A unique energy signature pulsed throughout the western quadrant of the Riftwood. Kain detected a new electromagnetic pattern right away which stood out from any other part of the dungeon they had explored. The distinct patterns of the ambient charge activated his Lightning Dao to produce cautious resonant vibrations.
"The trees are different here," Lyra whispered as she examined their surroundings.
She wasn't wrong. The vegetation appeared to have undergone intentional modifications rather than random natural changes. The trees possessed taller heights and broader trunks which featured a silvery-blue bark spiraling upward in geometric formations. Perfect symmetrical formations of leaves clung to the trees while their edges featured bioluminescent veins that pulsed together in a synchronized rhythm.
"It's beautiful," Lyra continued, reaching out to touch a low-hanging branch. "Almost reminds me of the forests I visited in Queensland years ago. My aunt lived there—we spent a week hiking through nature preserves."
Kain only half-listened as his hunter sense enabled him to explore strange electrical signals around him. Something wasn't right. The ambient energy showed signs of intentional control instead of natural behavior, suggesting someone orchestrated the ecosystem's patterns.
His eyes narrowed as he scanned the canopy above. "Don't touch anything," he warned, "this area feels... orchestrated."
[Environment Detected: Eucalyptus Riftgrove]
The System notification confirmed his suspicions. The change here resulted from targeted evolution, which created a designed ecosystem inside the dungeon's broader structure.
The subtle sound above him suggested neither wind nor random debris due to its controlled and deliberate nature. Kain halted his movement while his hand lifted gradually to signal Lyra to cease her advance.
"Get down," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Slowly. Don't make any sudden movements."
Lyra's Blade Dao training had already heightened her instincts for danger—she responded immediately. "What is it?" Her breath escaped her lips while her hand automatically shifted to grasp the tusk-blade at her hip.
"Movement in the trees," Kain replied, his gaze locked on a shadowy mass about fifteen meters above them. "Large. Deliberate."
When he adjusted to the filtered light through the canopy, his sight revealed a solid form—a large muscular creature holding onto the branch with unusually long limbs.
The thick mottled fur on its body featured elements resembling the tree bark which offered a near-perfect natural camouflage except to those like Kain who possessed enhanced vision.
The animal moved and exposed more of its body to view. Underneath its fur, bioluminescent patterns throbbed in rhythmic patterns that the surrounding flora seemed to respond to with their own patterns of response. The face of the creature maintained its Earthly origins but had evolved into a predatory form with a flattened muzzle featuring jagged teeth, replacing old herbivore molars.
[Eucalypt Stalker - Level 8]
The Integration process led to koalas evolving into territorial arboreal predators. Through metabolic enhancement their digestive system converted former dietary toxins into potent venom. Their camouflaged exterior lead to ambush tactics that make them nearly invisible until they attack
"A koala?" Lyra spotted the creature as it shifted and expressed her disbelief with a soft whisper. "But they're supposed to be harmless. Sleepy little fluffballs that just munch leaves all day."
Kain's jaw tightened. "Not anymore. The Integration doesn't preserve—it transforms." He watched how the creature moved and recognized its unnatural smoothness and tactical positioning. "Those were koalas. These nasty-looking things are Eucalypt Stalkers. And they are not the fucking same."
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
"Ok, Kain, I'll try my best to be scared of the oversized koalas," Lyra replied with a chuckle.
Kain ignored Lyra's sarcasm and sent out his [Hunter's Sense] electromagnetic pulses through the trees, uncovering three additional nearby signatures that had been tactically positioned to indicate coordinated hunting behavior.
"There are at least four," he murmured, his mind racing through combat scenarios. "They've surrounded us. Classic ambush formation."
Lyra stiffened alongside him as she abandoned her disbelief while fully grasping the severity of their current predicament. "What's the play here?"
A glimmer of light from deeper within the grove interrupted Kain's tactical assessment. Spherical objects glowed with a warm golden light among blue-tinted leaves while hanging from specialized branches fifty meters away.
Riftfruit Cluster
[F-Rank Power Nexus]
[Properties: Enhanced Energy Absorption, Accelerated Dao Development, Advanced Attribute Distribution]
Kain observed the golden glow from the Riftfruit pulse through the eucalyptus branches while each movement generated ripples within the ambient energy field which his Lightning Dao detected with remarkable precision.
The vision caused his mind to instantly connect with a memory from his initial day at the Riftwood Dungeon.
Riftfruit. The System notification had mentioned them specifically when he first entered this place: Claiming heavily disputed resources enables individuals to gain significant power. Acquiring these resources would likely be transformative just as the Sap Vein he found before had been.
"We need to get to those fruits," Kain decided, the tactical opportunity overriding his cautious instincts. "They're high-value resources—probably why these Stalkers are guarding this area so aggressively."
Guided by his direction of view, Lyra identified the golden light hidden in the leaves. "So what's the plan? Distraction? Stealth? Please don't say 'frontal assault'."
"We split their attention," Kain replied, analyzing the positioning of the Stalkers. "I'll use Chain Lightning to hit the two on the left simultaneously. The electrical discharge should disorient them temporarily. You circle right, using the tree trunks as cover. When they focus on me, you make for the fruit."
"And if more show up?" Lyra traced the outline of her tusk-blade with her fingertips while pressing for information.
"Then we adapt," Kain answered simply. "Stay aware. These creatures have System enhancements which make them apex predators that defend their domains with intelligence. Expect intelligence behind their attacks."
A faint rustling above made them both look up—the first Stalker had begun moving, repositioning itself for a better striking angle. Its movements were deliberate, calculated, betraying an unsettling intelligence behind its glowing eyes.
"Wait for my signal," Kain instructed, electricity already beginning to gather around his fingertips as he prepared his [Chain Lightning] skill.
"And Lyra?"
"Yeah?"
"These aren't your world's koalas. Don't hesitate because they look familiar. This new world turns familiarity into a fatal danger."
She gave a tight-lipped nod while her face transformed into a mask of concentrated resolve. The weapon's blade emitted a faint glow as Lyra infused it with her Blade Dao which transformed the curved edge into a deadly force with golden energy.
Their recent battles together led to a consolidated plan with unspoken coordination between them. Kain approached the creatures head-on and captivated their attention by using his spectacular area-effect powers.
Lyra took advantage of the diversion to move closer to their target because her Primal affinity allowed her to move through the altered ecosystem with ease.
Their plan to act was suddenly revoked by an unexpected force taking control.
The branch above them shattered with a loud crack as the biggest Stalker began its downward dive with precision. The creature slammed into the ground with tremendous force, creating a small crater and dismantling the earth and vegetation around it.
The creature extended to its full size which resembled a chimpanzee but featured a more robust body where Integration-enhanced muscles and spine protrusions made its shoulders and spine stand out.
The transformation became more horrifying when viewed up close. A gentle herbivore had transformed into a terrifying embodiment of accelerated evolution.
Powerful forearms wielded six-inch-long claws, which released a sizzling green ooze upon contact with the ground. Natural armor had developed in bark-like plates across its back and chest, displaying bioluminescent patterns matching those of the nearby trees.
The creature's facial structure initiated the strongest instinctual terror. The formerly rounded features had transformed into a deadly predator's snout equipped with teeth arranged for tearing flesh. The creature's amber eyes displayed not an unintelligent animal rage but a deliberate territorial aggression typical of a top-level predator.
The Stalker turned its head to evaluate them before emitting a sound outside the capability of any real koala—a booming roar with harmonic frequencies engineered to disrupt a mammal's nervous system.
The sound assault caused Lyra to lose her balance for a brief instant. The vibration penetrated Kain’s inner ear and disrupted his spatial awareness.
A sound-based attack. Through technological enhancement The System transformed their natural sounds into deadly weapons. Time seemed to slow down for a moment.
Lyra issued her warning "Kain—" at the exact moment the beast hurled itself at them, moving faster than he could have anticipated.
Kain's combat instincts kicked in, and his perception of time accelerated. Electric currents flowed through his neural network, resulting in his brain functions and muscle responses operating at superhuman levels. With precise movement, he dodged the first attack while narrowly escaping the deadly claws that could have shattered his chest.
The Stalker showed rapid reflexes while turning swiftly to face him again. Kain saw from its eyes that the creature possessed an advanced intelligence beyond mere animal instinct because the System had been actively rewiring it to evolve its mental capacities in tandem with its physical enhancements.
"Now!" Kain yelled at Lyra while his arms became encased in a crackling electric field as he charged his body for a full-power strike. "Go for the fruit!"
The Stalker turned its head toward Lyra when she moved right, splitting its predatory focus between them. It was all the opening Kain needed.
"Let's test this living weapon," he muttered, channeling his Lightning Dao into a configuration he'd been theorizing since their last battle.
Pure energy formed crackling gauntlets around his forearms.
