I don't really know what to do.
Things being as they are, my parents taking me back home seems a little elusive.
Furthermore, I fear that I could lose control again, but next time with more dire consequences.
I am not even sure if there aren’t already any lasting effects I may have caused for them.
But that's probably nothing I need to bother myself with anymore, as I'm a fucking monster that scared the shit out of them, and that they'll never accept as their daughter anymore.
...I feel terrible.
I rest my head on the table and mostly ignore Verad.
There is not much he can do about my problems, so interaction is kinda pointless.
Me being homeless soon seems to be a given.
Just then, I hear movement outside the room.
Quite a lot of movement!
A moment later, the door bursts open, and two soldiers proceed to enter and settle on each side of the door, followed by another soldier and an elderly man in a distinctively different, yet clearly high-quality, uniform.
The mere fact that I don't recognize it as one of the usual officers makes me queasy.
Through the gap, I also perceive a whole additional troop of soldiers waiting outside.
To summarize, this person is apparently very important.
"Is this the individual?" (elderly man)
"Yes, Sir! The one who caused the incident!" (soldier)
Hello?!
It's not like I planned anything!
The soldier might be from the gate.
But who the elder is eludes me.
Hmm, which uniforms do I know?
Soldier, vice squad lead, squad leader or third rank officer, leading commander or second rank officer, higher leading officer or first rank officer, captain, general, I know all those.
Could it be?
But no, that would be ridiculous.
Nonetheless, ignoring him seems to be the wrong approach for me here.
Having no idea what is going on, I make eye contact.
Yet the suddenly tenser atmosphere quickly reminds me that there was something with my eyes.
Seemingly ignoring it, the man settles on the other side of the table, in front of me.
However, I notice that the two soldiers prepare themselves to strike at a moment's notice.
This again causes me to become tense, and the courteous smile of the man in front of me doesn't really help me there.
"So... it seems you've caused quite a commotion, Miss..." (elder man)
"Yomi." (V)
"Ahh, Captain Verad! Very helpful. How pleasant that you are present. But is there a need for you to interrupt us?" (Z)
"Ahem, Marshall Zervion! Yomi is a friend of mine who grew up with my younger brother!" (V)
Marshall!?
For real?
But, but, it doesn't go any higher than this!
"You don't say? She must be a fine person for sharing such close ties to your respected family." (Z)
"I, I think so." (V)
"Great, then this should make this a fair bit easier. But next time, you should relay such information immediately. The way you brought your "friend" here, one might believe you intended to suppress any word of what happened at the gate. Even to your superiors." (Z)
This man makes cold shivers run down my spine.
Not really, as I'm dead and like this, always cold, and have yet to be able to shiver, but the general sense is definitely present.
Those were barely hidden threats towards Verad, and this even without dropping his smile.
"I thought it wouldn't be necessary, Sir. After all, it was just about one individual and I wanted first to investigate by myself before bothering my superiors." (V)
"Aha! And your investigation? What results did it show?" (Z)
Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website.
"Uhh, she did not intend to cause problems, but her situation happened recently, so she lost control. Also, we've got reports of a raided carriage and a stray magician committing various crimes, Sir!" (V)
"Is that so?" (Z)
I really don't like this look.
The last time I felt like this was under Nuvia's gaze.
And this did not work out very well for me.
"Sir, I have known her for a long time and can trust Yomi's words. And she surely wasn't able to cause anything of the aforementioned by herself!" (V)
You know, 'was' is maybe the keyword here.
Not like I would intend to commit any crimes.
"Did I say that she is suspected of anything?" (Z)
"If she's not, then why is she the subject of so much scrutiny?" (V)
"Captain Verad. You can't deny that there are peculiar circumstances to the given situation." (Z)
"Sir, she's just a civilian. I don't think..." (V)
"A civilian? What an interesting view on the situation. As far as I've heard, this individual was accompanied by a force of three orcs, who were in a condition where they could engage our complete defenses nearly unhindered. Furthermore, it seems even now two of them remain after our very distinctive efforts to put them down. Only decapitation has worked for now. And your 'friend' here appears to be deeply related to the mentioned condition." (Z)
I think I felt something cut off earlier.
Was that it?
Well, it's not like I was emotionally invested in them, so losing one doesn’t bother me all that much.
Also, the sensation of losing one was barely noticeable.
However, the direction this talk goes is a little concerning, and this revelation once again fails to put me at ease.
"I am not quite sure what you're intending to imply, Sir." (V)
"I mean to imply that she can raise the dead and make them fight. Even the most shallow insight on this relates to an incredible tactical value." (Z)
"Sir, this isn't right. She still has rights, and we can't just take advantage of her, solely because she has unique circumstances. Not to speak that she's barely of age. We-" (V)
"We are at war, Captain Verad! The orc horde has built up to pose a threat of a scale unprecedented in centuries, and the way they go about taking tactical positions and attacking our supply lines just allows for one conclusion: An orc chieftain has risen and leads them in a controlled manner against our forces, and with uncommon tactical insight to boost! All this, while our country prefers to tear itself apart in an idle struggle for power rather than to raise its forces against the common threat! Not to speak of what Koreso is currently doing! And in this situation, you want me to ignore a condition that could pose to become our greatest asset?" (Z)
This sounds rather dire, I would say, but I am getting more worried about myself right now.
"Sir, are you suggesting..." (V)
Completely ignoring Verad, he turns to me.
"Miss Yomi, I hereby recruit you under the terms of martial law for the army of the Kingdom of Rakis! Your unique abilities are, as such, to be brought to use for the sake of the people. You will serve as a third rank officer of our forces until times may prove to allow for a relief." (Z)
"Th-third rank officer?" (Y)
Never mind becoming a soldier, as I planned before, but I certainly didn't plan on leading people right from the start.
There's a proper order to things!
"Sir, she didn't even receive any training as a soldier yet! Not to speak of a commanding position!" (V)
Just my thoughts, Verad!
"Then it is due time that such will commence! Both martial as well as logistic training!" (Z)
"Are you seriously intending to send her onto the battlefield?" (V)
"Captain Verad, mind your words! You seem to forget that the standing army is merely a luxury this country keeps maintaining! If the situation worsens, we would have to exercise conscription on a larger scale. By restricting it to this one case, we can prevent such a thing. The martial training is just a precaution. It isn't like we would put such an asset in the first line. Even more, by making use of her capabilities, we may be able to establish a unit of free use which won't cause any casualties on our side if it were to be obliterated. There's certainly no need for her to get directly involved, aside from giving her instructions, as she already proved to be capable of. I am not letting this chance slide!" (Z)
"Ummh, sorry, but. Have... have I no word in this? I, I mean, I don’t want to anger them further, and my parents said I shouldn't join the army." (Y)
Okay, both their looks say 'No'!
"Miss Yomi, as it was presented to me, the persons in the other room, who you refer to as your parents, aren't going to take you with them. As such, you are apparently in need of a place to stay. And if word gets out about your... condition, you would have difficulties in finding any form of employment, or shelter. At least from decent organizations. I am offering you an honorable position with respectable conditions. Also, if you still see yourself as a subject of Rakis, you should be aware that I, in my acting role as marshal of the Rakisean military, have the right to recruit any citizens they require." (Z)
It seems "offering" and "conscription" share the same definition for this man.
But he is somewhat right.
There are issues with going home with my parents, to put it mildly, and if I don't do this, I am going to end up being homeless.
Which would still be the best case, as possible alternatives might end up with me getting hunted down as the corpse-raising life-leecher that I am.
I mean, I look... well, dead!
Who would take someone like this in?
In addition, I had aspired to become a soldier.
Yet the terms under which it happens now are a little unusual.
I mean, raising the dead?
This doesn't sound like a very nice ability.
Not really the way I wanted to protect the people and become famous.
And what even are my limits in terms of numbers I can raise?
Or what about my source of magic?
Or where I'd get the corpses?
Will I use just orcs, or might I have to resurrect people from the graveyard?
Isn't this morally problematic?
And what about my body?!
Will I eventually start to decay?
Whatever may be, I feel like there's a lot coming my way.
