The empire thrived on power struggles, and Kael had made himself the most dangerous pyer in the game. His enemies thought they had him cornered, but they had fallen into the trap he had carefully set.
Alistair, the Margrave, and their allies were moving in the shadows, thinking they were orchestrating his downfall. Kael let them. He allowed their whispers to spread, their schemes to take form, and their arrogance to blind them to the inevitable.
Tonight, he would take the next step.
The pace halls were as grand as ever, but the tension in the air was palpable. A secret meeting had been arranged in the Emperor’s private council chamber—one that only a select few had been invited to. Kael walked in, his steps slow and deliberate, eyes sharp as he scanned the room.
The Emperor sat at the head of a long obsidian table, his expression unreadable. The most powerful nobles and military leaders were seated around him—Queen Seraphina included.
Alistair was there. So was the Margrave.
Kael took his seat with the confidence of a man who had already won.
The Emperor’s voice broke the silence. "Duke Kael, it seems your rise has drawn considerable… discussion."
Kael smiled slightly. "Power does that, Your Majesty. Those without it fear those who wield it."
Alistair leaned forward, his tone polite but ced with venom. "You speak of power as if it belongs to you alone, Duke. But power in the empire is shared, banced. No one man should upset that bance."
Kael met his gaze, his smile never faltering. "A bance that serves the weak, not the empire. Tell me, Duke Alistair, are you afraid that I might tip the scales?"
The Margrave scoffed. "Arrogance will be your downfall, boy. You may have the Queen’s favor, but this empire does not bow to a single man’s ambition."
Kael chuckled softly, but his eyes held nothing but cold calcution. "No, it bows to strength. And that is why we are here, aren’t we? Because strength is shifting, and some find that… uncomfortable."
The Emperor watched with mild amusement. He enjoyed these battles of wit and power, letting his nobles fight among themselves while he remained above them. But Kael wasn’t here just to py the game. He was here to take control of it.
Queen Seraphina finally spoke. "Enough of these petty words. We are here to discuss the empire’s future. And I believe Duke Kael has something… enlightening to share."
Kael leaned forward, csping his hands together. "Indeed. While my esteemed peers plot in the dark, I have been securing something far more valuable than their whispers—loyalty."
The room grew silent.
Kael continued, his voice smooth yet commanding. "I have spent the st month gathering the support of the empire’s border generals. The same generals your factions have ignored for years. The same generals who protect your nds while you scheme for power."
Alistair’s face darkened. "You dare to speak of military matters as if you control them?"
Kael smirked. "I don’t need to control them. I just needed them to see the truth. That the empire is rotting from within. That while you py at politics, the real threats grow stronger."
The Emperor’s gaze sharpened. "And what truth have you shown them, Duke Kael?"
Kael met his eyes without hesitation. "That a divided empire will fall. That power should not be held by those too weak to wield it. That I, unlike my honorable peers here, am willing to do what is necessary to secure this empire’s future."
Silence.
Alistair’s hands curled into fists. The Margrave looked ready to snap.
Seraphina, however, smiled.
Kael had just decred war—not in blood, but in power. He had presented himself as the true protector of the empire, while making Alistair and his allies look like selfish cowards.
The Emperor finally spoke, his voice calm yet carrying immense weight.
"You speak boldly, Duke Kael. But bold words require bold action. What is it you seek?"
Kael stood, his presence filling the room.
"I seek order. I seek an empire that is not ruled by outdated traditions and spineless nobles. I seek to reshape the future with strength."
His next words sent a shock through the room.
"I seek to be Chancellor of the Empire."
The highest political position beneath the Emperor himself. A role that controlled ws, military strategy, and governance. A role that would pce him above Alistair, above the Margrave, above almost everyone.
The Margrave smmed his fist on the table. "You overstep, Kael!"
Kael didn’t even gnce at him. His eyes remained locked on the Emperor.
For a long moment, the Emperor was silent. Then, he smiled ever so slightly.
"Very well."
Alistair and the Margrave stiffened. "Your Majesty—!"
The Emperor raised a hand, silencing them. "Duke Kael has proven himself capable. If he can bring stability, then let him. The empire rewards those who show strength."
Kael bowed slightly. "A wise decision, Your Majesty."
The Emperor’s gaze turned to the others. "Of course, power must still be tested. You will have until the next full moon to prove that your vision for the empire is the correct one, Duke Kael. If you fail, your enemies will have every right to… remove you."
Kael chuckled. "Then I shall not fail."
The meeting ended.
As Kael walked out, Seraphina stepped beside him. "That was dangerous," she murmured.
Kael smirked. "Power always is."
She studied him for a moment, then smiled. "You continue to intrigue me, Kael. But let’s see if you can survive what comes next."
Kael didn’t need to see what came next.
He had already pnned for it.
