The gentle rustling of leaves filled the quiet space of Echofern Town’s forested outskirts. The te afternoon sun cast golden hues across the canopy, light filtering through the trees and painting dappled shadows onto the soft earth. Nina took a deep breath, steadying herself.
This was it.
She turned the small velvet box over in her hands, feeling the weight of it, the promise it held. After years of battles, of standing at the pinnacle as Champion, she was finally ready to put competition behind her and focus on something greater: a life with Roxy.
She gnced toward the clearing ahead, where Roxy sat on a low wooden bench, absentmindedly tossing berries to a small group of Pokémon.
Her Sylveon sat curled by her feet, while a Swablu flitted about in the low branches above.
Roxy’s carefree ughter rang through the air as her Pokémon scrambled for the treats, utterly unaware of the storm brewing in Nina’s mind.
The moment was perfect. Until it wasn’t.
A loud, hurried set of footsteps broke through the tranquility, and Nina turned in time to see Elliot, Roxy’s father, hurrying toward them. His normally proud, commanding presence was diminished, his steps uneven, his breath coming in short bursts. Roxy was on her feet in an instant, rushing to his side.
“Dad?” she gasped, steadying him by the arm. “What happened?”
Elliot exhaled heavily. “It’s my health,” he admitted, shaking his head.
“Doctor says I have to step down from the Gym immediately. I can’t battle, not like this.”
Nina’s heart clenched as she watched Roxy’s expression shift from concern to realization.
The Echofern Gym had been in Roxy's family for decades.
It was more than just a Gym; it was a symbol of the town’s spirit, its connection to nature and and determination.
“Roxy,” Elliot continued, pcing a firm hand on his daughter’s shoulder, “I need you to take over.”
Silence.
Nina could see Roxy’s thoughts racing behind her eyes.
The problem was clear Roxy was a god awful battler.
She loved Pokémon, loved caring for them, but battling? Strategy? Reading an opponent? It had never been her strong suit.
“Dad, I ”
“I know,”
Elliot interrupted gently.
“I know it’s not your thing. But the gym needs a leader, and I can’t trust just anyone to take over. I need family.”
Roxy swallowed, her gaze darting to Nina. Then, as if an idea struck her like a stray Thunderbolt, she turned fully to her.
“What if Nina did it?”
Nina blinked. “Wait, what?”
Roxy grabbed Nina’s hands, squeezing them tightly.
“Think about it. You’re already an amazing trainer, and it’s just for a bit. Just until Dad gets better.”
“Roxy, I'm retired from battling”
Nina reminded her, gesturing helplessly.
“I stepped away from all of this, and now you want me to be a Gym Leader?”
“I know, I know,” Roxy said quickly.
“But it’s not like competing in the League, right? It’s just Gym battles! You’d be amazing, and it would take the pressure off my dad while he recovers.”
Nina hesitated, torn between her love for Roxy and the deep exhaustion she had finally begun to shake after years of relentless battles.
She had pnned a new life. A peaceful one
. A life where she could finally focus on love, on happiness, on moving forward.
Then Roxy gave her the look the wide-eyed, hopeful stare that had always managed to crack through Nina’s best defenses. And then, the final blow:
“Well I’ll only marry you if you go undefeated while you’re Gym Leader.”
Nina’s brain screeched to a halt.
“Excuse me?”
Roxy grinned mischievously.
“You want to marry me, right? Well, prove you’re as strong as you say you are. If you make it through the whole time without losing a single match, I’ll marry you the second my dad is better.”
Nina’s jaw dropped.
She looked to Elliot, expecting some kind of fatherly objection, but to her horror, the man nodded approvingly.
“Oh, come on!” Nina groaned. “This is emotional bckmail!”
“Think of it as a challenge,” Roxy teased. “You love challenges.”
Nina groaned again, running a hand through her long, dark hair.
She had been ready for one life-changing moment today. She had not expected this.
But as she looked at Roxy her wild, reckless, impossible Roxy she knew she wasn’t saying no.
“Fine,” she sighed. “I’ll do it.”
Roxy cheered, throwing her arms around Nina, nearly knocking her over.
Sylveon yipped excitedly, running circles around them.
Elliot chuckled, but there was relief in his eyes.
This wasn’t the proposal Nina had pnned.
And so, the reluctant champion’s new battle began not for a trophy, not for a title, but for love.
