Chapter 20 Choosing a hobby and water jug.

After Micha and Neffie took their respective seats busying themselves with conversation I headed over to Brandon at sat next to him. After watching him for a while, I decided to express my opinion. “Are you trying to create a sword spell?” I asked. The question seeming obvious and he looked frustrated because of that. “I am trying to replicate what I saw an adventurer doing before I entered the school. He was able to make his sword emit frost and used it to slay a massive bear.” Though he seemed irritated he answered sincerely. I sat back and said out loud: “I think you might be going about it the wrong way. After all it seems he used his sword more as a focus than as the object the spell is working on.” He looked at me, seeming not to understand what I meant so I simplified it. “A mage who uses a staff does not cast his magic on the staff, but rather uses it as a conduit to amplify the spell. Similarly, if you had a sword that was very good at conducting mana, then you would be able to focus your spell through it.” I explained, trying to make my hint not to obvious. What he had been trying to do was to cast a spell hoping that its effect lasted longer than the duration that mana was applied to it. What he should have been doing was converting his mana into the cold attribute and let that flow through the sword as though he was about to use the sword as a staff to cast the spell. He sat a little, ruminating about what I said when he said to get the idea and looked up. Though there were not many magic swordsmen, seeing as the hero himself had been one, there are usually one of two people who wanted to follow in his footsteps. Some of those are ingenious enough to notice the flow of mana necessary to use the magic through the sword. Seeing as I had learned how to use magic without the need of incantations, I was one of the few who understood this principle. He took the sword, held it straight in front of him, and cast a tier one frost crystal spell. Though natural steel was not the best at conducting mana, it was still enough for the sword to gain a bright sheen and turn cold. The air around the sword seemed to condense as small flakes of snow formed around it. The moment they left the aura of the sheen; they quickly melted and evaporated. Brandon had a look of pure joy on his face. He seemed to be floating as he jumped up and started swinging his sword around cooling the air down as he quickly sheathed it and ran out of the room. ‘He is probably going to the training field to go practise his new technique.’ Adviser said rhetorically. ‘Who asked you.’ I replied in my head feeling his explanation as redundant. After the door slammed shut, I noticed the rest looking at me with slightly suspicious expressions, Misha merely looked surprised. Neffie walked over and spoke. “Seriously another one helped with their projects?” her expression becoming exasperated before continuing. “Do not you have projects of your own you are working on or are you just so “genius” that you have already figured them out.” She said “Genuis” with a lump of sarcasm dripping from her mouth, she was right of course. ‘I can’t just sit around helping everyone else achieve their hobbies end, I need to get on for myself.’ The real problem was that the things I was currently working on was not so mundane that I could show it off after all the kind of magic I was using was essentially unique to me thanks to my knowledge of physics and quantum mechanics. After all, showing of that I was trying to create a spell to make a small amount of electrical current run in someone else’s brain in specific locations to literally create illusions for only them was not something even someone in the top ten was supposed to accomplish. ‘I know… I’ll just make small inconsequential artifacts that thou cool and practical, does not take that much to understand use or recreate. Not only will that still increase my reputation, but it would be both flashy enough to make me seem like a genius when thinking outside the box and finding unorthodox ways of utilising magic, but it will still be within the realms of expectation for someone exceptional, allowing me to continue my actual personal projects in secret. Like a master magician in my old world, giving a shiny bauble to distract the masses while slowly doing the real trick outside of others attention.’ Adviser seemed to agree while a feeling of contemplation came from him along with a grunt of impression. After having had decided on that I merely said. “Well yeah I do have some things I have been brainstorming quite recently.” My words seemingly surprising her as I went to the table with alchemical equipment. “Hey Demetri mind if I use this.” I said as I pointed to a jar on the table. “Sure, go ahead.” He said seemingly curious as to what I was planning after taking a seat I took out a carving tool from the communal tool box that was in the corner of the room next to the seat. ‘Okay adviser your time to shine I need you to help me keep my hands steady enough for this kind of work.’ What I was planning on using first was the magic script to enchant the beaker, I would later figure out how to create true artifacts but enchantments seemed like a good idea for now. Thou I had created many things as a child here I tended to use magic to not need that much finesse, after all this was how most current farming equipment and smithing tools were enchanted for their movement, but I had a great idea. ‘If this script tends to handle the words the same way a computer takes prompts, it might be possible to use my coding knowledge from earth with this.’ Thou I had been a physics nerd, any true nerd knew coding, all I needed was to figure out how the script magic kind of compiled the basic instructions made by the current enchanters of this age. first most people like Demetri just tended to write one word in it like ice or cold and the surrounding area tended to then have that effect when they supplied the script some mana.’ I was wondering if the thing that allowed the language script to cause this phenomenon would be able to understand clearer instructions. A theory already kind of proven as some enchanters just cast entire spells in objects with the script magic. So, I carved my first ever code into a jug. My plan was to make a jug of never-ending water that always gave ice cold water. To anyone who knew coding in my previous world would have laughed at my rudimentary coding skills but it went some thing like this. “when object(water jug) is applied manna, then, use water creation spell (water condense) to fill till point variable ten. Else use cold spell(chill).” This would do what I wanted but it would need a small amount of water to start of with, otherwise it would just make the jug cold. Adviser helped me remember some of my coding experience from my previous life to complete the spell, after I supplied manna, the jar quickly filled with water till the point I marked as ten and when it was full I felt the entire jug turn cold. After which I poured myself a glass of ice-cold water and set the jug down condensation sticking to the sides. As I sipped the others seeing I was done with fiddling with the jar came over to see what I had done. “You know a lot more mana script than me.” Demetri before continuing. “But what’s with such a large incantation.” I told him to pour mana into it and when he did a look of astonishment seemed to cross the groups faces, “wow the more mana I pour into it the colder it gets but the water only goes to a certain point, how did you do that!” James said when it was his turn to inspect the jug. I merely smiled they all seemed really impressed even thou they did not fully understand what I had done. I was a little impressed, ‘hmmm seems that this world compiles things even better than some of the programs I had to use back on earth and because I am in possession of the object that I am putting variables on they can be simply carved in the area or location I want the variable to work with. If I did not know better, I would almost say that magic in this world was made to be used by some programmer. I laughed bitterly on the inside keeping my face happy and a little smug. The warm glow of accomplishment accompanied me all the way to my room and into sleep that night, it seemed I had something new I wanted to work on again. ***
