Chapter 16 – Distrust – Fallback

After Marcus recovered himself from the scene and the shock of taking a life for the first time.

He come back and observed the rest of the battle.

More bandits showed up, but they were stopped by the guards skilfully and engaged in small skirmishes.

Right now, the guards stood behind their shields and carriages to not get hit by the arrows that are shoot to them.

Caravan Guard, who killed the bandit, comes to the side of Marcus.

"I did not know you were a mage..."

Marcus said nothing about his identity as a mage and asked, changing the subject.

"How much more do you think they would send?"

"Are they going to keep fighting?"

Caravan Guard looked and then said.

"This is not a usual bandit ambush."

"It is more pnned, and the manpower behind it more than usual."

He then looked at the bandit side, where he can easily see several of them and said.

"I believe they can not pass the guards in one to two hours."

  "They will fall back."

"But it does not mean they stop taking more action. They may regroup and then attack at a ter time, in the night most likely."

  Marcus nodded.

"It seems like even the bandits are smarter compared to the game when they are not controlled by the computer."

"I guess traveling alone is safer than traveling with a huge group, as it takes much attention."

The caravan guard looked at Marcus for a moment and then said.

"I advise you to not make it well known that you are a mage."

"People of Skyrim are distrustful of the mages and do not like them."

"I heard that you were Alchemist, stay with that, Alchemist are healers and well-liked and respected."

Marcus smiled and nodde. Of course he knew that Skyrim and it is people never liked the mages.

  "Thank you for the advice."

While, at the same time, a caravan guard held the swinging arm of a bandit and side-stepped.

With a overhand ssh with it is sword, he cut the arm of bandit and bandit dropped dead.

As he was about to plead for mercy, Caravan Guard sshed and cut the throat of it, not separating the head but enough to crush the windpipe and open a deep line of cut that blood gushed out like a river.

The small skirmishes continued thirty more minutes. Noticing that they are not able to pass the caravan guards and the people that are helping them, the bandits backed down and stopped attacking.

Caravan Master and second in command, Caravan Guard Captain, come side by side.

"Mister Caravan Master Maxfer, and Caravan Guard Captain, Oeni, we thank you from our depths of heart." said one of Argus, who was a merchant knew how to speak compared to the others.

"If not for your courage and courage of your men also, we would be dead and all of our belongings would be taken." Argis kept on complimenting.

Caravan Master Maxfer and Oenaline, the guard captain, looked at him and then nodded.

Marcus, come to the side of Maxfer and Oeni.

  Maxfer spoke.

"I am Maxfer as you heard. You met with Oeni at the back."

"It was great that you notified everyone that they were attacking from the back. It would be pretty bad if we did not send support to the back."

  Marcus nodded.

  "It is nothing."

Maxfer put his hand on the shoulder of Marcus and took him to the side, away from the others, who were at the sides of the carriage talking about the bandits and sharing their anxiousness and courage.

"I heard you are a mage and burned one of the bandits."

Marcus nodded. He did not confirm it out loud as he saw how Maxfer was whispering.

"Next time, please do kill the man."

"We have no mercy to the bandits as they are scum of this world and capable of most evil heinous acts..."

"But still, we are not them, and even in a battle, we would like to give them a swift deal."

"Torturing people just for fun and with no real reason behind of it, is not good."

  Marcus listened and then added.

"I was wrong on that." he added. This was better than saying that he was not used to burning people alive and the plead of the man, the smell, the scene shocked him so much that he throw up.

He also understood that Onei did not talk about him throwing up, which was important.

  Maxfer smiled.

"In the end, I am happy that you are a mage and we are traveling with you."

"But the people in the other carriages may not like it."

"If they were to form a group and demand that they think you are evil, and as a mage, they don't want you."

"I have no other choice but to pay your money back to you and let you go travel all alone in the first stop."

Marcus did not expect such a change.

He knew that people of Skyrim did not like mages but they should not dumb enough to ask a mage to leave them.

  "I get it."

  "Thank you for the advices."

Marcus then left and went back to his carriage.

As he entered, he noticed that Argus and his family were already inside. Not much time ter, the carriage and the caravan continued on their way.

They wanted to reach safe ground to camp for the night to continue. It would be pretty bad if they attacked again in the open.
