Chapter 5: Growth

  ~~~ Days 21-28
  ---
  ## Day 21
  Knox woke to find he couldn't breathe.
  This was concerning for obvious reasons, but became significantly MORE concerning when he realized the cause: Nyx had grown overnight and was now sprawled across his chest like a scaly blanket, her increased weight pressing down on his lungs.
  "Nyx," he wheezed. "Nyx, you're crushing me."
  *Mmph. Sleeping. Go away.*
  "Can't... breathe..."
  *Drama. You breathe plenty.* But she shifted, rolling off him onto the cave floor with a disgruntled huff. *You are very fragile for a demon. This is concerning. You should be sturdier.*
  Knox sucked in air gratefully, then sat up to look at her, and stared.
  She'd been cat-sized yesterday. Maybe twelve inches at the shoulder, small enough to curl up in his lap comfortably.
  Now she was the size of a medium dog. Easily eighteen inches tall, her body longer and more proportional, her wings finally looking like they belonged on her frame. Her scales had deepened too, the midnight black now shot through with subtle purple undertones that caught the firelight.
  "You grew," Knox said stupidly.
  *Obviously.* Nyx stretched, her claws extending and retracting with a satisfying snick. *Dragons grow quickly when properly fed. You have been feeding me properly. Therefore: growth. This is basic cause and effect.*
  "You're like... twice the size you were yesterday."
  *Yes. I noticed. I noticed EXTENSIVELY when I woke up and everything felt different.* She examined one of her forelimbs with satisfaction. *I am becoming magnificent. As expected. My structural development is proceeding excellently.*
  Knox's construction-trained eye evaluated her new form automatically. Better proportions. More efficient weight distribution. The framework that had seemed oversized before now made sense, she'd been built for this size all along, just waiting to grow into it.
  Like a building designed for future expansion, he thought. The foundation was always meant to support more than it initially carried.
  "More food," Knox muttered. "Of course."
  *I heard that.* Nyx padded over to him, her movements noticeably more graceful than before. The extra size seemed to have given her better balance, or maybe she'd just had more time to practice. *You should be pleased. A larger dragon is a more useful dragon. I am becoming more useful by the hour.*
  "I'm not complaining. Just... calculating how many Scale Hares I need to catch now."
  *Many. I am very hungry.* She bumped her head against his chest, a gesture that used to be cute and was now forceful enough to rock him backward. *Feed me. This is non-negotiable.*
  "Good morning to you too."
  *Mornings are irrelevant. Breakfast is relevant. Prioritize correctly.*
  Knox laughed despite himself and went to check his traps.
  ---
  The swamp felt different with Nyx at his side.
  Not on his shoulder, she was too big for that now, which she seemed genuinely disappointed about ("That was my SPOT. I CLAIMED that spot. Growth has BETRAYED me."), but walking beside him, matching his pace with her newly-coordinated stride.
  Her presence changed everything. The shadows felt less threatening when one of them was HIS shadow. The sounds of predators in the distance seemed less ominous when he had a predator of his own.
  *Something is watching us,* Nyx reported, her head swiveling toward a dense thicket. *I feel its attention.*
  Knox's Mana Sensitivity, finally back to full strength, confirmed it. A creature, medium-sized, lurking in the undergrowth. Not attacking, just... observing.
  "I feel it. What do you think?"
  *Weak.* Dismissive. *Not a threat. But annoying. I do not like being watched without permission.*
  "Welcome to Shadowfen. Everything watches everything."
  *Then everything should learn some manners.*
  She growled in the direction of the thicket, a sound that had grown considerably more impressive with her size increase. There was a startled rustle, and the watching presence retreated.
  *Better,* Nyx declared. *Now they know their place.*
  "You scared off a random swamp creature. Congratulations."
  *I am establishing dominance. It is important. Like establishing proper load-bearing structure. You must make clear from the beginning what can and cannot be supported.*
  Knox blinked. "Did you just compare territorial behavior to construction engineering?"
  *I have been listening to your thoughts. Some of your concepts are useful.* She flicked her tail. *When I am fully grown, nothing will dare watch us without permission.*
  "And how do they get permission?"
  *They ask nicely. And bring tribute.*
  Knox snorted. "You really liked those fish Gerald's friends brought, didn't you?"
  *Tribute is appropriate recognition of my magnificence. More creatures should provide it.*
  As if summoned by the mention of his name, Gerald emerged from a nearby tree, his tiny arms waving in greeting. He'd been appearing more frequently since Nyx hatched, seemingly fascinated by her development.
  *Fish,* Nyx acknowledged. *You may observe. You have earned observation privileges through previous tribute.*
  Gerald did a pleased barrel roll and fell into formation with them, hovering at Knox's other shoulder.
  They made for an odd procession: a seven-foot demon, a dog-sized dragon, and a flying goldfish with arms. The Shadowfen's other inhabitants gave them a wide berth.
  ---
  They found two Scale Hares in the traps and a Swamp Vole, a rat-like creature that Nyx declared "acceptable but beneath my dignity." She ate all of it anyway, crunching through bones with her increasingly impressive fangs.
  *Not enough,* she announced when finished. *I require more. My growth demands additional resources.*
  "That's everything in the traps."
  *Then we hunt.* Her eyes gleamed. *Properly. Not waiting for traps. Active hunting.*
  Knox hesitated. He'd been the one doing all the hunting so far, Nyx had been too small, too uncoordinated, too new to her body. But looking at her now, seeing the predator she was becoming...
  "You want to try hunting yourself?"
  *WITH you. Not instead of you.* She moved closer, pressing her flank against his leg. *We are bonded. We hunt together. This is how it should be.*
  "Partners."
  *Yes. Partners.* Satisfaction hummed through their bond. *Now teach me how you find prey. Share your techniques. I will improve upon them.*
  "Improve upon them?"
  *I am a dragon. Everything I do is automatically an improvement.*
  ---
  Teaching Nyx to hunt was an exercise in managing her ego.
  "The key is patience," Knox explained as they crouched in the undergrowth, watching a game trail. "Prey comes to you if you wait long enough. Moving around just alerts them."
  *Patience is tedious. I have better things to do than wait.*
  "Patience is effective."
  *I could simply chase them down. I am fast now. Much faster than yesterday.*
  "You're fast in a straight line. Prey doesn't run in straight lines. They zigzag. They use terrain. They're evolved for escape."
  Nyx grumbled but stayed put, her tail twitching with barely contained energy. Through the bond, Knox could feel her frustration, she wanted to MOVE, to CHASE, to prove herself. Sitting still went against every instinct she had.
  *There,* she announced suddenly, her head snapping toward movement in the bushes. *Prey. I see it.*
  A Scale Hare had emerged onto the trail, nose twitching, completely unaware of the predators watching it.
  *I am going to catch it.*
  "Wait, "
  She launched.
  It was not graceful. She crashed through the undergrowth like a small scaly avalanche, all enthusiasm and no technique. The Scale Hare bolted immediately, zigzagging through the forest with the desperate speed of prey that knows it's being chased.
  Nyx pursued, and to Knox's surprise, she was FAST. Her new size gave her reach and power she hadn't had before. She bounded over roots, ducked under branches, her body moving with an instinct that transcended her lack of experience.
  But the Scale Hare was faster. It darted into a hollow log, vanishing into a space too small for Nyx to follow.
  *COWARD,* she roared, actually roared, a sound that echoed through the swamp and startled birds from trees. *FACE ME LIKE PREY SHOULD!*
  "Prey doesn't face predators," Knox said, catching up to her. "That's the whole point of being prey."
  *Then prey is STUPID.* She clawed at the log in frustration, gouging deep furrows in the wood. *I almost had it. I was RIGHT THERE. My claws touched its fur.*
  "You were close. Really close."
  *Close is not caught. Close is FAILURE.*
  Knox crouched beside her, putting a hand on her shoulder. Through the bond, he pushed calm, reassurance.
  "First hunts are always hard. You'll get better. It's like constructing anything, the first attempt is rough. You learn from it and improve."
  *I should be better NOW. I am a dragon. Hunting is what I was MADE for.*
  "And you'll master it. But not in one try. Nothing worth doing is mastered in one try." He scratched behind her ears. "Even the best builders start with crooked walls."
  She turned her ember eyes on him, frustration and vulnerability warring in their depths. *You truly believe I will improve?*
  "I know you will. You're too stubborn to fail."
  This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.
  *That is...* She considered. *An acceptable compliment. I am indeed very stubborn. Stubborn is a structural advantage.*
  "The most stubborn dragon I've ever met."
  *I am the ONLY dragon you have met.*
  "Doesn't make it less true."
  She huffed, but her tail had stopped lashing. The frustration in the bond eased, replaced by determination.
  *Again,* she declared. *We hunt again. I will not stop until I catch something.*
  ---
  It took four more attempts.
  The second hunt ended when Nyx got tangled in hanging vines and had to be cut free. The third ended when her target dove into a stream and she refused to follow ("Water is for FISH. I am not a fish."). The fourth ended when she sneezed at a critical moment, actual shadow-fire erupting from her nostrils, and scared off everything within a hundred feet.
  But the fifth attempt...
  *There,* she breathed, her whole body going still. A Marsh Hen was picking through the undergrowth, unaware of the predators watching from downwind.
  *Slowly this time,* Knox sent through their bond. *Use the terrain. Circle around.*
  Nyx moved like a shadow, appropriately, given her nature. She kept low, using fallen logs and dense bushes as cover, approaching at an angle that kept her hidden from the Hen's line of sight.
  Knox watched, barely breathing.
  She was ten feet away. Five. Three.
  The Marsh Hen looked up.
  Nyx STRUCK.
  Her jaws closed around the bird's neck before it could even squawk. A single shake, and it went limp.
  For a moment, she just stood there, prey dangling from her mouth, ember eyes wide with disbelief.
  *I caught it,* she said, her mental voice stunned. *Knox. I CAUGHT it.*
  "You caught it."
  *I am a HUNTER. A real hunter. I caught PREY.*
  The joy that exploded through their bond was incandescent, pure, fierce triumph. She pranced in place, the Marsh Hen still in her jaws, tail lashing with excitement.
  *Look at me. LOOK AT ME. I am magnificent. I am terrifying. I am the greatest hunter in this entire swamp.*
  "The greatest."
  *The ABSOLUTE greatest.* She dropped the prey to gloat more effectively. *Did you see how fast I was? How precise? I am a predator of EXCEPTIONAL quality.*
  "I saw. I'm very proud."
  *You should be. You helped create this perfection through your teaching.* She picked up the Marsh Hen again and trotted over to him, dropping it at his feet. *We share. You taught me. It is only fair.*
  Knox looked at the mangled bird, then at his dragon, HIS dragon, and felt something warm expand in his chest.
  "You take this one. You earned it."
  *But, *
  "First kill goes to the hunter. That's the rule."
  *I did not know there was a rule.*
  "There is now."
  Nyx considered, then grabbed the Marsh Hen with renewed enthusiasm. *Very well. I accept this honor. But next time, we share. Partners.*
  "Partners."
  She ate the entire bird, bones and all, then spent ten minutes grooming herself with the self-satisfied air of a creature who had just proven something important.
  [EFFECT: COORDINATED HUNTS WITH BONDED PARTNER ARE 30% MORE EFFECTIVE]
  [SECONDARY NOTE: ONCE SHE STOPPED CRASHING THROUGH EVERYTHING]
  ```

  *I am a natural,* Nyx declared, reading the notification through their bond. *The System itself acknowledges my magnificence.*

  "The System also noted you crashed through everything."

  *That was CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. I learned and improved. The System should focus on my improvement.*

  ---

  ## Day 23-24: Building and Burning

  The next few days settled into a routine.

  Mornings: hunting. Nyx's success rate improved daily, by day 24, she was catching prey more often than not, her technique refining with each attempt. Knox focused on driving prey toward her, using his larger size and Demonic Presence to flush creatures from cover.

  Afternoons: training. Knox worked on his Earth Manipulation while Nyx practiced her shadow-breath and flight attempts. The cave expanded section by section, becoming something more than mere shelter.

  "What are you building?" Nyx asked on day 24, watching him shape stone into a raised platform at the back of the cave.

  "A proper sleeping area. Elevated, so we're not on the cold floor."

  *Practical.* She examined his work with critical eyes. *The angle is good. Defensible position, clear sightlines to the entrance.*

  "You've been paying attention to my construction thoughts."

  *Your thoughts are very organized. I find them... soothing.* She sounded almost embarrassed by the admission. *They have structure. Logic. I appreciate structure and logic.*

  Knox smiled and went back to work. The platform took shape under his hands, smooth stone, gently sloped for drainage, large enough for both of them with room to spare.

  *You are building for my future size,* Nyx observed.

  "You're still growing. No point building something you'll outgrow in a week."

  *This is... thoughtful.* She moved closer, pressing against his side. *You plan for me. For us.*

  "That's what partners do."

  *Yes.* Through the bond, he felt her contentment, deep and warm and certain. *That is what partners do.*

  ---

  ## Day 25-26: The Watchers

  Gerald had been acting strange all morning.

  The Aerial Koi kept zipping to the cave entrance, staring into the forest, then zipping back to hover near Knox with his tiny arms making urgent gestures.

  "What is it, Gerald?"

  More gestures. Pointing at the trees. Pointing at his own eyes. Making a complicated series of movements that might have meant "danger" or "visitors" or "I need to use the bathroom."

  *He is trying to communicate,* Nyx said, watching the fish with narrowed eyes. *Poorly.*

  "Yeah, I got that. Gerald, is something out there?"

  Gerald nodded so vigorously his whole body shook. He pointed at the treeline again, then made himself as small as possible, fins tucked, arms crossed, trying to look inconspicuous.

  *Something that hides,* Nyx translated. *Something that watches.*

  "Watchers."

  Knox extended his Mana Sensitivity, scanning the surrounding forest. At first, nothing, just the usual background noise of Shadowfen, the constant hum of ambient magic.

  But then... there. Faint signatures, multiple, positioned in a rough perimeter around their territory. Small. Agile. And definitely intelligent, they were too well-organized for animals.

  "We have company," Knox said quietly.

  *I noticed them yesterday,* Nyx admitted. *I was hoping they would leave.*

  "Why didn't you tell me?"

  *I was handling it. I growled at them several times. They did not seem impressed.*

  "Growling isn't diplomacy."

  *Growling is EXCELLENT diplomacy. It clearly communicates 'go away or I will eat you.' Very straightforward.*

  Knox sighed and headed for the cave entrance. Whatever was watching them, he'd rather meet it head-on than wait for it to make the first move.

  *Knox, *

  "Stay here. Keep Gerald safe."

  *I will NOT stay here. You are MINE. Where you go, I go.* She stalked to his side, hackles raised. *Besides, I want to growl at them more. In person.*

  ---

  The fairies revealed themselves ten minutes later.

  One moment Knox was walking through a clearing, Nyx at his flank, Gerald hovering nervously behind them. The next, the air was filled with lights, dozens of small winged figures emerging from the trees, surrounding them in a loose sphere of glowing bodies.

  *AMBUSH,* Nyx snarled, shadow building in her throat.

  "Wait." Knox held up a hand. "They're not attacking."

  And they weren't. The fairies had formed their perimeter but weren't advancing. They were watching. Evaluating.

  Testing, Knox realized. They want to see how we react.

  One fairy separated from the group, larger than the others, with silver hair that glowed faintly in the dappled light. She flew to hover at Knox's eye level, her expression assessing.

  "So you're the demon," she said. Her voice was surprisingly resonant for someone six inches tall. "We've been watching you."

  *Obviously,* Nyx growled. *Your surveillance skills are adequate but your stealth is poor. I could smell you from the cave.*

  The fairy's lips twitched. "The dragon speaks. Interesting."

  "I'm Knox," he said, trying to project calm-but-not-threatening. "This is Nyx. And you are...?"

  "Lira." The fairy crossed her arms, studying him with eyes that held centuries of suspicion. "Senior Scout of the Grove. We've been debating what to do about you since you arrived."

  "And what have you decided?"

  "That remains to be seen." She flew in a slow circle around him, examining him from all angles. "You're unusual. A demon who hasn't killed anything intelligent since arriving. Who built shelter instead of seeking conquest. Who bonded with a dragon and treats it like..." She paused, searching for the word.

  "Like family," Knox supplied.

  "Family." Lira tasted the word like something foreign. "Demons don't have families."

  "This one does."

  *I am not his family,* Nyx interjected. *I am his PARTNER. His bond-mate. His other half. Family implies equality. I am clearly superior.*

  "Nyx."

  *What? It is TRUE.*

  Lira's expression shifted, Knox couldn't quite read it, but it might have been amusement. "The dragon has a high opinion of herself."

  *The dragon has an ACCURATE opinion of herself. There is a difference.*

  "Nyx," Knox repeated, with more emphasis. "Maybe let me handle the diplomatic first contact?"

  *Fine. But if she insults me, I reserve the right to bite her.*

  "No biting diplomats."

  *What about lightly singeing?*

  "No."

  *You are very restrictive.*

  Lira watched this exchange with obvious fascination. "You two really are a pair. I've never seen a dragon defer to anyone before."

  *I am not DEFERRING. I am choosing to let him speak first. There is a DIFFERENCE.*

  Knox decided to redirect before Nyx said something they'd all regret. "You said you've been debating what to do about us. What are the options?"

  Lira's expression sobered. "Kill you. Drive you out. Make an alliance. Or simply continue watching until we have more data."

  "Which are you leaning toward?"

  "That depends." She floated closer, her eyes locked on his. "Why are you here, demon? What do you want?"

  Knox considered lying. Considered half-truths and evasions. But something about this fairy, about the directness in her eyes, made him choose honesty instead.

  "I didn't choose to be here. I died, in my old world, and woke up in this swamp. No explanation, no guidance, no idea what I was doing. I found Nyx's egg, saved her, and now I'm just... trying to survive. Build something stable. Make a home."

  "A home in the most dangerous region on the continent?"

  "Didn't exactly have a choice about the location." Knox shrugged. "But I'm adapting. Learning. Getting stronger. If there are neighbors who want peace, I'm interested in that. If there are threats who want war..." He glanced at Nyx. "We'll handle them."

  Lira was quiet for a moment, studying him with those too-bright eyes. The other fairies had spread out, forming a loose perimeter, watching the exchange with obvious interest.

  "Undecided," she said finally. "You don't seem evil. But demons who seem not-evil are sometimes the most dangerous kind. The ones who earn trust before betraying it."

  "I don't have any interest in betraying anyone."

  "Everyone says that. The ones who mean it and the ones who don't sound exactly the same." She flew back a few feet. "So here's what's going to happen. We're going to keep watching. If you turn out to be what you seem, a weird demon just trying to survive, then maybe we can help each other. If you turn out to be hiding something..."

  *Then what?* Nyx demanded, projecting loudly enough that Lira actually flinched.

  "Then we have ways of dealing with threats." The fairy's voice was steady despite the flinch. "Ways you wouldn't see coming."

  *I will see EVERYTHING coming. I am a dragon. We, *

  "Nyx." Knox cut her off gently. "Let the nice fairy finish."

  *She is not nice. She is suspicious and small and her wings are too sparkly.*

  "Jealousy isn't a good look."

  *I am not JEALOUS. I am CRITICAL. These are different things.*

  Lira watched the exchange with obvious amusement. "You two are quite the pair."

  "We're figuring things out." Knox met her eyes. "Look, I get it. You don't know me. You have no reason to trust me. But I'm not here to cause problems. I got dumped in this swamp against my will, found a dragon egg, and now I'm just trying to survive long enough to figure out what comes next."

  "And what does come next?"

  "I have no idea. But it doesn't involve hurting fairies, if that helps."

  Lira considered this. Then, slowly, she smiled.

  It was a small smile, cautious and calculating, but it was real.

  "I believe you," she said. "Or at least, I believe you believe what you're saying. That's a start." She gestured to the other fairies, who began dispersing back into the forest. "We'll be in touch. Try not to do anything suspicious in the meantime."

  "I'll do my best."

  "That's all any of us can do." She turned to go, then paused. "The dragon. She really is your partner?"

  "In everything that matters."

  "And the fish?"

  Gerald, who had been hiding behind Knox's leg, peeked out nervously.

  "That's Gerald. He's... also family."

  Lira's smile widened. "A demon, a dragon, and a fish. The Shadowfen gets stranger every year." She looked at Nyx directly. "You chose well, little dragon. Not every hatchling finds a bond-mate who would give everything to save them."

  And before Nyx could respond, Lira was gone, zipping into the forest so fast she left a trail of sparkles in her wake.

  *I do not know if I like her,* Nyx said after a moment.

  "I don't think she's sure about us either."

  *She said I chose well.* Nyx's tail curled around Knox's leg. *She is correct. I did choose well. But I do not need her validation.*

  "Of course not."

  *I am simply noting that she is perceptive. For something so small and sparkly.*

  ---

  ## Day 27-28: Expansion

  Knox spent day 27 expanding the cave again, Nyx's growth was showing no signs of slowing, and he'd calculated that she'd outgrow their current space within a week. His Earth Manipulation had reached level 6, allowing him to move serious amounts of stone with reasonable efficiency.

  "What are you building now?" Nyx asked, watching him hollow out a new chamber.

  "Storage. We need somewhere to keep preserved food for when hunting is difficult."

  *Practical. I approve of practical.* She examined the walls critically. *The corners are too sharp. You should round them. Sharp corners collect debris.*

  "When did you become a construction critic?"

  *I have been observing your work for weeks. I have absorbed your knowledge through our bond and through direct observation.* She lifted her chin proudly. *I am now an expert on load-bearing structures and drainage systems.*

  Knox laughed. "An expert, huh?"

  *Yes. Ask me anything about foundation stability. I will enlighten you.*

  "I'll keep that in mind."

  Nyx spent the morning practicing her shadow-breath while Knox worked. The results were increasingly impressive. What had started as wisps and dribbles was now a consistent stream of living darkness, extending almost ten feet before dissipating.

  *Watch this,* she commanded, aiming at a rock formation Knox had created specifically for target practice.

  The shadow-breath hit dead center, and the stone... changed. Color leached out of it. Cracks formed, spreading like spider webs. Within seconds, the entire formation had crumbled into grey powder.

  *DESTRUCTION,* Nyx announced with satisfaction. *Proper destruction. Not wisps. DEVASTATION.*

  "That's... actually terrifying."

  *Thank you.* She preened. *I have been working on pressure. Concentration. Turning a stream into a beam.*

  "A death beam."

  *Yes. MY death beam. For killing things that threaten us.* She turned her ember eyes on him. *You should have a death beam too. It is only fair.*

  "My Chaos Fire is more of a death... burst? Explosion?"

  *Unacceptable. We should match. Practice until you have a beam.*

  They spent the afternoon developing complementary attacks. Knox's Chaos Fire and Nyx's shadow-breath had interesting synergies, the chaotic nature of his flames seemed to amplify her shadow effects, while her darkness provided contrast that made his fire burn brighter.

  "Twilight Burn," Knox read aloud. "That sounds appropriately ominous."

  *We are appropriately ominous. A demon and his dragon, wielding shadow and flame.* Nyx's tail lashed with excitement. *Our enemies will learn to fear us.*

  "We don't have enemies yet."

  *We will. This is Shadowfen. Everyone has enemies eventually.* She moved to his side, her growing bulk warm against him. *But when they come, we will be ready. Together.*

  Gerald, who had been watching from a safe distance, executed a barrel roll of approval. His tiny arms gave a double thumbs-up.

  *The fish approves,* Nyx noted. *This is... acceptable. Fish approval is not required, but it is appreciated.*

  Knox looked at them, the dragon who had claimed him so completely, the fish who had adopted him so inexplicably, and felt something settle in his chest. Something that felt like home.

  "Together," he agreed.

  *Always,* Nyx confirmed. *Now, again. I wish to see larger explosions.*

  "Your wish is my command."

  *Yes. It is. Remember that.*
