Chapter 8: What the hell is this?

The Orc approached Ari with a predatory smile.

It raised the weapon in its right hand.

  ‘Move! Move! Please Move!’

The monster lowered the machete towards Ari's neck; however, as though to mock him, it did so slowly.

Despite his desperate plea, Ari's body refused to move.

His eyes drifted from the tip of the Orc's bde to the wound in its bulging neck.

  ‘I still have a chance.’

He contracted every muscle fibre in his body in a st-ditch attempt to end things once and for all.

With his grip on the sword altered for maximum impact, he lunged at the Orc's neck.

Perhaps not expecting any resistance, the Orc did not react to his attack.

Ari struck the open wound on its neck with all the power he could muster.

  Crack!

Following repeated abuse against high-level monster muscle, the D-Rank bde could no longer handle the strain and shattered into hundreds of fragments.

Searing pain exploded from his gut and lower back the next moment.

Ari gnced at the machete in his abdomen and Managed to store the broken weapon in his inventory before,

  “Aaargh!”

The Orc suddenly yanked the bde out, causing his legs to buckle, and he colpsed to his hands and knees.

  (Gehee Gehee)

He gred at the smug bastard who stared at him with a toothy grin.

  "Fuck you! You-"

His curse was cut short when its rge foot approached his face.

  He couldn't react.

  Boom!

The kick sent him flying back.

  Thud!

  “Oof!”

  Thud!

  “Aah!”

Ari bounced on the ground a few times, then slid on the ground.

  “Cough-Cough!”

An arming amount of blood spewed out of his mouth.

Ari struggled to breathe, he knew at least a few of his ribs were fractured from the impact.

He tried to get up, but his arms and legs trembled under the weight of his own body.

  Tap-Tap

  Tap-Tap

The sound of footsteps grew louder as the Orc approached.

‘Is this really how it ends? After all the effort it took to kill two of those bastards, I’m going to die at the hands of a single fucking Orc?’

Ari could only ment. His stamina reserves were depleted, and his condition left much to be desired.

  (Garru Garru)

  (Gehee Gehee)

Ari winced and cwed the ground as the Orc sat on his abdomen.

The monster wrapped its cws around his throat, and squeezed.

Ari grabbed its wrists but struggled in vain to pull its hands away.

He tried punching until his knuckles bled, but the Orc ughed at his feeble attempts.

Strength left his body rapidly; it was hopeless. He cked the power to resist.

Just before the light faded completely, it loosened its grip.

  Ari gasped for air.

  (Gehee Gehee)

The monster really enjoyed toying with him.

With some blood flow returning to his brain, he remembered his broken sword.

He withdrew it from his inventory and began stabbing the Orc. He knew it was pointless, but he refused to go down without a fight.

The Orc simply continued to ugh at his pathetic struggle, then began to strangle him in earnest again, pushing his head back.

From this position, the tree line near the edge of the clearing became visible, and in the corner of his eye, something significant and brown caught his attention.

In his desperation, a fsh of inspiration struck.

The tree line indicated that they were near the lone boulder.

The idea of using Blink came to mind.

He couldn’t think about the consequences of forcing a spell with low Mana.

There was no time for hesitation; the alternative was death.

'I refuse to be killed by a lowly fucking Orc!'

Ari held the sword in a reverse grip, in line with the wound on the left side of the Orc’s neck.

The Orc disregarded his actions and continued toying with him.

Ari envisioned his destination and flexed his arm, thrusting the short bde into the wound with all of his remaining strength.

Ari’s blurry vision warped once more.

His sight returned just in time to witness the look of shock on the Orc’s face as he impaled it against the boulder.

He released the sword piercing the Orc's bulging neck and colpsed onto his back.

  “Cough-Cough!”

  ‘My throat is killing me.’

  [Trial Of Courage Completed]

  [Congratutions]

  [Modifier Condition Restored]

  “Ah, much better.”

  [Sponsor Message Received]

  ‘What?’

  [Excellent job not dying, Ar

Ari rolled onto his side, resting his head on his hand.

‘So now you want to show up.’

[I knew you could handle it without max-level abilities]

Ari stared at the Orc corpses in the distance, reflecting on the desperate battle he barely survived.

  [Hey... Are you ignoring me?]

“It doesn’t feel great, does it?” Ari replied.

  [Hehehe. How adorable]

“What do you want this time?”

[Don’t pout, you got what you wanted right?]

Ari couldn’t deny her words. Despite her antics, she fulfilled her part of the deal.

He sighed. “You’re right. Why are you here, sponsor?”

  [Hehe.]

[Remember what I told you when you asked me that before?]

Ari recalled her response and sat up.

“I don’t follow, didn’t you already do that?”

  [Do you truly believe that?]

He didn’t know how to respond.

Following a sudden fsh of golden light, a rge gold coin floated ahead of him.

  Ari reached for the coin.

[This is a one time re-roll token. When used, it will reset your profile, for the most part]

  Ari pulled his hand back.

[Hehe. Don’t worry, it won’t undo your synchronisation]

“Why are you giving this to me?”

[If you want to use the token, simply grab it. Your profile will change to what you desire the most]

  “Reality Bender. Answer me.”

[I selected you for a reason, Ari. You are a Modifier at your core, don’t limit yourself]

  “How am I limiting myself?”

[Use it, or don’t. The choice is yours, Ari.]

[This is the only time you’ll be granted the opportunity. Don’t regret it ter]

It was obvious that Reality Bender wanted him to use the token, but Ari couldn’t decide immediately.

What if he lost all his max-level abilities?

He survived the Orcs, but he wouldn’t repeat that scenario if he had the choice.

Then there were Reality Bender’s cryptic words.

How would the token grant him what he most desired when he already had it?

The idea of having his stats at max-level crossed his mind, but he quickly dismissed it.

‘What I desire most… My wildest fantasies.’

“How long do I have to decide?”

  [Ten seconds starting now]

  [10]

  [9]

“Hey wait!” Ari jumped to his feet.

  [5]

  ‘She skipped four seconds!’

  [3]

  “Argh fuck it!”

  Ari grabbed the token.
