“System, reset class” I say after I finally wake up.
A voice echoes in my mind, “Resetting your Class will return all your stats to their base and remove all Class skills. Class skills are harder to relearn after removal. Would you still like to reset?”
“Yes” I answer without hesitation. A moment later my mind slows down and my body feels weaker. It takes a second to come back to reality after losing all my stats. Then I hear the system's voice again.
“Class reset. Skill slot unused. Would you like to keep a skill?”
I think for a moment and go through my old skills in my head before choosing [Calculator]. I'm confident in regaining all the skills I want, and while not the highest level, it is my favorite so I might as well keep it.
“Class available. Please choose a base skill for your class.”
I already know what I want my class to be but it's better to make sure. I look through all my skills and listen to my options I have available. None of them are out of the ordinary so I just go with my original plan.
“I'll take the class [Dark Mage]” I tell the system.
“Class [Dark Mage] acquired. [Dark Magic 10] moved to Class.”
“Great,” I whisper while smiling. “Now to the Hunters Guild for a guild card and some lodging, then some shopping for some gear.”
I walk around for a bit aimlessly before realizing I have no clue how to get to the Hunter's Guild. I ask some people for directions and after a bit, I decide to work on gaining some skills while I'm walking.
Since I can't work on any combat skills in town I decide to do the first one I learned, [Dark Touch].
I first let some mana flow from my hand while I watch for others around me. Then I form it into a triangle matrix, leaving the target point empty, selecting enchantment on the second, and buff on the third, before taking dark mana from my magic pool and letting it flow through the center. It's probably the easiest dark spell out there, but it's usually useless to mages like me. I can always replace it later though.
After letting enough mana flow through I touch my hand and it becomes covered in a gauntlet of darkness. I keep looking while I cast it again, and after a couple times I hear a system chime in my head.
“Skill [Dark Touch] learned. Would you like to add it to your Class or your General skills?”
“Class skills,” I say and pull up my system menu before selecting the new option and listening to the description.
“Dark Touch 1: Darkness encompasses an object or limb and imbues an attack with the darkness effect as well as increasing damage to the target. Damage scales with level. School: Dark, Enchanting (Minor)”
While I keep track of my directions I think of what I should do with my last remaining general skill slot. There are a lot of skills that I could use and many options that could benefit me personally. A skill to help my team would be nice but since I can't expect to gain one right away it'd be better to increase my personal power.
As I go through all sorts of skills I could gain quickly through my head, I eventually arrive at the Hunters Guild. I'm a bit nervous about this, but I still think it's the right choice. After a moment of hesitation I walk in and look around. I can see a group of people who seem to be fidgeting nervously so I stand in line behind them and listen to the attendant. After confirming I'm in the line for new Hunters, I continue going through my mind on skills to choose as I wait.
Thinking of it, [Echolocation] is my most important skill, so it'd be best to increase its capabilities. As such I have three skills to choose from, [Sound Magic], [Sense Magic], and [Enhanced Hearing].
The first I eliminate is [Sense Magic]. It's a really interesting school of magic, but it's made for scholars, more than Hunters, and that isn't my chosen profession. Following which I eliminate [Enhanced Hearing]. It's useful, but a lot more niche than pure magic, and that can replicate it. It'll also limit my future class options. Which leaves [Sound Magic] as my choice.
It's been a bit since I learned a Magic skill, so I go through the steps needed. First, I need to understand the skill. Then I need to work with it to expand an effect, and work against it to hamper an effect, showing my mastery and knowledge.
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Sound is a subcategory of wind magic, caused by sound moving through the air. Since it's obvious to move air, and will rile up the more experienced Hunters, I go for stopping it at the source, me.
First I form a triangle spell matrix with my mana, the target point will be me, and the type point will be enchantment, since I'm familiar with it. Then, I begin tapping my foot quietly as I form the third point. It'll be more complex since I'm not sure what to put there, so I push mana through my matrix while thinking of increasing the sound of my steps and changing parts of my effect point until it feels right. After a bit of fiddling, my tapping gets a bit louder before I cut off the flow of mana. After that, I work on changing the last point to make it quieter, but before I finish I’m called up by the attendant for my turn.
“Hello, are you here to register as a Hunter?” She asks with a cheery voice.
“Yes, I am,” I reply, still fiddling with my spell matrix.
“Could you please fill out this paperwork then. After that we'll send you to be tested for a rank following which we'll give you a corresponding guild card for identification.” She repeats without a single thought.
I grab the pen and go to start writing before I pause and my spell matrix breaks. I chuckle nervously before looking at her and shyly asking, “Could you help me? I never learned how to read or write.”
She looks at me a bit taken aback before she asks a question without thinking.
“How could you not know how to read? School is free for everyone and really easy to sign up for. If you need help I could-” she stops talking after I raise my hand.
“I'm afraid I can't learn even if I wanted to, considering that I can't see,” I answer her question.
She stutters in shock for a second before taking a concerned tone. “Are you sure you should be doing this? Fighting monsters is dangerous and losing one of your 5 senses could be the difference between life and death.”
“I'm sure. I have the [Echolocation] skill and I've been blind all my life, so it's been fine tuned for detecting anything that moves.” I respond. “I also know that you can't stop people from applying to become Hunters or taking missions so could you please help me fill out this paperwork?” I ask in the most business-like voice I can muster.
She sighs before asking me questions and filling out the paperwork for me. Since answering questions is easy I go back to fiddling with my spell matrix until it finally locks in place. After holding it in place for a few seconds I hear a system message.
“Skill [Sound Magic] learned. Would you like to add it to General Skills?”
I think yes really hard before opening up my system menu and selecting my new skill.
“Sound Magic 1: Gives knowledge of spells using sound mana. Also increases power and efficiency of spells and skills using sound mana, as well as adding a mana pool for sound mana. Every aspect of this skill increases with level."
With that I finish answering the rest of the questions and head over to the training center to get assigned a rank. When I get there, I see a tall and burly man holding a Greatsword like it's a dagger. The attendant walks up to him and informs him of my situation before he comes talking to me.
He walks up and says in a deep voice, “So kid, you wanna be a Hunter? You got guts.” He says with a smile as he raises his sword “But are you ready to die for it?” He yells as he swings his sword at me. I quickly form a matrix with the target point as forward, the type point as projectile, and the effect point as damage before reaching my arm over the arc of his sword at the last second and firing a [Dark Blast] at him. It flies straight and hits him in the chest causing him to laugh as his sword nicks my throat.
“You really do have guts kid. I'll go a little easier on you now so show me what you've got.” He says before putting his sword away and leaning into a brawling stance. I copy him before forming a square matrix. The target point I leave empty, following the type point with enchantment and the effect point which I put buff. And the fourth point I use for duration I put a short time length before feeding it enough wind mana to power a 20% speed increase for a 5 minutes before doing the same for dark mana, instead increasing physical instead of speed for 4 minutes. I stand there and analyze my opponent, looking for any openings and weak spots I could see before charging in with my fists covered in darkness.
The moment I enter his range he jabs at me. I barely manage to dodge to the side before entering his guard and slamming my fist against his chest. He goes to grapple me to his chest but I sink under his arms before spinning around toward his back while punching his left leg repeatedly, watching the darkness from my spell sink in. Next I jump up behind him and try to dig my fingers into his eyes but before I even get a proper hold he grabs me and flings me forward. Before I crash on the ground I use my wings to right myself and stumble onto my feet before crafting another [Dark Blast] matrix and firing it off while I work on a [Wind Blast], since my dark mana is running low. As I finish my matrix, the instructor reaches me before swinging at me with a hook that I duck under before he throws three jabs at me in quick succession. The first I dodge and the second misses because [Wind Blast] moves it just out of the way but the third is squared perfectly where I'm standing. Since I cant dodge it I raise my arms to block it before I get thrown into the wall from the force of his punch.
I land on the ground and he walks up to me before giving me a hand. A grab it and unravel my buffs as he begins talking. “You're quite fast and you're good at those spells, but your physical power isn't that strong. I'd stay in the back line for now and focus on spell casting for now. Other than that, I'd say you're pretty good. Solidly in Bronze Rank,” he states before clapping a hand over my shoulder. “If you'd ever like to use a weapon though I'd be more than happy to teach you some swordplay. With those buffs of yours, you'd be quite good I'm sure.”
“Apologies, but I'd like to leave tomorrow. I heard there's a caravan heading west that I plan to be on,” I nod to him.
“Ah, sad to hear. We could always use more Hunters here. But alas that's not how it is. Good luck finding your equipment. And I'll tell the lass your rank. Now get out. I'll be off tending to more permanent members.” He says before walking off.
