In his travels, Jonathan had crossed a huge threshold, that of a hundred thousand points of Stamina. It was such a monumental difference to when he had first stepped foot in Telvaria that it hardly seemed real. There it was though, as clear as day. Damn, I really have grown a lot.
The party was camped out near a local monster den, with some of the weaker members leveling within its confines. A slot canyon had provided a natural breeding ground for a group of reptilian monstrosities that looked more like fusions of snakes and centipedes than anything else. Truly disgusting beings, the way that they moved made Jonathan want to burn them out of existence with the Void. In fact, he had already done so a few times.
He had also had the opportunity to get to know Jarob. The Uthraki was a bit reserved at times, meditating alone whenever the group stopped, but he had become a bit more reticent over time. Jonathan and Edgar enjoyed discussing the state of the realm with their guide, interested in the Merchant Queen.
Firstly, the woman’s real name had been lost to most of the realm’s Uthraki, by her own desire, but her title was good enough for everyone to use. She needed no other appellation, after all. It described the majority of her existence. Her rule had been long, but not on the scale of the realm. The woman had come to power about a millenia ago, and prolonged her life with all sorts of relics and natural treasures sourced from the Universal Trading Hub. Rumor had it that she was saving up for a wider scale mana enhancement array, so that more of her followers, and herself, could ascend to Tier 5. It was an intriguing goal, and one that would turn the realm upside down if it ever came to fruition.
Mostly, though, the goods from the Trading Hub were used to further the civilization of the Uthraki who also called the realm home. The large, well appointed cities that filled the land were the fruits of their labors, built from the proceeds from their Mandrake farming empire. There were all manner of industries in the third realm of Tartarus, but that was chief among them. Everyone wanted to have the comfort of their favorite alcoholic beverages, from the lowliest Tier 1s to demigods. For that to happen, Mandrakes were the easiest way.
With the sheer scale of the operation, so many Leviathan Marks passed into the coffers of the layer of Tartarus that it would have made Granath’s fortune look like the meager savings of a pauper.
Jarob seemed to be quite a fan of the Queen, going so far as to smile every time he said her name. Apparently, the Uthraki scout had been born with a rare condition, one where he had difficulty controlling mana. It would have been near debilitating normally, but given his uncle’s status as a war hero, the Merchant Queen was generous enough to give him medicine for his disease, curing him.
There even was some form of universal healthcare in the realm, though not as one might expect. It was based on contributions to the wellbeing of Tartarus, with more opportunities opening up the more one did. Even beggars and the indolent were granted access to a few scraps of the world’s wealth, but for the most part, power was consolidated among the powerful, as was the situation throughout all of Telvaria.

When the capital finally came into view, it was with a sight that briefly surprised even Jonathan, who had seen so many outlandish things since entering the Infinite Hells. The entire city floated above the rocky ground below, suspended by a quartet of glowing blue crystals, each the size of a mountain. Glowing tunnels of light ascended the sides of the city, and thousands, if not tens of thousands, of wagons and other vehicles drifted up them, pulled against the force of gravity.
“I wanted for you all to see this without any preconceptions,” Jarob explained. “That’s why I didn’t say anything to you.”
There was no response, with everyone simply staring at the city in wonder. It was an impossible sight, something as heavy and large as a small mountain range held up in the sky. The disc of rock that made up the base of the capital was heavy with towers and massive buildings, clearly with no expense skipped in their design. It was utterly massive, to the point where it took up a good portion of the horizon.
“Just how rich is this Merchant Queen?” Jonathan finally asked.
“Richer than you can believe,” was Jarob’s only reply.
