The loud bang of the ball hitting someone echoed out in the gym, followed by the cheer of the entire student body present. They cheered my name, or what's left of it anyways. My only memory of anyone resembling a parental figure was them calling me "G" something. So, that was what I went by, until people started calling me Genso. Well, it sounded cool, and quite accurate if what I see of a video of me pying dodgeball was anything to go by.
Leaving behind the heavy thoughts, I went up and shook my opponent's hand. Maria, an exchange student from the States, apparently felt challenged by my dodgeball prowess, somehow, and challenged me on a 1v1. I mean I'm not even that good at anything else, except English. I love listening to this one guy reading stories on the internet, and another reading memes. They brightened my days.
"You're good, Genso-san." I had always felt quite stuffy using honorifics, but had to anyways. Japan society is very uptight.
"Thank you, Maria...san." I could circumvent this by speaking English, and I did, but then I remembered Sato, the nguage nerd of our css, was watching. And the coach would reprimand me anyways if he didn't hear a "san" after her name. "You are very good yourself."
"Wait... You aren't even sweating!" I was. There's this one droplet on my forehead, but pointing it out would be extremely rude, so I just smiled softly.
Unfortunately, her turn was over, but not mine. I pushed her to the side before Shinji, my self-procimed rival, could reach the ball. Her confused and betrayed gaze fell on me. Gah! Don't look at me like that! Now I feel guilty! Thankfully that look melted away when Shinji's voice boomed out.
"ATTACK!" Everyone present save for Maria threw a ball at me, even the coach, he knew I could handle it. The hail of balls reached my position, and I probably look like Neo from The Matrix or something. I must admit, the feeling of wind rustling my clothes and prickling my skin as they barely missed me was euphoric. I knew I was grinning like an idiot.
Suddenly, I felt my foot tripping on what seemed to be an indent in the floor, sending me into a tumble. I smmed my other foot in front of me, then realized that it was where a ball was approaching. In a panic, I pushed, and accidentally flexed the mental muscle to activate that. I sailed through the air, way too high for a normal human, flipping upside down in the process. My hands found two solid things to grab, and I held on for dear life, because, you know, panic. As I continued my flip, I felt a ball missing my back and saw another two flew by in front of my face. I hastily unflexed the "floating" muscle and found myself gripped by gravity again. I finished the flip, twisting my body a bit to avoid a ball from hitting my chest, nded, and at the same time, threw the balls I grabbed. Two meaty "thwack" sounded out, one after the other, and the hail of projectile stopped.
Silence.
I looked up and saw two people holding their heads, rubbing and groaning.
"Uh... sorry, I... tripped." And they cheered. Even the coach.
The css began devolving into discussion about my "supernatural ability in dodgeball", which nearly made my heart pop since I thought they figured out my secret. Thankfully, no one noticed anything, chalking it up to my "impressive leg strength". Although, Maria kept staring at me intensely the entire time.
Eventually, css ended, and luckily for everyone, PE was the final css of the day. As I was taking my stuffs out of the locker, I noticed something strange. It was quiet, too quiet. I could even hear air scraping against my nostril.
"Genso-san." Maria's voice startled me. Turning back to look at her, I saw her not in the school uniform, but a slightly frilly dark purple dress and a weirdly shaped hat with a ribbon-shaped pin over her left ear. "You did something back there, didn't you?" Her question immediately put me on guard.
"What do you mean?"
"Your flip during PE. I could feel it, common sense being warped." At this point, I was panicking, my breath hitches, and a lump of charcoal ignited in my throat. Suddenly I could feel every piece of clothes I was wearing, clinging to my body where it was particurly sweaty,I could feel a single overstrained strand of hair, painfully pulled at by the rest of my ponytail. I felt faint, and probably bcked out at some point because I heard a loud crashing noise before I was leaning against the lockers with new found pain on my head.
"Oh crap! I- Genso-san! I'm sorry! I didn't meant to..." Her words were tinged with worry as she rushed to my side, the rest of the world blurred, the burning sensation spreaded, along with a sickeningly sour taste. Tears escaped my eyes as the burning went away, repced by a chilling relief. I cried into her arms.
I don't know how long I was out, but when I woke, the sun had already set, repced by the gentle night of the full moon. I sat up straight, froze a little when I realized I had been resting on her shoulder, then again when I realized she was looking at me.
"Sorry for that." I flinched when she spoke, earning an apologetic wince. "I was too excited to see another with special ability." I kept quiet, but nodded.
"I've been lonely for so long, I hurt me seeing you react like that."
"Sorry..."
"Don't be. I think we're quite simir in a way."
"How so?"
"Trapped."
"Oh..."
Suddenly, we heard a rustle behind the corner, a yelp, then a girl fell on her face into the hallway.
"Usami-san?" She was someone I recognized, the css loner and proud self-aware chuunibyou.
"Ah! I-I'm sorry for eavesdropping!" She stammered out as she pushed herself up.
"How much did you hear?" Maria narrowed her eyes threateningly.
"Um..." I could see her blush in the moonlight. "F-From the part where you- where you said you have been l-lonely."
"Oh. Okay." The blond girl stopped squinting.
I thought back at our conversation, finally realizing how vague everything from that point on was. "Wait." Extremely. "W-Wait it's no- mph!" My vision was suddenly filled with yellow. She was kissing me!?!!
When our lips parted, she moved near my ear and whispered
"Better than telling her about the other thing." We separated and looked at Usami, Maria with a "why are you still here" look, and I with great sheepishness.
"Um... g-good for you two! Um..." She stood up, picked up her bag and ran away.
And us two, we just sat there in awkward silence.
"I guess... see you tomorrow?" Finally, Maria spoke up.
"Uh, yeah, see you tomorrow. and drop the san, please. It makes me feel like I might suffocate."
"Sure, Genso-chan." My heart rate spiked.
Do I really like her that way?
