Both Livia and Caesar froze.
Caesar's body went rigid, every muscle locking as if carved from stone. Livia landed beside me silently, wings folding tightly and her pupils narrowing to thin slits.
The air felt wrong, heavy and pressurized, like the moment before a wildfire ignites.
Then...
ROOOOAAAR!!
The sound slammed into us, vibrating through the stone beneath my boots. Pebbles skittered down the cliff face, and the cavern mouth shuddered as if it might collapse.
My heart raced.
"…Oh, shit."
For half a second, my mind went blank.
Then instinct took over.
"Caesar... go!" I snapped, pointing down the slope. "Straight to the cavern!"
He didn't hesitate. With a sharp grunt, he launched himself forward, claws digging into the rock as he slid, jumped, and crashed down the incline. His heavy body dislodged stones that bounced and shattered toward the surf below.
I turned to Livia. She was already crouched, wings half-spread, eyes locked on me.
"Can you carry me?" I asked, reaching for the paracord clipped to my belt.
She chirred sharply, once in uncertainty but extended her talon to me
I grabbed her talons, looping the strap around my wrist and her leg, tying it off quickly. She pushed off...
And immediately struggled.
The coastal wind hit us from the side like a wall.
Salt spray stung my face, and the roar of waves smashed against the cliff below, white foam exploding against black stone. Livia's wings beat hard and unevenly, her powerful frame battling both my weight and the crosswinds battering us from every angle.
The ground rushed past beneath us, jagged rock, dark water, the cavern mouth growing closer.
"Easy, girl," I muttered through clenched teeth.
She angled downward, muscles straining. For a moment, I feared she might lose altitude too quickly
Then we dropped hard onto the rock just outside the cavern.
I released the strap and rolled free as she staggered, catching herself with a sharp screech. The cold sea air vanished the moment I stepped inside.
Heat slammed into me.
The cavern was warm no, it was hot with smoke and ash. The air reeked of sulfur and burned stone. My breath became heavier, sweat breaking out instantly on my skin.
Livia hopped in beside me, her wings brushing the rock walls.
Another roar echoed, closer now, and then a child's voice cut through it.
"Gary. get back!!"
My blood ran cold.
"…They're here."
I yanked my RangerNav up, my fingers shaking just enough to annoy me, and opened a channel.
"This is Junior Ranger Arata," I said quickly, forcing my voice to stay steady. "I've located Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak. They're inside a coastal cavern with a hostile Charizard, I repeat, a hostile Charizard. I'm engaging. Requesting immediate backup."
My voice sounded tight in my ears.
Caesar landed beside me, his claws scraping against the stone, chest heaving. We exchanged a single look; there were no words needed here
We ran.
The cavern opened up too quickly.
The narrow passage gave way to a massive chamber, large enough to swallow buildings. My flashlight beam barely penetrated the darkness, shadows stretching and warping as my eyes adjusted.
And then I saw it.
A shape in the center of the cavern.
Huge.
Larger than any Charizard I'd ever seen, it bore deep scars across its body. Its horn was cleanly snapped off. One arm ended in a jagged stump, and its right wing was mangled, the membrane torn and useless at its side. The flame at the tip of its tail burned wildly, casting erratic light across the chamber.
I could feel its anger like a physical force; raw and feral.
On the far side of the cavern, pressed against a rock outcrop, I saw them.
Ash and Gary.
Ash stood frozen, eyes wide, while Gary clutched his arm, blood dark against his sleeve.
"Charizard! It's me!" Gary shouted, desperation cracking his voice.
The Charizard didn't flinch.
It reared back, its chest expanding, heat pooling in its throat.
That was it. "Caesar, ROAR!"
Caesar threw his head back and roared.
The sound ripped through the cavern, high, piercing, defiant. It echoed off the walls, sharp enough to cut through the Charizard's gathering flame.
The Charizard paused.
Slowly, it turned its massive head toward us. toward the entrance, toward the challenger.
Its eyes locked onto mine.
In that moment, with my pulse roaring in my ears and the heat pressing down on my lungs, a single thought settled in my mind, cold and undeniable.
We can't win this.
The thought landed clean and sharp, cutting through adrenaline and panic alike. There was no denial nor bravado. Just the truth.
"Livia, distract it!"
My voice broke the silence.
Livia screeched and shot forward, her wings snapping open as she rocketed toward the Charizard's face. The sudden movement caught its attention instantly. It reared back and unleashed a Flamethrower, igniting the cavern with blinding light and searing heat.
The cavern illuminated.
A torrent of fire surged forward, igniting the very air. The stone walls glowed orange, and shadows vanished. The heat hit like a physical blow.
"Move!" I shouted.
Livia twisted mid-air, folding one wing and rolling hard to the side. Flames licked at her feathers, scorching the edges as she narrowly evaded the attack. Her sharp cry echoed with pain, but she pressed on toward the Charizard again.
"Caesar, support her! Keep up with me!"
Caesar snarled and surged forward, his claws digging deep into the rock as he braced himself. His mouth glowed blue-green as he fired a Dragon Pulse, the beam tearing through the cavern and aiming for the Charizard's flank.
The Charizard banked effortlessly, wings beating once as the pulse slammed into the far wall, causing stone to explode outward.
I was already running.
The flashlight bobbed wildly in my grip as I sprinted toward the back of the cavern, my sandals slipping on loose gravel. Every step felt agonizingly slow, and every breath burned.
"Gary! Ash!"
They were crouched near the rear wall, eyes wide and bodies pressed flat against the stone, as if it might swallow them whole.
I skidded to a stop in front of them.
"Are you hurt?"
Gary tried to stand but hissed in pain, clutching his hand. The skin was blistered and red, angry burns streaking across his palm.
"M-my hand..."
Ash stared at me, stunned. "Arata...? What are you..."
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
"I'm not answering that," I snapped, grabbing them both by the wrists. "Can you walk?"
Gary nodded stiffly. Ash hesitated, then nodded too.
"Good. Move."
I pulled them up, positioning myself between them and the open cavern.
Then the ground shuddered.
A roar tore through the space, deeper than before, filled with pure rage.
One of Caesar's Dragon Pulses struck the Charizard square in the chest.
The attack didn't even stagger it. The Charizard's eyes widened in fury.
It folded its wings and dropped like a meteor.
"Caesa..!"
He responded with a roar of his own, launching forward as draconic energy enveloped his body. Dragon Rush. The air screamed as he collided with the Charizard mid-descent.
The impact was explosive.
Dust and rock exploded outward, the shockwave knocking me back a step and grit stinging my eyes.
Caesar was thrown clear, crashing into the cavern floor and skidding, his claws scraping desperately for traction.
The Charizard flared its wings and rose again, barely slowed.
"Caesar!" I pulled the boys backward, my heart racing.
Caesar struggled to rise, his legs trembling.
Through our bond, I sensed it, His pain, shock, fury, and a fierce refusal.
He wasn't done yet.
I stepped forward instinctively, raising a hand.
Calm.
I projected the thought outward, slow and steady, toward the Charizard.
No threat. We don't want to fight.
The energy flowed steadily.
My Aura against its.
The Charizard hesitated, just for a moment. Its massive head tilted, one eye locking onto me, its anger simmering alongside curiosity. I held its gaze, my breath shallow.
No danger. I tried to push my intensions to it.
Behind me, Ash shifted, and a rock clattered.
The sound echoed far too loudly inside the cavern, The Charizard's pupils dilated. It roared and dove.
"Caesar, watch out !"
The Charizard slammed into him, jaws glowing as Fire Fang bit down hard on his shoulder. The scream Caesar let out pierced through me, a raw cry I had never heard before.
Caesar clawed desperately, Dragon Claw scraping ineffectively against the Charizard's hardened scales as it lifted him off the ground.
I froze.
My body refused to move.
I snapped out of it as I heard him scream again in agony.
"LIVIA!"
She responded instantly.
Livia dove from above, her wings slicing through the air as she unleashed a full-power Air Cutter. The blades of compressed wind struck the Charizard's wing with a cracking sound.
It roared in surprise and pain, releasing Caesar mid-air.
He hit the ground hard, skidding to a stop directly in front of me.
Blood dripped freely now.
"Caesar.. Get up... !"
The Charizard whipped around, its fury refocused.
It struck Livia mid-flight. The impact was brutal.
She screamed as she spiraled downward, her wings failing.
"No!"
I didn't think I reacted. My fingers found her Poké Ball and recalled her in a flash of red light just before she hit the stone.
The cavern fell deathly quiet.
The Charizard hovered above us now, wings slow and deliberate. Smoke curled from its jaws, and heat pressed down like a weight.
Behind me, Ash whimpered. Gary's grip tightened on my shirt.
The entrance was right there. The Charizard reared its head back as energy gathered in its mouth
"No.... Don't," I whispered.
Caesar staggered forward, positioning himself between us and the monster. His legs trembled, and his shoulder hung uselessly, blood soaking his scales.
Yet he stood firm.
The Charizard unleashed Fire Blast.
The kanji-shaped inferno ripped through the cavern, consuming everything in its path.
"PROTECT!"
Caesar braced as he held out his arms. A barrier materialized just as the flames crashed against it. The shield glowed white-hot, cracks racing across its surface like lightning.
"Hold.... hold...!"
The barrier shattered aslLight exploded around us, I threw myself over the boys...
And then... Something struck the Charizard from the side.
The Fire Blast collapsed mid-air.
The Charizard roared as the impact sent it reeling. Caesar dropped to one knee, panting heavily.
I heard the sound of wings beating the air. A new presence filled the cavern,
Then a voice, calm and commanding
"Dragonite Dragon Rush!"
The cavern trembled.
I glanced up just in time to see it.
A massive streak of dark blue-green energy sliced through the air like a falling star, twisting as it descended. It was raw draconic force, compressed and violent, Stronger than anything ceaser can attempt
It slammed into the Charizard mid-hover.
The impact was catastrophic.
The force propelled the Charizard backward as if it weighed nothing, its roar abruptly cut off as its body crashed into the cavern wall. Stone exploded outward, cracks spiderwebbing across the rock face. Boulders broke loose and thundered down, dust and debris enveloping the far end of the cavern in a choking cloud.
The shockwave knocked me flat.
I hit the ground hard, instinctively wrapping my arms around Ash and Gary as pebbles rained down around us. My ears rang, and the air vibrated as if struck by a bell.
Then, silence.
I lifted my head slowly.
The Charizard lay half-buried in rubble, wings slack, its chest rising only faintly. Smoke curled from its scales. It didn't attempt to rise again.
Above us, wings beat once.
Heavy and Controlled.
A shadow passed over the cavern entrance, blocking the moonlight for a heartbeat.
Then another presence.
A familiar pressure enveloped my mind, smooth and precise, entirely unlike the wild psychic force I'd felt before.
The air in front of me folded.
Light flared.
Suddenly, Professor Oak appeared between us and the battlefield, his lab coat fluttering as if caught in a strong wind. Beside him hovered Alakazam, its spoons crossed and eyes glowing faintly as psychic energy dissipated around it.
He looked furious.
Behind him, something enormous shifted.
A broad, orange figure stepped forward, wings folding with a low, steady rumble.
THE Dragonite stood by Oak's side, its tail swaying slowly and eyes fixed on the downed Charizard with calm, absolute authority.
