people.”
“I do too, but you know we have to face the rest of the world eventually.”
“Just don’t let them destroy you. You’re worth more to me than all the forests.”
“As you are to me, my beautiful Goddess, but now you the forest. So, to protect you, I have to protect the forest. And gathering more followers will also make you stronger.” Another stray thought entered Syffox’s head: she wouldn’t need to be stronger if he joined her.
A shooting star broke their musings. Its beauty and briefness were both poetic and sad to them. “I’ll start with the east city, Derabel. They are a peaceful people, and I think they would like to know about the forest and what it has to offer them.”
“That leaves Kundz. They’re a warrior people. What do you plan to do about them?”
“Both cities are far apart, and both are a long way from here. I’ll think of something by then.”
Vantaiga squeezed him. “I’d rather not think of any of it. I’d rather enjoy our stars while we can.”
Syffox relished her embrace with a long inhale. “Me too, Goddess, while we can.”
