Rodrigues slid the window open, taking care not to make any noise that might carry to the street below. He’d only get one shot before everyone started diving for cover, and he wanted to make it count.
Once surprise was no longer an option, he would be able to use his powers to keep the afflicted in Cloudcroft under control—but he needed to take out the biggest threat first.

His target was exposed in the middle of the street. Rodrigues secured the sound suppressor onto the barrel of his SCAR Heavy and settled into position. When the crosshairs of his scope were centered on his target, he let out his breath, then held it as he squeezed the trigger.
The gun made a muffled barking noise. His target collapsed.
Headshot, he thought. That’s a kill.
