68 Heart Street

The doors open to the cell, soldiers march up and pull the hag up, "Jack. Please say it isn't true." I nod towards the door, "Take her." She shouts, "Jack! He's going to kill you!" I laugh, "Not if I comply. It's a safer life." She jerks towards me, spits on me and I take a step back. She shouts as they drag her out the room, "You're a good kid! Please don't do this!" I rub against Diesel's dog tags, this jacket he gave me. He must be rolling in his grave right now. I start walking to Rose's room, Carter steps out of it. He waves at me and my heart skips a beat as he marches away. He looks back and I start walking towards her door. I turn and gulp.

I walk in and a wave of relief washes over me as she glares at me with tears in her eyes, "What is wrong with you?" I tilt my head, "You promised him you'd-" She shudders, my jaw drops, "Oh my god! You're sick!" I growl, "You're so stuck up!" She smiles, "I'm glad you feel miserable, Jack." I lean in and sneer, "The feeling's mutual." She stands up and walks out with her head held high. I sigh and sit down in her chair, kick up my feet. I tap the dog tags three times with my thumb. The slightest twitch comes from my eyes, I smile and huff out air out my nose.

I swing my feet down and march out the room. As I march outside the facility, Carter shouts above the rain, "What took you so long!?" I shout back, "I got lost in thought." He leads me into a Jeep and I get in. He closes the door. "I told her all the things we'll do to her." I shrug, "She might kill herself." He holds out a piece of film. Rose is wrapped in a straitjacket with a rag in her mouth. "Can't even bite her tongue." I can feel him look down, then back up towards my head, I close my legs. He laughs, "What is it?" He waves, "Oh, nothing." We stop and get out, Rose tries to run as soldier's shout, they grab her as a large ship emerges from the water. "Hope you aren't afraid of getting wet." I shake my head. "Good kid."

I step aboard the floating ramp and look back at Kinelt's lights. Dark, gloomy homes with candles lighting most of them. The ramp starts closing as my eyes twitch again. Not long now. The ramp shuts.

Scott opens a crate, El walks in with keys and points, "That's all I've got for you." He yanks out a grenade launcher, he smiles wide with it, like he can do some damage with it. I hope I didn't make a mistake. Jess studies old maps as Thadius grabs as many guns as he can carry. El sighs, "There's a stolen Jeep in the Garage. Never come back here, any of you." Puppers merges four assault rifles into his blackened body and barks twice. His fur changes out magazines. Thadius and I look at each other. "We need to kill this thing." I shake my head, "We clearly need him,- Who's a good boy?" I reach my hand out, he snarls at me as the bolts cock back. His fur catches the bullets that fly out. His hairs pull bullets from the crate into itself. Scott straps a bunch of grenade shells around a belt. Thadius closes his fist as metal spreads onto it. He tuts at how slow it all is.

Rose's muffled screams sound out towards me as Mama sits frowning, tapping the ground with her finger. Carter smiles at the giant underground structure. "Wow. They even waterproofed this place. I mean, not a single drop of water. O'Malley is annoying, but he sure does great work." I scratch my head, "What's the plan?" He smiles, "We seal off any possible entrance, but ours." I nod, "Now all you need to do, is when the bastards you called friends come in, kill them." I tilt my head, "Are you sure they'll even come?" He grabs my shoulder, "Of course they will." Soldiers fan out, searching for something. I gulp as I remember, "If you choose to get in my way, I will do worse than they ever did." An intense dread washes over me, but I can't dare react to it. He'll kill me. At the same time, I see Diesel's stern face. His final moments, Jean's rare smile.

I get familiar where everything is in this large space, getting closer to a better position to fire from. Diesel would kill me if I ever did this. This is all wrong. But what choice do I have? His face when he fought, Diesel never cared about his life. I look over a ledge and the immediate thought comes to mind, I'd definitely die if I fell. Rose shouts and acts like I'm useless. So much of what I am is missing and I'm itching to hit myself in hopes it comes back to me. All I've got is protecting what little I can with a gun, killing snipers, popping heads back on Lady Liberty.

I clench my fists and clench my teeth. That's all I know. I step away from the ledge and march towards the furthest corner, away from everyone. As I find it, a rifle lies on the ground with plenty of ammunition. I look at Mama without it, she's already looking my way. She waves with a worried look, Rose is bound to a chair in her straitjacket and gag. I grab my heart and sharply breathe in, I look at Carter frowning, looking around frantically. He's using them all to look for something. They feel the walls and random furniture as I growl and take aim at Carter's head. My finger won't pull the trigger.

My eyes pulse as crackling comes from behind me. Mama squints at me, then Carter looks at me. I look behind me and I see myself up close, glowing green eyes. The little shards of glass floated out the pouch I put them in. They follow my eyes, exactly where I'm looking. Carter bolts towards me as I look down at the pouch, the little shards zoom down into my pocket. Carter's footsteps announce his arrival, "All set up?" I nod as my eye twitches, "Yeah." He drops something big, "Stay here, all the water and food you need is right here. Sleeping bag too." I look back at Mama and Rose being carted off. He zooms away, hopping from ledges and the ground with tremendous speed. How did we ever get away from him? He could've killed us back at Diesel's Farm. You know what? It doesn't matter. All I know is-

As soon as I growl, the glass zooms from my pocket. You should have.

Rose squints at the shiny dust scattered in the air, Mama looks up at it too, Jack glares at me, I grab at my chest and breathe heavily. "What the-?" Everyone stares up, I look up at the rainy and shining sky, thousands of lights, matching the city's light. One particle floats close, I touch it and a sharp pain shoots from my hand, I pull it away as the dust disappears. Scott marches towards the shoreline with a grenade launcher in his arms, Thadius looks to me, five assault rifles over his wide shoulders, boxes of ammo in his giant arms. Puppers pants with a helmet strapped to it's head, four guns in it's black fur. Jess starts following them with crossed arms. I lift the gun strap's weight off my shoulder for a second. We're coming for you guys.
