The First Descent

CHAPTER 21 — THE FIRST DESCENT

The gods had tried to descend once.

  Reality had rejected them.

Tonight, the sky would try again.

Paris Ardent stood on the rooftop of a half-abandoned apartment building overlooking the city.

The wind carried the scent of rain and distant electricity, though the storm from earlier had already passed. Far below him, the streets were alive with headlights and late-night traffic.

  Normal life.

  People laughed.

  Cars moved.

  Music drifted from open windows.

None of them knew the universe had almost torn itself apart an hour earlier.

Paris leaned against the concrete ledge and stared upward.

  The sky looked calm.

But he could feel the tension in it.

  A subtle pressure.

Like the atmosphere itself was bracing for impact.

  His phone vibrated.

The golden interface of the divine chat illuminated his face.

  Messages were already appearing.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Descent vector recalculating.

[Goddess of Fate]: Probability instability reduced.

[Blood Saint]: Structural resistance remains high.

  Paris frowned.

  “You’re trying again.”

  Another message appeared.

[Abyssal Observer]: The variable observes the sky.

  Paris shook his head slightly.

“You guys really do see everything.”

  His phone buzzed again.

[Demon Emperor Baal]: Curiosity is natural.

  Paris didn’t respond.

  Instead he watched the sky.

The stars above the city shimmered faintly.

  Then—

  One of them moved.

At first it looked like a satellite drifting across the atmosphere.

  But satellites didn’t grow brighter.

  They didn’t burn gold.

  The streak of light intensified.

Cutting across the sky like a blade.

  Paris exhaled slowly.

  “Here we go.”

  The chat exploded with activity.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Descent initiated.

[Goddess of Fate]: Causal anchors stabilizing.

  [Blood Saint]: Manifestation window opening.

Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

  The golden streak grew larger.

  Closer.

  Brighter.

It wasn’t falling like a meteor.

  It was descending with purpose.

  Controlled.

  Deliberate.

Paris felt the air shift around him.

Gravity pulled strangely for a brief moment.

  Then corrected itself.

  Reality was adjusting.

  His phone buzzed again.

[Abyssal Observer]: The variable destabilizes manifestation radius.

  Paris frowned.

  “Again?”

  The golden streak flickered.

  Just slightly.

  But this time—

  It didn’t stop.

  Instead, it corrected course.

  Moving several kilometers east.

  Away from him.

  The chat updated instantly.

  [Goddess of Fate]: Manifestation redirected.

[Blood Saint]: Distance from anomaly increasing.

Paris let out a quiet breath.

  “So you figured it out.”

If a god tried to descend near him—

  Reality rejected it.

But if the descent happened far enough away—

  The system could stabilize.

  Another message appeared.

[Demon Emperor Baal]: Adaptation is the foundation of survival.

  Paris muttered quietly.

“Yeah. Thanks for the philosophy lesson.”

  The golden streak brightened again.

  Then—

  It stopped.

Suspended high above the eastern side of the city.

  The sky warped.

  Not violently.

  Subtly.

Like heat distorting the air above asphalt.

  Paris felt the pressure immediately.

  The same feeling from before.

The same presence that had once been confined to the heavens.

Now pressing against the mortal world.

  His phone buzzed.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Manifestation threshold reached.

[Goddess of Fate]: Probability alignment achieved.

  [Blood Saint]: Descent complete.

  Paris whispered quietly.

  “You actually did it.”

  The sky split.

  Not with lightning.

  With geometry.

Lines of gold unfolded across the atmosphere.

  Invisible to ordinary people.

  But to Paris—

  The lattice had opened.

  Something stepped through.

The being that emerged was not what Paris expected.

  It was humanoid.

  Tall.

Wrapped in flowing light that resembled both armor and storm clouds.

White-gold lightning moved slowly beneath its skin like restrained thunder.

Its feet touched the rooftop of a distant skyscraper.

  And the building trembled.

  Not from weight.

  From recognition.

  Paris’s phone vibrated violently.

  The chat erupted.

  [Blood Saint]: Manifestation confirmed.

[Goddess of Fate]: Sovereign presence detected.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Mortal-plane entry successful.

  Paris whispered softly.

  “So that’s one of you.”

  The figure lifted its head.

  And looked directly at him.

  Even from several kilometers away—

  Paris knew.

  It could see him.

  The chat updated.

[Thunder Sovereign]: The variable has been located.

  Paris blinked.

  “Wait—what?”

  Another message appeared.

[Goddess of Fate]: Visual confirmation achieved.

  [Blood Saint]: Probability alignment complete.

Paris stared at the distant god standing on the skyscraper.

“How can it see me from that far?”

  A new message appeared.

[Demon Emperor Baal]: Because you are no longer hidden.

  Paris felt a chill.

  No longer hidden.

The being on the skyscraper took a step forward.

Lightning cracked softly across the clouds above it.

Its voice carried across the city.

  Not loud.

  But impossible to ignore.

  “Mortal.”

  Paris froze.

The voice echoed through the bones of the city itself.

  “You distort the lattice.”

  Paris swallowed.

  “Well.”

  “That’s not exactly my fault.”

The god stepped closer to the edge of the skyscraper.

  Wind spiraled around its body.

The storm that had passed hours earlier began forming again.

  The chat updated instantly.

  [Blood Saint]: Atmospheric energy responding.

[Goddess of Fate]: Storm convergence forming.

  Paris muttered quietly.

“You brought the weather with you.”

The god tilted its head slightly.

  Studying him.

  “You are the variable.”

  Paris crossed his arms.

  “That’s what everyone keeps saying.”

  Lightning flashed behind the figure.

  “You interfere with fate.”

  Paris shrugged.

“I prefer the term ‘improving it.’”

  The god’s eyes glowed brighter.

  “You alter the Architect’s design.”

  Paris hesitated.

That part was harder to joke about.

  The wind grew stronger.

The clouds above the city darkened again.

  “You must be measured.”

  Paris sighed.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?”

  The god lifted one hand.

Lightning gathered slowly in its palm.

  The divine chat exploded.

[Goddess of Fate]: Sovereign preparing measurement.

  [Blood Saint]: Energy accumulation detected.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Probability collapse possible.

Paris looked up at the storm forming above the skyline.

  “Seriously?”

“You guys always start with lightning.”

The god raised its hand higher.

  Thunder rolled across the city.

  “You will be tested.”

Paris felt something stir beneath reality.

  The hum.

  Stronger now.

  Responding to the presence above.

  His phone buzzed again.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Sub-structural pressure increasing.

Paris looked down at the ground.

  “…Uh oh.”

  Another message appeared.

[Blood Saint]: The second anomaly reacts.

The pavement beneath his feet shimmered.

  Just slightly.

Like glass reflecting something deep below.

  The remnant.

It had felt the god arrive.

  And it was waking up.

Paris looked back at the divine figure across the skyline.

  Lightning crackled in its hand.

  Thunder rolled.

  Above him—

  A god.

  Below him—

  Something older than the system.

And both of them were reacting to him.

  Paris sighed.

  “You know what?”

He looked up at the sky.

“This is starting to feel personal.”

  The god’s lightning intensified.

  “You will submit to measurement.”

  Paris rolled his shoulders.

  “I tried that once already.”

  Lightning exploded across the clouds.

  The storm roared.

  And far beneath the lattice—

  Something ancient began to rise.
