Ch. 6 - The Book of Knowledge

Closing the door behind her, Liza retreated into the library before her stamina depleted, revelling in the feeling of invigoration that filled her when she came into contact with the ambient magica of the Hall. She silently took in the feeling for a few minutes, before reflecting on her excursion.

The description of the plant had said it preferred the "Particular mix of Earth magica and Death magica".

'So I'm in a Dungeon, huh... Between the "Earth" layer and the "Death" layer, no less. Wonder what that means. "Death magica"... Sounds pretty hardcore.'

The insinuation gave her the heebie jeebies, that's for sure.

Willings the thoughts down, she decided to not take it at face value. Who knew? Maybe this 'Death' layer was filled with oranges and rainbows? Whatever those were.

She puffed and hovered over to the new table she'd summoned. Well, copied, but who cared for such technicalities.

Upon it, she decided to try out a skill she'd been very interested in from the moment she'd read it.

  The Book Creation skill!

Book Creation 1: It is The Librarian's duty to eternally fill the library with as many books as possible to serve the Visitors. Types of books include: Book of Knowledge, Book of Experience: [Locked], Notebook [Locked], Scroll: [Locked].

It seemed Liza would finally be able to actually create something! HUZZAH! She couldn't make all the different types of books yet, but alas, she was but a freshly spawned babe, new to the world and it's magics. All would come, in time.

Thus, Liza, The Wise, willed the skill to create a Book of Knowledge without much thought, and, in her own special way, buckled.

As all the magica in her little, blue form drained, wafting out of her like a waterfall without scruples for gravity as it quickly swirled and formed a ball or energy over the table, compressing more and more until it finally expanded and contorted into the shape of a single, gray book.

The book was twice as large as her own book-body, though entirely too thin, as if it contained no pages whatsowever. It's cover was also gray, looking more like some boring, bare pamplett than anything else.

  Slightly dissapointed,

Slightly dissapointed, yet very intreagued, Liza approached the book-pamplett-thing and willed it to open.

Within was a single, blank page made from a creamy-white parchment that looked soft to the touch. She internally scrunkled her brows whatever those were, and flipped the book to see the back.

The back was just as uneventful as the front, with letter line nor embellishment adorning it.

  'Hmph,' she puffed.

Reading through the skill again, she checked if she'd done anything wrong, but came to the conclution that she hadn't.

Which was odd, she thought. For having the grandios name 'The Living Library', having books like these seemed like a waste.

Reading though the other skills for clues, though, something clicked.

She had created a book, yes. But what was the use of an empty book with no knowledge to fill its pages?

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Book Suffusion 1: It is The Librarian's duty to fill their books with the knowledge they attain, making sure the books they create have only relevant and correct knowledge.

Her passion reignited, she patiently waited until her magica was topped off before casting the skill.

An ethereal, blue-tinted mist flowed out from her mind where it hovered over the chair, slowly, yet with increasing speed entering into the book, like the book itself was a hungry vortex. As the suffution proscess came to an end, the book seemingly gained a page or two, and the boring, grey cover was tinted a light, pleasant green.

The cover also saw an additional change. On the front-side of the newly formed Book of Knowledge, a title stood, proud of place in a bold, yet elegant font.

Liza wished she had hands, whateverthosewere! She would clapp and holler like she'd just created the Universe itself!!

'A book!! MY book! AAA! Muehehehehehehehihi,' she laughed, evilly.

Not daring to check how much magica that had taken out of her, as she knew it was a lot, she immediately opened the book to see what had changed, then laughed again, zooming around inside the little room like a gremlin with the zoomies.

The reason? A prompt, in the form of another blue screen, had appeared in front of her face.

[Would you like to add a Foreword?]

She responded without missing a beat.

  'Hihi, yes!!'

Now, while she might come off as childish or unproffessional, Liza really did want to take her job seriously. She didn't know why, but it filler her heart, if she even had one, with a sense of purpose to a degree she couldn't easily put into words.

"Slumping down" in the chair, the dislodged mind though long and hard on what kind of foreword would be worthy of her new title.

  The Librarian.

it was a heavy title, she thought. There were only two words in it, but the existence of the 'The' made her non-existent stomach churn with the not-so-hidden implication of grandiosity of it.

But... did it really need to be so heavy? Did she need to?

She thought about it for a while, then made a decision; One that would impact the entire rest of her life on this planet - not that she knew, of course.

If she was going to live here, in this room, for the rest of her forseeable future, she was damn well going to make it a home! Damn the expectations - she was going to be all she could be!

  Herself!

The desicion made, she furiously wrote a very welcoming and kind introductory message.

  The Felitos Plant

  by

  The Librarian

  ***

  Welcome, Visitor.

There are many places one can go to attain the knowledge of the Cosmos, I imagine,

thus I am eternally grateful my humble library has been graced with your visitation.

  May knowledge prevail.

The Felitos plant of the Silent Wafters branch in the Verillion family is a common type of foliage typically found in the intersection between the first and second layers of the Dungeon, preffering this region's particular mix of naturally occouring Earth magica and the more dense Death magica over those of other regions.

The plant comes in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes ranging from vermillion, to green, and sometimes - as seen with the magica-charged variations - blue. Big and small, spherical and spiralling, the Felitos plant has a wide variety of ways it decides to present itself, all depending on a number of different factors.

Historically-y, the plant has be-en us-used by-y many of the common-co-common folk of the- of the- [REDACTED] to aid in the- in the healing of [REDACTED], bo-boosting...

'There! Not mysterious or grand-sounding at all - totally casual and laid-back,' she nodded to herself.

Overlooking her first ever book, Liza practically squeeled and began zooming around the room as she'd done before.

  Then the door opened.
