The forest of despair, chapter 1, Darkness Unleashed

One day in In the quiet corners of the Mushroom Kingdom, there was a forgotten realm—a dimension that existed parallel to the world known to Mario and his friends. This world, once vibrant and full of life, was a place where spirits roamed freely, neither trapped in the mortal world nor confined to the afterlife. It was ruled by King Boo, a mischievous but somewhat harmless ghost king, who ruled over the spirits with his usual tricks and pranks. But this peaceful existence was not to last.

King Boo, always seeking more power and control, grew increasingly frustrated with the limited influence he had over the living world. Despite his abilities to possess objects and haunt the living, he craved something more—an eternal reign that stretched beyond the boundaries of his dimension. He began experimenting with dark magic, summoning forbidden rituals that drew on the energies of both the living and the dead. King Boo’s hunger for power led him to unearth an ancient artifact: the Cursed Crystal, a relic so dark it had the ability to warp entire dimensions.

Using the Cursed Crystal, King Boo’s magic spread like a plague, slowly corrupting the very fabric of his dimension and mushroom kingdom with dark magic consuming charactes-. The once lush landscapes twisted into dark, decaying forests, and the skies turned a permanent shade of deep purple. The spirits, once free and content, became twisted by the dark magic, turning into ghastly, aggressive specters, their minds consumed by the same darkness that plagued the world. Even the ground beneath the dimension’s surface seemed to pulse with an eerie, unnatural energy, as if the dimension itself was suffering.

As the dimension crumbled, King Boo’s power grew exponentially. He realized the true extent of the Cursed Crystal’s abilities—it could not only corrupt the dimension, but could also open rifts to the living world. This gave him the ability to pull the very essence of darkness into the Mushroom Kingdom, with plans to conquer it as well.

But with every spell cast, King Boo’s soul began to fragment. The immense dark energy was overwhelming, and he found himself slowly slipping into madness. His once playful demeanor turned bitter and cruel, his motives warped as his hunger for control transformed into an obsession to break free of the crystal’s grip. He no longer just wanted to rule—he wanted to completely erase the line between the living and the dead, trapping both worlds in eternal darkness under his reign.

In a desperate bid to stop him, the ghosts and spirits who had once served King Boo tried to rebel, but the darkness was too strong. The dimension was falling apart, its very core destabilizing as King Boo’s power threatened to tear the universe in two. It was during this chaos that a rift appeared, connecting the Mushroom Kingdom to the twisted dimension. Mario, Luigi, and their friends were unwittingly drawn into the conflict as they ventured into the forest, unaware of the true source of the darkness that now consumed the land... and then a huge explosion swept across both worlds almost destroying everything in Mario's world and all the color to be gone- just black and white only the characters had color but everything in their world was black and gray and a forest of illusion took over with depressed/sad and almost no face expressions look on the trees's faces with boos taking over and living in the shadows and then the entire group disappeared...

Mario found himself wandering deep into the forest, haunted by the deaths of his friends. Yoshi’s severed tongue hung grotesquely from a tree branch, and Luigi’s cap lay nearby, tattered and stained. Overcome with grief, Mario wept, believing his brother to be dead. Suddenly, a Boo crept up behind him, knife in hand.

At the last second, Luigi emerged from the shadows, wielding his Poltergust. He sucked up the Boo and its knife, then embraced his brother, assuring him he was alive. However, the curse of darkness that had plagued the land still lingered, and Luigi’s strange behavior worried Mario. His tongue appeared sharper and his eyes were a bit more black than normal, but Mario set aside his concerns for now as the brothers resolved to fight the encroaching evil and save their loved ones.

Meanwhile, When the first ripples of King Boo’s dark magic reached the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser couldn’t ignore the unnatural shift in the air. The skies over his castle darkened, and an unsettling stillness spread through his domain. Reports from his troops spoke of shadows moving on their own and an eerie chill creeping through the halls. Then came the attack.

Out of nowhere, a swarm of Boos descended upon Bowser’s castle. These were no ordinary Boos; their forms twisted, their eyes glowing with malevolent energy. They tore through his defenses effortlessly, overwhelming even the strongest Koopa Troop soldiers. With his home overrun, Bowser had no choice but to grab the Koopalings and flee into the surrounding forest, hoping to regroup and find a way to reclaim his castle.

The forest, however, offered no sanctuary. The further they ventured, the more twisted and unrecognizable the land became. Trees with gnarled branches loomed over them, their faces etched with emotionless stares. The air was thick with the sound of distant wails, and even the ground beneath their feet seemed to shift unnaturally.

Bowser pressed on, determined to protect his children, but the oppressive darkness of the forest began to wear on all of them. The Koopalings tried to stay brave, but whispers from the shadows, fleeting movements, and the occasional appearance of glowing eyes in the distance made them question their safety.

As they traveled deeper, Bowser began to notice signs of the forest's corruption: claw marks on trees, broken remnants of what seemed to be another group’s camp, and dark stains on the ground that hinted at a terrible fate. It was clear they weren’t alone in the forest, but whatever else was out there wasn’t friendly.

The turning point came when they stumbled upon a clearing, only to see the rift in the sky that connected their world to King Boo’s dimension. The swirling vortex crackled with dark energy, and through it, Bowser could see the malevolent ghost king watching. A chilling laugh echoed through the woods as King Boo taunted them, promising that the Mushroom Kingdom would soon fall.

Realizing the full extent of the danger, Bowser led the Koopalings deeper into the cursed forest, desperate to find a way to stop King Boo and save their world. But the more they pushed forward, the more the forest seemed to close in around them, separating them from their usual strength and unity. Bowser descended deeper into madness. Until a lighting bolt of black magic struck around him him and all the koopalings stared and wondered what happened, Bowser seemed normal so far... but then Wendy asked if he was ok and Bowser got mad and killed Wendy in a fit of rage, he forced the remaining Koopalings—Ludwig, Roy, Morton, Larry, and Iggy—lemmy- to follow him through the forest. Then Lemmy got attacked by Bowser and he just stared into Lemmy's soul... and he grabbed his sharpest nair and sliced Lemmy's face right off with one slash with dark magic..The fear was palpable, especially after Bowser gruesomely killed Lemmy, leaving his severed head behind. Desperate to escape, Morton and Roy hatched a plan to flee with Ludwig’s help. They approached him, begging him to use his magic to create a shield during their escape.

Terrified but knowing they had no other choice, Ludwig agreed. The Koopalings secretly spread the plan among their siblings, including Junior, who struggled with his loyalty to his father. But when Junior tapped Bowser on the knee to talk, Bowser turned on him with murderous intent. Just as Bowser struck, Iggy leaped in, pulling Junior to safety.

Bowser’s fury was unmatched, but Ludwig conjured a magical shield, and the Koopalings made a desperate run for their lives, fleeing into the forest. Bowser chased them briefly before deciding to abandon them, consumed by his dark goal to summon King Boo and plunge the world into eternal darkness.

As the Koopalings ran, Boos swarmed the forest laughing like crazy, separating some of them from the group.

Terrified and alone, the scattered Koopalings now faced the dangers of the forest, unsure if they’d ever reunite. Those still together pressed on, hoping to find Mario and beg for his protection, even if it meant seeking help from their sworn enemy,

Meanwhile on Mario's side, As the brothers trekked deeper into the cursed forest, the oppressive atmosphere grew thicker, the eerie silence weighed down by the distant wails of unseen spirits. The air was stifling, and Mario's throat felt dry, the relentless heat and dark magic suffocating him. He could feel the pull of the curse seeping into his very bones, but he pushed through, staying close to Luigi.

“Mario, I’m going to find us some water. Stay here. Don’t move,” Luigi said, his voice low and heavy with a strange undertone. The normally playful brother seemed distant, his eyes glinting with a darkness Mario couldn’t quite place.

Mario nodded, though uncertainty crept into his chest. He watched Luigi disappear into the shadows of the twisted trees, his silhouette swallowed by the mist that lingered between the gnarled trunks. Without his brother by his side, the forest felt even more suffocating, the sense of something watching him growing stronger.

Sitting down on a broken log that had once been part of a mighty tree, Mario exhaled deeply. His fingers brushed against the rough bark, and the world around him felt... wrong. The trees, once whispering softly in the wind, now seemed to lean in closer, their twisted faces contorting with expressions of sorrow and anger. The fog grew thicker, and an unsettling feeling settled deep in Mario’s gut.

Minutes passed. Then hours. The forest remained still. Too still.

Suddenly, a rustling sound came from behind him. Mario’s heart skipped a beat, and he turned quickly, expecting to see Luigi. But instead, a figure emerged from the mist—a distorted version of his brother. Luigi’s face was twisted, his eyes black pits of emptiness, and his mouth stretched into an unsettling grin. His body seemed to warp, moving with an unnatural jerking motion, like a puppet being controlled by strings.

“M-Mario...” the twisted figure called out in a voice that was not his brother’s. It was hollow, distorted, like a warped echo. The figure stepped closer, its form flickering between Luigi and something far darker.

Mario’s stomach twisted with dread. “L-Luigi?” he asked, his voice trembling. His brother’s body—if that’s what it was—lumbered closer, the air growing colder with each step.

The figure laughed, a chilling sound that echoed through the forest. “I’m here, Mario,” it whispered. “I’ve always been here. Don’t you see? This is who I am now.”

Mario tried to stand, but his legs felt weak, as though the ground beneath him was pulling him in. His breath quickened. “No... this isn’t real! Luigi, where are you?!”

But the twisted figure only grinned wider, its eyes gleaming with malice. “I’m the one who stays. I’m the one who will always be here...”

Mario's mind was racing. This wasn’t his brother. This wasn’t the Luigi he knew and loved. It was the forest—its twisted magic warping his perceptions, feeding on his fears, making him question everything. But the illusion was so strong, the creature's voice so convincing, that it felt like Luigi was right there, just out of reach.

In desperation, Mario closed his eyes and called out. “Luigi! I know it’s you! Please, where are you?!” He could hear the faint sound of footsteps, but they were distant. His voice cracked as the vision of the twisted Luigi grew stronger, more aggressive, like it was feeding off his doubt.

The figure stepped forward again, its grotesque form looming over Mario. It reached out with a hand, fingers stretching unnaturally long.

Mario’s heart raced. He couldn’t let this trickery control him. He took a deep breath, clenching his fists, and his mind screamed for his brother.

“Luigi, you’re alive! I know you are!”

In that instant, the vision of the twisted Luigi flickered and began to dissolve, the darkness lifting just a fraction. Mario’s heart pounded in his chest as he heard the faint sound of Luigi’s voice in the distance, calling his name.

  “Mario!”

It was real. The twisted illusion was just that—an illusion, born from the forest’s magic. Mario quickly stood, shaking the dread from his mind as he searched the fog for his brother. The forest might be messing with him, but he wouldn’t let it win.

“Luigi!” Mario called, his voice more confident now. The shadows shifted, but in the distance, he saw the faint outline of his brother, walking toward him, his form clear and steady.

The twisted figure, now vanishing like mist, let out one final mocking laugh before fading away into the darkness, leaving Mario standing alone, breathless, but resolute.

"Luigi, please... hurry," Mario muttered, waiting for his brother to return, hoping that the forest’s grip on him would break, and the real Luigi would finally come back.

As Mario waited, his heart pounding with a mix of relief and lingering fear, the faint silhouette of his brother became clearer. The forest seemed to breathe around him, but the oppressive atmosphere had lessened, and Mario could finally feel a glimmer of hope. His mind raced, wondering how much of the forest’s illusion he had just fallen victim to.

And then, from the fog, Luigi emerged, holding a small bucket filled with water. His green overalls were slightly dirtied from his search, but he looked the same—his face warm with concern, his eyes full of care.

"Hey, Mario, I found some water!" Luigi said, his voice kind and familiar. He smiled softly and held out the bucket to his brother. “You alright? You’ve been here a while.”

Mario, overwhelmed with emotion, stared at the water in the bucket for a moment, but his gaze quickly shifted back to Luigi. His vision blurred with tears as the weight of everything, the twisted forest, the illusion, and the fear of losing his brother, finally broke through.

Without a word, Mario suddenly threw himself into Luigi's arms, his sobs loud and uncontrollable. He clung to his brother, his chest heaving as the tears streamed down his face. “Luigi... I thought I lost you...” he choked out between sobs.

Luigi stood frozen for a moment, clearly startled by the sudden outburst. He had never seen Mario this broken before, not even during the darkest moments they’d faced. The water sloshed in the bucket as Luigi held Mario, unsure of what to do, but instinctively, he wrapped his arms around his brother, pulling him close.

“Mario... What’s wrong?” Luigi asked, his voice laced with confusion and concern. He gently pulled back, looking at his brother with wide, uncertain eyes. “Are you okay? You’re acting... strange.”

Mario wiped his tears, still sniffling. His mind raced, trying to explain everything—the twisted vision of Luigi, the way the forest played with his mind—but the words didn’t come. He couldn’t put it into words. All he knew was that Luigi was real, and for now, that was all that mattered.

“I— I just... I thought I saw you, but it wasn’t you... It was...” Mario trailed off, still trying to catch his breath, his hand gripping onto Luigi’s sleeve tightly. “The forest... it’s messing with my head.”

Luigi’s expression softened, but a flicker of worry passed through his eyes. He knew his brother was strong, but he’d never seen Mario so shaken before. “It’s okay, Mario. I’m here. You’re not alone.” Luigi gave him a reassuring pat on the back, though a deep concern lingered in his gaze.

But Mario didn’t let go. He continued to hold onto his brother, his sobs slowing, but the tears kept coming. Luigi, still unsure of what was truly going on, held him in return, wondering just how much the forest had affected Mario.

"You're gonna be alright, Mario," Luigi whispered, rubbing his brother’s back gently. "We’ll get through this. We’ve always gotten through things together."

The brothers stood there, locked in a quiet embrace, as the dark forest surrounded them, but for the moment, the fear of losing each other seemed to dissipate.

Luigi gripped his flashlight tightly, its cold metal handle steadying his trembling hands. The forest had grown eerily quiet, the usual rustling of creatures replaced by an unsettling stillness that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. The light from the flashlight cut through the thick fog, casting long, distorted shadows on the gnarled trees that loomed around him. His breath was shallow, his heart pounding with every step he took.

The further he ventured with his brother, the darker the forest became, as if the very land itself was closing in on him. He could feel the weight of the curse in the air, a dense pressure that made it hard to think, to breathe. Every crack of a twig underfoot seemed amplified, echoing into the silence like a warning. Luigi could no longer ignore the sense that something—or someone—was watching him from the shadows. His footsteps faltered for a moment, and he quickly scanned the area with the beam of his flashlight.

It was then that he saw it—an unsettling flicker in the darkness, barely perceptible but unmistakable. A shadow moved with unnatural speed, its form shifting as if it was trying to hide. Luigi’s stomach churned. The shadows weren't just playing tricks on his eyes. Something in the forest was alive, and it was closing in on him.

Suddenly, a soft, cold breeze swept through the trees, and a faint, mocking laugh echoed from the distance. Luigi’s breath caught in his throat as the laugh grew louder, deeper, and more menacing. He knew that laugh.

  King Boo.

The Boo king's presence felt stronger now, his twisted magic twisting the very fabric of reality. Luigi tightened his grip on the flashlight, trying to steady himself. The darkness of the forest felt alive, as if it was working with King Boo’s dark power to trap him here. And just as the shadows closed in, Luigi heard it—the whispering voice of the Boo, taunting him from the darkness.

"Luigi... You can't escape... Not this time
