Chapter 51: The Flight of Shadows and the Awakening of Chaos

  [POV Era]

The icy night air struck my synthetic face like a whip, but I did not slow down. As I exited the technical building of Sector Alpha, the outside world had transformed into an anthill of frantic lights and bring arms tearing through the silence of the dam. I carried Sora pressed against my chassis; her body weighed less than my calcutions predicted, or perhaps it was the adrenaline in my core that made every movement feel light, almost ethereal. In my left hand, the red egg no longer merely glowed; it pulsed with a scarlet fury that illuminated the wet asphalt beneath my feet, casting long, distorted shadows of the patrols converging on our position.

“System, immediate escape route. Avoid the main arteries—the Leader will have deployed heavy blockades,” I ordered as I vaulted over a concrete containment barricade with an agility that would have shattered any human’s knees.

[ Analyzing urban topography and surveilnce network… Era, the northern perimeter is saturated. I suggest passage through the drainage tunnels of the eastern sector. They are outside the range of the automated turrets, but the debris density will reduce our speed by 30%. ]

“We have no other option. Do it.”

I ran. Each step was an explosion of mechanical power. Behind us, the echoes of the Cyclopes that had managed to fnk the colpsed staircase were beginning to close in. It was not only the mutations; I could hear the roar of the settlement’s tactical vehicle engines. The headlights of the off-road units swept through the darkness, searching for the silhouette of the metal “traitor” carrying the heart of their experiments away.

Sora let out a faint groan, her head swaying against my shoulder. The effect of the ritual was fading, but the awakening was violent.

“Orion… why… why is everything moving so fast?” she murmured, her half-open eyes fixed on the glow of the egg.

“Don’t talk, Sora. Save your energy. We’re getting out of here,” I replied, my voice filtered through the combat processor to sound firm, masking the vibration in my own internal systems.

[ Warning! Two rapid interception vehicles 200 meters on the right fnk. They are armed with net cannons and electromagnetic pulses. ]

  “They’re not catching us.”

I turned sharply into a narrow alley whose walls were covered in steam pipes. The egg in my hand seemed to react to my urgency, releasing a pulse of heat that distorted the air around me. A vehicle appeared at the end of the alley, blocking the exit with its high beams blinding me. Guards stepped out, aiming their weapons.

“Stop now, Era! The Leader orders you to surrender the specimen!” a voice shouted through a megaphone.

I did not stop. I could not. If I slowed, the trap would close forever.

“System, overload the jump actuator. I’m going over them,” I said internally.

[ Warning: The additional weight of Sora Tanaka and the Red Egg alters the center of gravity. Risk of failed nding: 15%. ]

  “Calcute and compensate.”

Three meters from the vehicle, I drove my legs forward with all the energy the core could divert. The asphalt cracked under the pressure and we rose in a parabolic arc that defied gravity. We passed over the roof of the off-road vehicle, catching a glimpse of the guards’ astonished faces beneath us. The nding was violent; my alloy feet sank into the ground, but I managed to roll over my right shoulder—shielding Sora with the left—and resumed running without losing a shred of momentum.

We entered the drainage tunnel zone. The air here was damp and smelled of mold and old rust. It was a maze of dark cement cutting deep into the slopes of the mountain that supported the dam. The red egg became our only ntern.

“Chelsea… we have to get to Chelsea,” Sora murmured, regaining full consciousness. She clutched my jacket, trembling. “Era… what is that thing you’re carrying? I feel… I feel like it’s speaking to me.”

“It’s the egg, Sora. It saved your life in Sector Alpha. Don’t let go of it if something happens to me,” I said, even though I knew I was not going to let anything happen to me.

[ Era, we are one kilometer from the office building where you hid Chelsea. However, I detect a massive signature approaching from the air. The Leader has deployed a heavy transport unit… and it carries an Executor-css Ganut chained to the exterior. ]

A thunderous roar shook the tunnel walls. Above us, the concrete ceiling vibrated under the power of a cargo helicopter’s turbines. The Leader was not going to let us escape; he was willing to tear apart the infrastructure of his own dam to recim the egg.

“We’re close, Sora. Hold on tight!”

We emerged from the drainage tunnel at the base of the office building where Chelsea was waiting. The structure rose like a gray skeleton against a sky ignited by arms. I bounded up the exterior stairs in a single leap, shattering the metal steps with the force of the momentum. I entered through the broken window of the second floor, nding in the office where I had left the girl.

Chelsea was awake, crouched behind the filing cabinets with one of my daggers in her hand, her eyes wide with terror. When she saw us enter, she let out a cry of relief that turned into astonishment at the sight of the glowing egg.

“Sora! Era! What… what is all this chaos?” Chelsea excimed, running toward us.

“There’s no time to expin. We have to move now!” I shouted as the sound of the helicopter’s turbines became deafening just outside the window.

A massive spotlight flooded the room with white light. Through the shattered gss we saw the silhouette of the Executor: a four-meter-tall Ganut cd in bck biotic pte armor, with crimson eyes glowing with programmed bloodlust. It hung from the helicopter’s cables, swaying like a pendulum of death.

“Sora, Chelsea, behind me!” I ordered, deploying the bde of my right gauntlet and aiming the rail cannon of the left toward the sky. “System, drain the emergency reserves. If that monster comes down, I’ll need every watt of power we have.”

[ Energy at 35%. Emergency reserves activated. Era, this is the st line. If we do not break the siege here, we will be trapped on the dam’s outskirts. ]

The egg on the floor between the three of us began to pulse so rapidly that the remaining windows of the building shattered. The true escape had just ended; now the fight for pure survival was about to begin.
