A Psi battle of the mind

  Chapter 18

Caroline blinked and stared at him in surprise. “No. Not at all. Not everyone is able to perceive a change when it is activated."

  “That’s weird.” He said.

Caroline giggled. “Why is it weird to you? People are different. Some people are born without sight or hearing.”

Titan started his mouth and then he closed it. “You got me there.”

“When you see magic activated do you see colors?” She asked him.

“Of course. Isn’t that normal?” Titan said.

Caroline stared at him. “Do you see the magic that surrounds your uncle’s body?” She answered by asking another question.

Titan stared at her. “I can’t even see his system menu. The only impression I get is that invisible faint white light.” He said.

Caroline stared at him. “Your uncle is a twin battle mage as I am.”

Titan stared at her. “Dad was a fighter class. You and uncle Charlie are twin battle mages.” He said. He paused before saying anything more.

Caroline had a small grin on her face. “Go on. What’s your question?” She asked.

“I’m a rogue with Psi class. Darious was a Psi with a father that was a wizard. How do people gain Psi abilities?” Titan asked.

“I have no idea. No one does. Well. Maybe you do if you think about it.” She said in a sardonic tone.

“There has to be a pattern though. Right?” Titan said.

Caroline nodded the side of her mouth turned up with a slight grin. “Yes. All Psi class types have a wizard or mage as a parent.” She said

Titan stared at her. “So. The other parent would be a fighter or warrior class too?” He said.

Caroline grinned at him. “Yes. I did know it was a possibility for you to become a Psi."

Titan stared at her with his mouth open and thought about asking what she meant.

The day of his second dungeon raid flashed in his mind. He envisioned the moment he was about to kill a human.

“What is it?” Caroline asked him.

“What happens when a Psi kills a human?” He asked.

Caroline sighed and looked away. “The Psi is different from the magical class. Darious stands as the strongest for a reason. He survived and fought to that position.”

Titan stared at her waiting with a patient look on his face.

“Mom. You didn’t answer my question. I need to know mom.” He said.

Caroline stared at him. “The more power a Psi gains the more they have to deal with insanity and psychopathic thoughts.”

Titan nodded his head. “So Garret. Is he insane or a Psychopath?" He said.

Caroline sighed. “I don’t know. He has managed to maintain his control reasonable well. Far longer then the past Psi Kings.”

Titan snorted, shaking his head. “KIngs? Okay. So there are dungeon crawler kings now.” He said.

Caroline frowned shaking her head. “You don’t realize how much political power a dungeon crawler can have when they start clearing major S-class Dungeons.” She said.

Titan shook his head. “I’m never going to find out. I’m only doing this for a short time and then I’m going back to being an accountant.” He said.

Caroline sighed. “The dungeon you’ve recently cleared?” She said.

“The Tower of Greed. It was a fun time inspite of the danger and hunters.” Titan said.

Caroline stared at him. “Titan. You cleared it in a single day. In your first attempt. That has never been done ever.” She said.

Titan shrugged. “First time for everything. I got the guild extra gold from the event and won the game.” He said.

Caroline studied him closely. “So you don’t want to win in the game?”

Titan pointed a finger to himself. “I am going to win. Your son is a winner.”

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Caroline started to say something but she stopped. Her face froze. Titan felt a stillness as his Psi Focus and Blink Step were activated.

Titan came to his feet beating away a dagger as it was thrown at Caroline. He turned and faced a masked Psi dressed black track suit.

Titan said nothing. Sweat gathered on his brow but he remained silent and waiting.

Neither Titan or the Psi Assassin said anything. Titan didn’t have anything to say nor did want to say anything.

Purple energy spikes lanched out from assassin's body toward Titan and a froze Caroline.

Titan felt his own energy rise as energy whipped out from his mind snatching the spikes out from the air and snapping them in two.

The assassin's body froze and he glared at Titan behind face mask. Again the assassin sent another round of spikes.

Titan countered the same way. Neither one had moved yet the energy in the room was heavy and electric.

They were at a stand still. Titan knew what he was going to do. He was just waiting for a moment.

A purple haze of energy surrounded them. Titan’s focus locked into his target.

  • Wait for the moment, son. Don’t rush it. Strike fast, Strike hard. Strike intently. Focus! Your gifts are your focus and mind. -

  •

Titan heard his father’s instructions in his head. He gripped his Axiom Edge and prepared. He went motionless as his blade became an ebony dark color.

The Psi Assassin lifted up a black envelope and carelessly threw it in his direction.

The letter hit Titan’s chest and fell to the floor at his feet. Titan didn’t react.

Titan watched the Psi Assassin disappear into black smoke.

Caroline touched Titan’s shoulder lightly. “Another Psi came.” She said.

Titan nodded. “He left me a letter on the floor. Don’t touch it.” Titan said.

Titan moved fast, dipping down, snatching it up and quickly opened it. The message was short.

I thought you were lucky. That was a deception. You hid yourself well but we see you now.

The crown belongs to me. I will destroy you to obtain the throne of power. I will wait for you on the hill when you are ready.

  Sincerely, S

Titan sighed, balling up the letter and threw it carelessly to the side with indifference.

He took his seat back at his desk. Caroline calmly walked over to the balled up letter and unrolled it. She studied the message.

“He had his chance and he didn’t do anything. The letter doesn’t mean anything, Mom.” Titan said.

Caroline smiled slowly and glanced up at Titan’s serious face. She stared at him.

Titan sat in his chair. His legs slightly a part his legs resting lightly on his arm rests. His glowed violet.

Caroline sighed. “He didn’t fight you because he wasn’t sure of the outcome.”

Titan stared at her. “He attacked you. If he thought I wouldn't kill him then he was stupid.”

Caroline nodded but she studied him with a steady gaze. “So. What age did you’re father teach you to fight?”

Titan was quiet for a few seconds. “Twelve. Dad stopped when I turned eighteen.” He said.

Caroline frowned at Titan. “Did your father stop teaching you because you wanted to be an accountant?"

Titan shook his head. “I beat him in a fight.” He said.

Caroline stared at him. “Did your father ever tell you about the Psi and dungeon crawling?” She asked.

“No. I never wanted to enter a dungeon and dad respected my choice. He just wanted me to learn how to fight.” Titan said calmly.

Caroline's eyes glowed for a second. “You’re hiding something. Why? Don’t you trust me?” She said.

Titan sat back in his seat. “Dad told me what to do before he died. I’m just doing what he asked me to do.”

Caroline blinked and straightened up and started to say something but she stopped.

“Wait. Deacon gave you a path to go down?” Caroline said.

“Yes.” Titan said. He closed his mouth.

Caroline stared at him. “When did he tell this?”

"Dad left a letter for me that Charlie passed on to me.” Titan said.

“Can I see the letter?” She said,

“Dad told me to burn the letter after I finished reading it.” Titan said.

  “YOU BURNED IT.” Caroline yelled.

“Yes. That’s what Dad wanted. I still have it though.” Titan said and tapped a finger to his own head.

“You’re a Psi. Of course. You memorized the details in the letter.” Caroline said.

“Of course I did.” Titan said with a nod.

Caroline stared at him. “Will you tell me what is in the letter?” She asked.

Titan shook his head. “I can’t. Dad told me not to. You can guess what most of it is though. I have a long way to go. This is just the beginning.” He said.

“Titan. How prepared are you for what is coming? Titan, you have entered into competition for power against the Psi.” Caroline said.

Titan shook his head. “I know my mission. I’ll do whatever it takes to win. Fuck anybody that gets in my way should be worried.” He said.

Caroline stared at him. She snorted in laughter. “Honey. Honey. Do you know what your doing?”

Titan nodded his head. “I think I do. There is something else though. I need your advice.”

Caroline studied his face. “Tell me. I don’t know if I’ll have an answer for your question though.” She said in warning.

Titan folded his hands together. “Dad always told me that focus is my gift.” He said.

Caroline froze but she nodded her head. “Yes. For the Psi and mages Focus is essential to gain power and advancement.”

Titan nodded. “So do the dungeon crawlers with the most Focus points have the highest success rate in dungeon raids?”

Caroline frowned but she nodded her head. “Yes. Psi Class such as Darious Wade.”

“Glenda has over two thousand points in her system menu. Doesn’t that mean she has just as much power as him?” Titan asked.

Caroline grinned showing her teeth. “A sage and Psi Lord are different.”

“Power is power. Isn’t it?” Titan said.

Caroline nodded her head slowly. “Yes. Power is power. However there are positions of hierarchy. A sage is a teacher, adviser. Psi Lords are commanders of power wielders and armies.”

Titan started to ask the reason for it then changed his mind on it. He didn’t care. All cared about was getting money and there was enough immediate issue.

Suddenly there was a loud growling coming from Titan’s stomach.

Caroline smiled. “Come on. I’ll make some dinner for you.” She said.
