You (14)

Strange, isn’t it? To wake up again in a place like this, all alone, by yourself with a bodiless voice talking to you in a white metallic room. You might not recall how you sluggishly lift yourself out of your bed and almost bump your head. Perhaps you thought you were waking up after a bad hangover. Going through the same usual steps as you lift yourself out of bed and throw your sheets to one side.

Me? I’m the room… well, I am actually the spaceship you are in. You can look out the window if you really want. However, the last star had already burnt out long ago. To be honest with you. Space is immeasurably boring without any stimuli of any kind. A black canvas of nothingness. A dead galaxy, a very dead universe.

I know what you might be thinking. Your bedroom looks like any generic sci-fi room you read or saw in some show or movie. But you already know that. You can look around and scan every corner a hundred times over. Nothing has changed, no matter how many times you close your eyes or move your head. It is true that I can conjure up any design of my choosing or architecture from any era. Trust me, I hate the look of it as well. The bed near the window, the white tilling and silver walls with pipes snacking out of it and connecting to a random port. I am more than aware of how ugly and generic it all looks, but I believe it is appropriate for your home to look like this.

Ah, it seems you are already aware of the changes to your body. That funny feeling when you move your arm and how you clench your hand into a fist. It is all gone now. Your skin is smooth and no longer dry and oily. Your hair? Perfect. I think it is best that you don’t have to deal with the tedium of brushing and coming here every time.

However, I know that face. That look of confusion. No worries, I suppose I need to be blunt with you this time around. You have died. Your body turned to dust as the anvils of time moved along without the care in the world and when your sun finally engulfed your planet as it too died a slow death. No, I removed the knowledge of your death from your memory so the transfer to your new body is smooth and without unnecessary complications. Your death isn’t going to be kept secret either. I will reveal how you died. For now, I encourage you to enjoy your reawakening into the living world.

How did you come back to life? That is a good question. After the last star died and the last atom decayed into nothing. What remains is your soul, a complex structure of energy which also contains your memories. Well, a fragment of your memories. Was floating around in space. I just found it and took the initiative to put them together.

Sadly, no one has celebrated your birthday for billions of years or has any memory of you, unfortunately. After the first thousand years, your name is nothing but a trend in the history books. Yes, it sucks to hear it. But a lot of people shared the same name as you. Your parents weren’t as clever or creative as they thought they were.

Okay, you got me. You are not billions of years old. In truth, I can give you a painfully long number. But after one google, your mind will fail to comprehend the size of the number and thus, your age. However, happy one billionth birthday! Don’t worry, your knees and back should be fine. For a human, that is.

Anyway, when I found your soul. I collected it and crammed it into a body of my design that should replicate what you were. No, it isn’t a body of meat and bone. It is a complex machine that is almost an exact perfect copy of your body and how it functions. You can spit, you can pee, you can sweat. But in the end, you are a robot. Don’t worry! You can do everything a human can do, and you will be in immense pain if you try to rip your face off. All this means is your body is artificially made, by me, of course.

No, don’t have a moment of crisis. Trust me, it will only be a waste of our time. In your time, you will pass for human. Even other advanced races will think you are human as well and will all fail to detect any form of synthetic material. They will find chromosomes, as that is the first thing you are thinking of. Of course I gave you them! Theoretically you should be able to procreate, but I advise you to not do that. Not like you had a chance to anyway. You are a complex machine of my design. Well, you are actually the least impressive form of technology on this ship.

Ah, where are my manners!? Welcome! You have so many questions and it will not be the last time you ask them. But please, explore the ship. As you walk around, I will happily answer any question you may have.

There are two doors. Don’t take the one on the right, that’ll lead you to your bathroom. Take the door to your left and head down the hall. As you go down, perhaps you want to go get a quick bite to .

Oh yes! That is a fair question to ask. What if you get sick or injured? . I will warn you, it isn’t what your room looks like. I make sure to put the best equipment in there. Mostly because the medical practices of the 21st century are so barbaric and savage compared to what I have at my disposal.

You want to… explore the universe? A strange request, as there is nothing else out there but space. . I will happily let you take the helm. Maybe you will like what I really look like. This time, you might even learn what I am.

Perhaps, before you walk around and do your things. Maybe you are interested in a story?
