Chapter 3: Hauteeaul

After some deliberation (and breakfast) my father saw me off at the door, holding a satchel. He handed it to me, and opening it revealed a sapphire ball the size of my hand, and a sheathed knife. "The crystal will light up as you near the artifact." He explained.

  "And the knife?" I asked.

"We may be mages, but we can't always rely on magic."

"But I've never used a weapon before." Though I did read much about weapons, that is much different than actually holding one.

"Come now, what's so hard to understand about swish swish stab?" My father replied, laughing. Though I wasn't sure what was funny.

"Well, I'll see you later." I said, putting my hand on the door know. I looked back to see Soleil and my father smiling back.

  "Before supper." He said.

"Before supper." I repeated, then left.

Before me was the coastal town of Haute'eaul. My house, a story larger than the houses beside it was on a small hill from where you could see the whole town. In the distance was a wharf and dozens of boats on the ocean, mostly fishing. On land was a cobbled wall that circled and protected the town which consisted mostly of small hovels. Of course, there were other buildings like the houses of the lord and his knights near the wharf, or the chapel in the town's center.

I descended a set of stairs onto a paved street just wide enough for a single wagon. It was early enough such that there was no one else out and about. "Damn it, I should have asked about that girl." I said to myself, cursing myself for being to embarrassed to ask my father about it. Although seeing the chapel in the distance, I wondered if maybe there was a different father I could ask.

"Which girl?" I stopped, thinking I just heard someone talk. But looking around, there was no one.

So there was only one conclusion "Clearly I have suffered a concussion and undergone a mental breakdown last night." I told myself regaining my composure.

"Wha- the nerve! You're not crazy, and I'm not some figment of your imagination!" The voice spoke again.

I briskly continued walking."You are a voice in my head. Can't get crazier than that. Or you're a devil from hell, come to claim my soul. Either way I'm seeing a priest."

"A devil? That would be cool... but I can at least prove to you I'm really." Eeuna assured me, and I could feel a heat rushing to my palm.

Raising my hand, I could see a flame floating upon it. I was quick to throw it on the ground before I started a fire, or worse "What the hell are you doing? Maybe you're the crazy one."

"But at least YOU'RE not crazy."

"Yes, and left with more questions than answers." I said. I had not read about anything remotely like this. Was her mind inhabiting mine? Did she cast that spell through me, or was it all her? Was I really possessed? Though I suppose if I was, she would not be letting me go to the priest so easily. My mind went back and forth as I travelled the streets.
