Searching around, Darren begins to gather small twigs and branches to use as firewood. After gathering what he feels like is a good amount, he stacks a few of the smaller pieces together to build a base for his fire. “Now, how am I going to light this. On Survivor, they use flint. Is that something I could find?”

Getting up, Darren starts looking around for rocks. Having gathered a few different-looking ones, he sits by his pile of firewood. “Let’s give this a try, Investigate.”

  Investigation Failed.

“Damn. Why is it failing? Let’s think this out. So far, the only times it failed are when I’ve tried to investigate that squirrel and the last couple of foxes. It worked on the System Credits and on the den. So why not the stones and animals?” As he sat there, a thought came to mind. What if Investigation and Identification are two separate skills? Looking back at the rocks, “Identify.”

Congratulations, you have gained the Identification Skill. Identification (Basic): You can glean basic information on Creatures and Objects. You gain 15 XP. XP to next level 370.

Identification Successful. You have successfully identified the following:

  1. Quartz x3 (Basic - Crafting)

  2.
  3. Rock x6

  4.
  5. Flint x 2

  6.

“YES! That worked. Haha, I’m getting you figured out, System.” Piling some dried grass and leaves under his sticks, Darren takes out one of his axes and scrapes it on a piece of flint. Nothing happens. Trying again with a little more force, sparks shower on the dried grass and leaves. Nothing seems to catch. Several more tries finally led to the dried grass and leaves catching. Darren slowly adds more and more sticks until he has a small fire going. Taking a page from his movie knowledge, Darren leaps up and shouts, “Aha! Look what I've created! I have made FIRE!” in his best caveman impression. “Haha…ha, oh God I’m losing it. Maybe I should cook my squirrel and go to bed.”

Grabbing a stick, Darren uses his axe to sharpen one end, then skewers the squirrel meat on it. “Ok, guess I just hold it over the fire.” After a few minutes of rotating the squirrel meat over the fire, a message popped up.

Congratulations, you have successfully created Roasted Squirrel. Roasted Squirrel: You gain +3% to Regeneration for the next 8 hours.

Congratulations, you have gained the Cooking skill. Cooking (Basic): You can cook simple meals. When you create these simple meals, you gain a small bonus to your Regeneration skill. You gain 10 XP. XP to next level, 360.

“Sweet. That’s a good perk for cooking. Now, let’s…eat this squirrel. I’ll take ‘Things I never thought I’d say’ for $100, Alex.” Chuckling at his own joke, Darren takes a bite of the roasted meat. Chewing slowly, “Hmm, not as bad as I thought it would be.” After a few more bites, Darren finished his meal. “Guess I should get ready for bed. Wish I had a toothbrush, or a blanket for that matter. Maybe I’ll gather a couple of larger branches before turning in.” Searching the edges of the small clearing, Darren finds some good side branches. Throwing a couple on the fire, he settles into the den the best he can.

SNAP!! Darren jolts awake. What the hell was that? Leaping to his feet and pulling out his axes, Darren looks around the small clearing. Not seeing much by the dying firelight, he kicks some firewood in, trying to increase his sightline. Snapping his head to the right, was that movement or just his imagination? SNAP! There’s definitely something out there. Slowly, Darren takes a couple of steps away from the den. SLAM!!

Unknown creature Sneak Attacks you for 65 points of Critical Damage. You have been knocked prone and stunned for 3 seconds.

The System message flashes in Darren’s vision as he is knocked to the ground. What the hell was that? Unable to move, Darren sees a shape advancing towards him out of the shadows. Identify!

Identification Successful. You have successfully identified a Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon). HP (Health Points) 65/65.

As the information label pops above the creature, Darren gets a good look at it. It looks like it has the body of a wolverine and the head of a wolf, with the temperament of both of them. It leaps towards Darren again. Oh, fuck me! Just as the thought forms, Darren feels that he can move again.

Rolling away from the leaping Forest Striker, Darren avoids the attack. Swiping out with an axe as he gets his feet under him, Darren lands a strike on the creature.

You damage Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) for 10 points of damage. HP 55/65.

Darren and the Forest Striker start circling eachother, waiting to see what the other will do. Just from what I’ve seen, this thing is fast, tough, and it hits like a truck. Darren tries a feint to the right, but the Forest Striker doesn’t move. Well, that was a long shot, adding smart to the list. Staring at the beast across the campfire, a thought crosses Darren’s mind. Here goes nothing. Darren sprints forward. As he gets to the campfire, he kicks out, sending ashes and a flaming log at the Forest Striker.

You damage Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) for 6 points of fire damage. HP 41/65.

You Blinded and Disoriented Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) for 5 seconds.

Yes! Continuing forward, Darren takes advantage of the status conditions he inflicted. Landing three quick attacks before retreating.

You damage, x3, Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) for 15 points of damage, HP 26/65.

The Forest Striker lets out a roar. Glaring at him, Darren sees hate in the Forest Striker’s eyes. The beast moves, tarring up the ground beneath it. Circling the fire, building up speed, the Forest Striker pounces. Darren instinctively crosses his axes in front of him to try to block the coming attack. Bowling into Darren, the Forest Striker rends its claws across Darren’s body.

Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) Frenzy attacks, x4, you for 34 points of damage.

Darren staggers back. Shit that hurt. What is my HP sitting at? Looking at his Health bar, Darren sees 51/150. Shit, that’s not good. We’re both one or two attacks away from going down. Think, Darren, what can you do? Keeping his eyes on the Forest Striker, Darren sees that it looks like it’s getting ready to attack again. Think faster, Darren! A memory flashes in Darren’s mind. That could work. Planting his feet and tightening his grip on his axes, Darren prepares for the coming attack. The Forest Striker rushes towards again, looking to go for the kill. As the Forest Striker bounces, Darren leaps to the side. Dual Chop! Swinging with all his might, Darren connects with the Forest Striker’s ribs.

You damage Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) for 22 points of damage, HP 5/65.

You have critically wounded Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon). Juvenile Forsest Striker receives -15% to speed.

Sliding to a stop on the ground, the Forest Striker lets out a whimper. Darren walks over to the creature. “You started this, but I’m sorry this is how it ends.” Darren swings an axe into the creature’s skull.

Congratulations, you have slain Juvenile Forest Striker (Uncommon) level 2. You gain 60 XP. XP to next level 310.

I wonder what a Skill Scroll is? Like, does it give a skill, or is it a one-time-use battle item? “Identify.”

Identification Successful: You have successfully identified Skill Scroll - Taunt (Basic). A skill scroll that teaches you the Taunt (Basic) skill.

Taunt (Basic - Warrior) Level 1 - Active 15 SP: You challenge a nearby enemy, causing it to focus on you. The affected enemy prioritizes attacking you over your allies for the next 10 seconds. The affected enemy also suffers a -5% accuracy drop to all attacks that do not target you.

“That will be useful if I ever meet up with anyone.” Looking around the small clearing and to the sky, Darren comes to the determination, “I’m not sleeping on the ground the rest of the night.” Before climbing up the tree that has the fox den, Darren throws the remaining wood onto the fire.

Fitfully sleeping the rest of the night, Darren wakes the next morning. “God, I could go for an energy drink right about now.” Leaping down from the branch he used as a bed, Derren stretches. “Let’s take a look at my stats and set out for the day.”

Getting his bearings, Darren continues his trek to the outcropping.

Keeping his eyes peeled, Darren makes steady progress. After an hour or two, he comes upon a small stream. “That looks good.” Squatting down, Darren brings a handful of water to his mouth. Drinking it down, he finds that it is cool and refreshing. Taking a quick look around and not seeing anything, Darren leans down and places is fabest ce in the stream.

I don’t think I need to worry about parasites, and I don’t care right now. This is the best water I’ve ever had. After taking several gulps, Darren gets to his feet. The trees seem to be thinning, and the ground is getting rockier. I must be getting close. Jumping the stream, Darren continues.

After traveling a few more hours, Darren started to notice a change. The trees are definitely getting thinner, and I think the terrain is getting steeper. Turning around, Darren takes a look at where he came. Yep, definitely going upward, I can see the tops of the lower trees from here. Turning back around, Darren picks up his pace. An hour later, Darren sees the outcropping. With excitement, he runs the last yards to the outcropping's edge. Looking out over the outcropping, he sees an immense forest-filled valley. Standing in the center of the valley is a massive Labrynth. “A labyrinth in the middle of a forest, and here I thought the forest would be the labyrinth.” Looking closer at where he is, Darren sees something. “Is that smoke? Is there someone there?” ROAR!!! Darren’s blood runs cold. Turning around, Darren sees a massive bear exiting a cave formed of leaning rocks. A message enters his vision.

You have been affected by the Fear Condition.
